In my first acquisition for
@ScribnerUK
I am thrilled to publish Dominic Amerena’s brilliant debut I Want Everything (‘a great contemporary novel’ says
@laurenoyler
!)
The tense, clever metafictional literary puzzle novel of my dreams. I can’t wait to solve the mystery of Brenda
this take is funny considering that the writing he’s dismissing includes one of the most interesting short stories I’ve read — about basque independence, imperialism & torture. amongst many other considered & skilled pieces. but I guess a pink background cancels that out.
If one thing ties the NYC Trust Fund Kid Literary World together, it’s a commitment to the formula “character = trauma + consumption habits.” It’s an incredibly bleak view of human life, and one that could only be invented by people who have never actually thought about anything.
only contribution to the discourse today is that I think wonderful things happen in a woman's life when she realises that youth and beauty are not her only values

KILLED this piece for
@softpunkmag
on contemporary "cute" feminism, and what's so off-putting about The Wing and other infantilising "feminist" initiatives and attitudes. Do yourself a favour & devour it:
BLUE RUIN was one of the first books that
@ScribnerUK
acquired last year, and one I can't stop thinking about. A glorious, heady look at art, class, ambition and love.
Out in May -- with cover art I also can't stop thinking about.
logically I know there must be a better coping mechanism than ritualistically watching the entire twilight saga every fourteen months. however. I have yet to find it.
hark an angel is born! a pleasure to copyedit the first issue of
@angelfoodmag

has already been an invaluable source of support, and I can't wait to get stuck into the program this year 🎉
pretty much every morning, my mother sends me her sunsets from the other side of the world, reminding me 24/7 that I was an idiot to ever leave western australia
"If I liked I Love Dick for making me believe that my tendency towards romantic obsession could be explained... Ernaux allowed me to believe I had no need to explain myself at all."

I had a marvellous time copyediting Buffalo 19, MOTHER, which is as fabulous, complex and emotional as you might expect. Convo with
@reproutopia
, Asa Seresin &
@weakanalogy
is one I still talk and think about <3
Buffalo Zine # 19 features many things besides the fab conversation between me, Asa Seresin &
@weakanalogy
; including another conversation mediated by
@lolaolufemi_
, between
@alexispauline
and Alexis De Veaux, art by Carmen Winant, & many other good things
exceeeptionally late to the party but delighted to receive my copy of
@AusPoetry
v9! lovely to be surrounded by excellent poets in an issue dedicated to western australian authors ♥️ a small slice of home in dreary London 🌊
Congratulations to Alexis Wright, who has been shortlisted for Australia's Stella Prize for Praiseworthy!
The judges called it a: ‘A canon-crushing Australian novel for the ages ... a genre-defiant epic of climate catastrophe proportions.’ 💫
coetzee‘s birthday the other day so happy bday to the man that wrote “pain is truth; all else is subject to doubt” and “I am not the we in anyone” and “desire is rapture, not exchange,” and “to the last we will have learned nothing”
I loved being able to publish this illustrated essay by
@DivyaGhelani
and
@RowanHLB
in
@WasafiriMag
beautifully written and drawn, and a testament to representation and community.
Quokkas have pulled the biggest PR spin of the century. Anyone from Western Australia will know that these furry demons are just oversized rats, ready to bite your toes and shit in your tent before going to pose for a selfie with a German tourist. Creatures of evil.
I am delighted to have Chloe Wilson’s strange, hypnotising stories on the
@ScribnerUK
list — something so beguiling & intense about them… & we have proofs to spare…
I think part of what makes
@WasafiriMag
special are pieces like this one –– immersive and emotional, able to combine personal experience and broader political circumstances in a way that feels so natural and accessible. Thank you

In the latest of our Global Dispatches series,
@swatiarora_
responds to
@ca_davids
with a piece that examines the communal language of protest, and watching your home burn from afar. 'Their songs of revolution flew far and wide...'
'This sense of secrets within secrets, of nested realities telescoping into one another, each transparency giving onto a fresh opacity, is intensely mystical—in fact, it very nearly models a cabbalistic conception of ultimate truth.'
perfect Murnane reading by

Delighted to welcome the brilliant
@nellstevens

I think the discussion of privilege is important but also shouldn’t be used to dismiss work by writers who are not a monolith (and who certainly are not all of the same class background). I also don’t think “people who have never thought about anything” is a good critique.
Fantastic short story by
@gaachburi
that really speaks to how lonely the digital age can be, and the way we consume other people. ' Tell me, is love really ineffable? Or do I just want it to be?' oof.
Now up: Fuck Marry Kill by
@gaachburi
, shortlisted for the 2021 Queen Mary Wasafiri New Writing Prize. 'What kind of great love just gets tired? Isn’t that something that only happens in movies and bad poetry?'

I second Alexis Wright as one of the most important Australian authors of all time, but also thinking about Christina Stead, Elizabeth Jolley (I think she counts as Australian??), even Winton.
just over the moon about Damon Galgut’s inclusion in the
@TheBookerPrizes
longlist! The Promise is dizzyingly, dizzyingly good. Here’s my interview with him for
@softpunkmag
!
Extremely late, but a while ago I wrote about PAUL for
@TheAtlantic
, and the way that we see things in books and in life. A 2022 release that has remained with me:
every woman's dream is to have a book cover that is adam and eve but the girl is anime and that's why this is mine. PARADISE LOGIC is out March of next year with
@SimonBooks
and you can pre order it literally rn
working on Paul Yoon's THE HIVE AND THE HONEY at
@scribneruk
has been magical. one of my favourite short story collections of all time -- haunting, elegant & always surprising. so glad he won🥺
looking forward to evangelicalism becoming as trendy with e-girls as catholicism so I can finally get some clout for my grandmother speaking in tongues
I had the pleasure of not only reading Damon Galgut’s astounding new novel The Promise (
@ChattoBooks
@PenguinUKBooks
), but chatting to him about it too. Turns out not only is he a revelatory writer, but a very lovely man to boot!
