An obstetrician-gynecologist aiming to address social inequities. MSc Human Factors & Systems Safety, Lund Univ. Currently in the DrPH program, Univ of Toronto
Surgeon (end of consult) Sorry I wasn’t wearing a 😷 when you came in, I find them really hard to wear, 365 … I’m pregnant (very early - flat stomach).
Us: Oh congratulations!
Hubs:Oh you should try the
@flo_mask
(indicating to his face)..I don’t feel the need to take it off⬇️
@ConsumerSOS
It’s hard enough just being a frontline healthcare provider. Patients not masking. Colleagues not masking. In fact, I’ve been pressured to drop masking.
But we need to continue fighting the good fight. Masking. And trying to convince others to put their masks back on.
@CTVVancouver
Thanks for potentially making those who mask even more stigmatized.
It’s insulting for me who is both a physician working with vulnerable patients and a patient, to be lumped in with those with criminal intent
@Limbictweets
@TheSheepcat
@LGSentinel
@DrZedZha
I’m going to suggest an open ended question here, as opposed to a close ended one. And I weigh in with over a decade of working with patients with trauma histories.
Maybe: what supports do you think you will have at home after your surgery?
@AndrewCicchett1
@DrEmmaKatz
@MoreauGabarain
@wecarryon2
@AirCanada
This was on board. It’s not stocked like an ER. And the doctor is a humanitarian. He put himself & his family at risk b/c of his professional ethical values. If the sick passenger had ethical values, he shouldn’t have boarded. And Air Canada should still have masking mandates
@WilliamsKona
Thank you for sharing. My heart broke when I read your thread. (I am a gynecologist who has a clinic in an Indigenous health centre.) Please consider submitting to the CMAJ or other journal. To bring awareness to other HC providers the realities of being Indigenous.
@jonathanstea
@HislopMD
Please add Shingrix to your list. I just got the second one on Friday. I mounted quite a response! (At least, I said to myself, it seems to be working)
@drquinngyn
Well…we really don’t want him in our specialty do we?
And frankly, I think the psychiatrists were so nice as they treated him like a patient.
@SharkawyMD
@crwequine
@DFisman
@IshatReza
Reinstating mask mandates is far overdue. It is shameful that leadership at all levels are not being honest about the COVID rates in the community and the strain being placed on hospitals.
@MLS_Dave
I rarely take selfies. This is me at the gym, post workout. I’d be wearing the same N95, if you saw me in clinic or when I teach. Or at the grocery store.
You two rock!
@i_petersen
@Embyeye
@GeorgeMonbiot
Wow. You’re definitely not promoting public health and informatics.
How about: “hey, it’s great that you’re continuing to mask and are up to date with your vaccinations”?
@drdagly
I feel like I’m a broken record: privatization won’t improve access or quality of care. It’s just going to cost more. And those costs are shouldered by tax payers
@frozen
I would respectfully disagree with Dr. Gustafson. I think one of biggest threats to our healthcare system are medical officers of health who spread misinformation, falsely inform the public that COVID is not a threat & shame us into abandoning safe practices like masking
@DFisman
@Yash25571056
How about encouraging people to start wearing masks again? Mask wearing is socially acceptable in Japan (and other Asian countries) so I can’t understand the pressure to lift masking recommendations there
@lovewins11011
Leave as soon as you can. Give yourself permission to uncouple yourself from your parent(s). Give yourself permission to jettison what isn’t healthy. Give yourself permission to never go back.
@amykaufman84
In Canada, a woman is killed by an intimate partner every 6 days. Almost 1/3 of women worldwide have been physically/sexually abused by a "partner". Yet, HC providers underestimate the frequency of IPV. In a study, Canadian ortho surgeons estimated the prevalence of IPV as <1%
@amandalhu
@AirCanada
WOW. I flew Air Canada, returning from Frankfurt to Montreal and had a Philip's GoPure air purifier on board and running for the entire flight. (It's very discreet, shaped like a travel mug.) I guess I won't be flying AC any more.
@AndieYEG
“Alberta Health Services appointed head & neck surgeon Dr. Daniel O’Connell to a senior administrative position…AHS knew 5 of the surgeon’s Edmonton colleagues had accused him of using his position to benefit a private clinic, of which he is part owner.”
@drdagly
@kasza_leslie
@BrennanSurgeon
Peter, how many of your female colleagues would be shocked by this?
None. Because we’ve been in the receiving end of this since med school.
The only people who are shocked are the decent men.
@FinchTH
Well…I walk my talk and wear an N95 in clinic…when I teach…when I go grocery shopping…when I go to gym…even when I am presenting at a national conference
@DebHolloway
I’m so not surprised. I had a bout of mycoplasma as a med student and I believe that it predisposed me to…another 4 bouts of mycoplasma over the following 6 years. So I completely believe that COVID would similarly make people susceptible to mycoplasma
@EruditeElf
I talk about the plans for after the delivery…which include breast/bottle feeding, supports AND plans for contraception. Starting the conversation about birth control in the latter part of pregnancy allows the patient the opportunity to reflect on their choices & ask questions
@ironbow
I know you don’t share these stories to be thanked. You share them to make us aware of how colonialism and racism have impacted Indigenous peoples.
But I want to say thank you, Debbie.
Terrible messaging by Dr. Moore. He has effectively discouraged people from getting a fourth dose now even though many had their last dose at the end of 2021. Could be Nov. before a new vaccine formulation is available, which means it could be almost 11 months between doses!!!
@drdagly
@slav_metalurges
Never, never, never. I NEVER want to see privatized healthcare in Canada.
It's bad enough already w/ privatization of LTC.
Privatization will simply poach from the pubic side, costing us more in the end.
I will quit medicine the day ICU is privatized.
@DrVivianS
@kasza_leslie
@MaryFernando_
@PeterHotez
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. People who, in Dr. Hotez’ position would have made billions, don’t understand him and are resentful and jealous. And go after him.
@drdagly
I’m sorry about your week. I imagined that your relative silence was b/c you were biking in the wilderness.
The irony is that we are doctors. Only doctors.
We need policymakers in housing and education in three levels of government, to do their jobs. So that we can do ours.
@DrZedZha
And the expectation of volunteer work is 1) gendered (who organizes birthday cakes at the office?) & 2) often racialized (oh, can’t you give the EDI presentation?)
And yet women & members of faculty from equity deserving groups are less often thought of for leadership positions
I’m just a gynecologist. I know a bit of medico-legal matters because I need to and I should as a physician. I am wondering if this level of coercion can be considered a human rights violation?
@GeoffyPJohnston
@Billius27
@kristatee
My heart is breaking for this patient. How can she go back to work on the same unit?
I completely understand the dark humour we have in healthcare as we deal with situations that are heartbreaking & heartbreakingly hard, that is our story & I would never share it so cavalierly
@DrZedZha
Wontons are adorable and delicious. Chaos is neither. But a great example of: 1) do your homework; and 2) what happens when you appropriate another culture without consultation
@matpVI
@SrsAdvocateBC
What an impossible situation. I don’t understand why basic precautions can’t be reinstated, especially given how hard LTCs were hit in the early phase of COVID. Your wife must be frustrated and wary that she’s at risk.
@YoniFreedhoff
Ugh. A medical conference should not be a superspreader event.
Me, at the recent I-CAM conference in Quebec City.
I did unmask to eat and drink. And I’ve been vaccinated x 6.
@ScholerinED
I'm glad you're continuing to wear an N95 when seeing patients. I, am, too. But I find it sad that we're getting THANKED for masking! I think masking should be the default position. And It's rough when there are colleagues spouting misinformation. We are NOT POST-pandemic.
@keetmuise
I wear an N95 because we’re still in the middle of a pandemic. And just in case someone thinks wearing a N95 holds me back, I can assure them it does not
@quality_nguyen
And…being accused of being hysterical (you know, because I own a uterus) & being offered hygiene products because it must be a certain time of the month because I’m being extra emotional. All of which is tongue-in-cheek. I’m sorry you’ve been on the receiving end of abuse.
@DrSuneelDhand
Disagree on all counts. I find my professional life meaningful when I can help a patient, teach a student, collaborate with a colleague. While wearing an N95, if I’m doing any of these in person. I also think it’s not professional to be insulting people.
@dereknason
Hi, I’m Amy. I’m attending the I-CAM conference in Quebec City and doing my best to keep friends and strangers safe. And to do my best to ensure that I’m bringing only good memories home to Ottawa. (I thought balloons were fun…)
@jonathanstea
And having had a couple of these people in my personal life, it amazes me how they can shovel out “their opinion” in gallons and expect somehow that you should accept their feedback, but will cry when you give them a teaspoon.
@LauraMiers
@DrMarjorieRobe1
@RedCross
Yes! It seems oxymoronic to NOT have masking in place for people who are civic minded and donating their TIME and blood for others' benefit.
@RedCross
should be trying their best to keep these volunteers safe.
@ElleSteinhagen
Because my husband works at a children’s hospital. Because I see patients who are medically fragile (I would kill them if I gave them COVID). Because I don’t want to get COVID and give it to another person, whether loved one or stranger.
@Yash25571056
I’m sorry to hear that your colleague contracted COVID and passed.
It’s a tragedy, to lose people because our governments haven’t continued with effective public health measures against airborne pathogens.
@DrDoyleSays
Scary—trauma recovery is a complete 180 from day-to-day survival in an abusive chaotic environment. It takes huge courage to choose recovery. Kudos to everyone who does.
@Kidsdoc1Rick
To parents with a sick child: keep your kids home.
To employers: please excuse your employees when they are sick or looking after sick kids at home.
To the government: how about ensuring some sick leave policy?
It’s odd…I read the announcement and thought immediately that it was the wrong thing to do, drop masking at Canadian Blood Services. They better start listening to their donors. What are they going to do with a shortage of O neg? Donors please call and express your concerns
Blood donors,
If you can no longer give blood in an environment that does not require masks, email or call
@CanadasLifeline
to tell them.
They are listening.

“This cohort study of 18 355 infants delivered after February 2020 found that male but not female offspring born to mothers w/ a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test result during pregnancy were more likely to receive a neurodevelopmental diagnosis in the first 12 months after delivery”

I don’t understand how an oncologist can be so dismissive of COVID. Glad you’re not one of his patients! But feeling hopeless for those who are.
@yeet_the_ute
@BassoonYsu
Thanks for commenting, otherwise I wouldn't have seen the original post, which suggests that obstetrical ultrasounds are unnecessary & somehow invading a pregnancy's privacy (?).
Placenta previa & placent accreta are life threatening conditions for mom: they're diagnosed by u/s
@canmorefolk
I hope if any suppliers drop out because of your support and allyship of the Pride event, I hope local businesses will step up and pitch in to make your event the success it deserves to be
@nilikm
Wow. There is no need for rudeness!
@Twitter
I’m sorry
@nilikm
that you’re on the receiving end of so much disrespect. And, yes, I wear a mask at work, when I teach, when I work out and when I go grocery shopping.
In short, I wear a N95 when I will be with other people
@jonathanstea
Jonathan, thanks for sharing. And I want to just remind us of the effects of vicarious trauma upon healthcare providers who work with trauma survivors. These stories are so heavy, please take good care of yourselves. An empty vessel cannot pour
Maggie, Canadians doctors got a notice that the situation is complicated. In short, a Canadian doctor performing an abortion IN CANADA on a patient from a US state which bans abortion may get arrested if they enter the US. This is how the US Supreme Court is tying our arms.
@kasza_leslie
@healingfromlc
This gynecologist wears an N95 and has a portable air purifier in the consulting room. I thank my patients for wearing a mask.
@drdagly
How about we start with being tough on poverty? And ensure that people live with dignity?? So that they live in safe homes with food on the table? That they can access healthcare easily? Where they can access transportation??
@MoreauGabarain
@wecarryon2
@AirCanada
I would not be asking other passengers to “donate” their medications for this person. That’s not fair to others, and there is no lab on board. What equipment on board is minimal compared to an ER. I know because my daughter is a flight attendant.
@ESL_fairy
I want to say that while her heart and yours are breaking, you are giving her a tremendous gift. You allow her to feel hard, painful feelings; you don't insist that she swallow them b/c they make you, the parent feel uncomfortable. It is an unimaginable, immeasurable gift.
@ahmedhankir
@writershealth
Yes, and as physicians we need to recognize that our patients may not be able to follow our advice because they: are housing insecure, food insecure, have few supports, have had adverse childhood experiences, have difficulties in accessing other services.
The proposal to privatize healthcare in Canada is like a proposal to jump off the observation platform of the CN tower or over Niagara Falls. I don’t need to try either to know that it’s a bad idea with poor outcomes.

If you’re unhappy with,
- health system fragmentation,
- lack of integrated end-2-end care
- policy decisions that minimize costs above all else
you will REALLY dislike private healthcare.
In public systems these are parts of cycles. In private healthcare these are features.
@WriteNThrive
Your love is visible, palpable. And your love is a welcome gift now and as she undergoes her transition.
Sending my very best to you both

If an event organizer is serious about being COVID careful, they insist on masking, have a refund policy for those who are sick & can’t attend, offer masks & RAT, have a designated person to be the contact person for cases of illness, have a contingency plan for speakers.
Thank you, Virpi, for an eye opening thread summarizing Sweden’s COVID response. Absolutely unacceptable that a handful of people with a lot of power made very bad decisions. They couldn’t admit they were wrong and continued with their policies. They should be held accountable
In spring 2020, when other countries closed all schools, Sweden kept primary schools open, with mandatory in-person attendance and without protective measures such as testing or quarantines.
Sweden then told the world COVID didn't spread in schools. It wasn't true. 🧵

"In July, The Associated Press reported on the case of an Inuit woman in Yellowknife who had surgery in 2019 aimed at relieving her abdominal pain. Dr. Andrew Kotaska, did not have the woman’s consent to sterilize her, and he did so over the objections of other medical personnel"

My daughter is an FA. Trust me, Good Samaritan “rules” aren’t ironclad. And talking about what an FA or a happen-to-be-onboard HCW can do or not do shifts the attention away from the real issue: don’t board the plane if you’re sick—you’re putting other passengers & staff at risk
@DefectiveBecca
@DontInhaleVirus
City of Hope in Duarte, California, has maintained masking requirements, and this has prevented hospital-acquired COVID-19 there entirely, according to Vijay Trisal, chief medical officer.
“Our policies enabled us to achieve zero nosocomial infections, zero outbreaks.”
