My book, Feminism Interrupted; Disrupting Power is out today !!! so many of the principles I talk about in in it are being put to the test across the world as we watch a pandemic unfold, recognise our differing vulnerabilities & reckon with the states callous indifference.
the end result of a logic that sees sex as fixed & immovable. (So immovable in fact, that it needs to be regulated). There is a reason radical black feminist movements have always rejected this idea, we know who & what you mean when you say “woman”
🥺🥺 She’ll continue to escape accountability for complicity in the torture and murder of climate organisers in Ogoniland & keep poisoning indigenous land 🥺🥺
we live in a ghoulish political culture that requires the death of children to be weaponised in order for Palestinians to reach a threshold of innocence that makes their lives worthy of defense.
The thing about a strike that upsets a specific kind of English sensibility is that people want others to be miserable and endure hardship quietly. Very simply - a strike makes the worker’s misery everyone’s problem. As it should be.
I’m interested in how it took no less than a decade for an entire generation of academics & writers to be convinced that everyone born after 1990(?) hates being challenged, critical dialogue & is obsessed with public cancellation. This serves state interests more than anything.
the most enduring lesson of radical struggle is that you do not reason with state forces & their accomplices if they want you dead. No amount of rhetorical flair or pleas for “nuance” can undo the power asymmetry between a settler colonial state & the population it oppresses.
Students who don’t support strikes are so bizarre to me, if this is how the university treats precarious staff... how do you think it’s going to treat you
This has everything to do with the way TERFs have mobilised & taken hold of the public conversation about what gender is and how it works. That violent way of thinking has seeped everywhere
Caster Semenya, a 2-time Olympic champion in the 800 meters, will now be forced to medicate to suppress her testosterone levels if she wants to defend her world title in September in Qatar.
this IWD and always, I’m thinking about what it means to protect & defend a radical tradition from the ghouls that mobilise feminism in the name of war, settler occupation, policing, prisons, & bordering.
the sun is out & I got full funding for a PhD with CREAM & the Stuart Hall Foundation on the uses of the imagination in the cultural production of revolutionary movements in the UK !
I think “the left” would gain so much if we added “annoying” to the right/wrong binary. sometimes people aren’t even explicitly right or wrong... they’re just annoying and that’s ok ❤️
If we’re serious about abolition we also have to be honest about the failings of anti-rape movements, the lies sold to a generation of feminists about constitutes safety & the deep reliance that a lot of liberal feminist orgs have on the police & prisons.
No inquiry, no review, no report, no new training, firing or hiring practices will undo the institutional culture that enabled police officers to take selfies with the dead bodies of two black women and then share them. It’s an insult to their memory to suggest otherwise.
Straight women holding back their thinly veiled disdain for queerness long enough to feign ~~solidarity~~ & use lesbians as a rhetorical crutch against trans life is one of the most disgusting tactics of the “gender crit” crowd.
everyday a fresh police hell video on this website & some of you are still labouring under the illusion that the “chaos” of a world without police and prisons would somehow be worse than what we have now.
“Cancel culture” is like “identity politics” in that people say these words and mean at least 5 different thing. ID pol is somehow the materialist politics of late 70/80s but also shorthand for neoliberalism, also a general synonym for “that thing X group does that I don’t like”
thinking of all of us who have already been inside for 10/12 days & how 3 weeks will be bearable for some & unbearable for others. Increased police powers is *terrifying*, anyone who feels comforted by it should reflect on how restriction for them is everyday life for others.
liberals don’t want you to complicate their otherwise simple & triumphant narratives because it would require them to question their political commitments + reckon w the fact that their political framework has no answer to the violence facilitated by state, nation & border
thinking about the Essex 39 today and how criminal convictions & media focus on the individual evil/greed of people smugglers will once again obscure what is at the heart of it all: the border, the border, the border.
waking up to hear Diane di Prima is gone. ah, I always keep revolutionary letters open on my laptop. I love those poems because you can feel how much she believes what she wrote. “remember you can have what you ask for, ask for everything.”
chilling to remember how hard the state came down on those involved: something like 3,000 people arrested, combined sentences of those jailed totalling 100 years... people sentenced to 4 years for writing incidenary facebook posts
hard to wrap your head around half a million people on strike today, that’s a truly beautiful thing ! - part of acknowledging that enables you to resist this country’s unique ability to minimize workers struggle.
This insistence on defining the traits of ‘this generation’ as anti-intellectual, purist etc etc flattens the landscape of dialogue & exchange in the age of the internet. It acts as a cover for established thinkers who say they want dialogue and mean deference.
I’ve withdrawn from
@womenslib_50
conference tomorrow over their clear links with Women’s Place UK. TERF links cut across universities, women’s services + public institutions. They have no place in my vision or understanding of the political possibilities that feminism offers us.
If 39 people dying entirely avoidable deaths in absolutely miserable conditions is not enough to wake you up to the violence of borders and a call for you reject any alliegance to nations & the machinery that sustains them, what will?
keep thinking of healthcare workers who are dealing with the brunt of this crisis in ways that could scar them for life who can’t even point out that one of the reasons the NHS is on the brink is a decade of austerity. Or else they lose their badges as non-partisan heroes
something deeply unsettling about the response to people *clinging to moving aircrafts* in order to escape stopping at “asylum for those who need it most!” & other hierarchies based on deservingness. The border should not exist. That’s not a pipe dream.
I wrote a book about how feminism is a transformative political project that requires us to seriously reassess how we live & why it’s so important that we claw it back from neoliberalism(!) It’s out March 20th next year and u can preorder it now ✨
lmao someone reviewed my book for the Financial Times and said “my deeper concern with this version of feminism is its embrace of chaos and disruption as essential forces for radical change” fhjdjdkfrm .
My book, Experiments in Imagining Otherwise, published by
@hajarpress
is out today. This is a book about the political promise of revolution & horizons, one that the proposes that there is a meaningful relationship between our capacity to imagine and the impetus to resist.
yes absolutely normal to intercut a Muslim woman with footage of the twin towers falling, not a death sentence in this current climate at all

Round 2 in feeble and inadequate apologies. The important thing is that the work continues despite blatant intellectual dishonesty & that we keep interrogating our faculties, pushing them in more progressive directions re: knowledge production, curricula and faculty cultures.
So many of these spaces (academia, publishing) thrive on hierarchy - somethng about the internet providing greater access to texts, thoughts, ideas & spaces to comment on them unsettles the establishment in these institutions. When status is threatened, they start the lament
this terrible year my book ‘Feminism Interrupted’ came out & so many of you bought it & were kind + generous about it, thank you 🖤 / !! I am told it is being published in Italian & Indonesian, I hope it has many lives & remains useful
Popular fiction is so devoid of political integrity that people are surprised when an author makes clear their political commitments or has an opinion that is not just “literature can unite the world 🌎🌈❤️”
I’ve lived in north London my whole life & seen Tottenham Hale essentially demolished & rebuilt for city workers who would never spend an actual weekend there whilst community projects are served eviction notices with no warning, consultation or secure alternatives.
Solidarity with all those taking part in the
#UCUstrike
🌹 ! Regardless of whether or not demands are won, something is changed in the *doing* - in the relationships forged on the picket, at the teach out. That’s where I received the best education.
I hate it when in the face of political upheaval/unrest rich writers say “all I could do was write/offer my writing 😔” stop telling lies!!! that’s not all u could do lmao
worst piece of feedback/criticism you’ve ever received? sometimes I’ll just randomly remember that a supervisor once wrote “lola, this is not a paragraph... this is a collection of random sentences” on my essay 🤪
Just handed in the first draft of a book about feminism for young people, out next year! It’s an attempt to remake the argument that feminism is a radical tool that can help us think about the limits of this world & the possibilities contained in the one we could craft together.
hoping this does not mean money funneled back into transphobic “women’s causes” that prop up carceral solutions to gendered violence, knowing it probably does 🥴
Update: We are sorry to confirm that our Clapham vigil scheduled for tonight is cancelled. Please see the full statement here.
Instead, we are fundraising £320,000 for women's causes: £10K for every proposed fine for the 32 vigils originally scheduled.
only an unwavering demand for the abolition of the police can ensure that what happened to Child Q never happens to another child again. That means (beyond providing material support for their recovery) redirecting energy to opposing all expansion of police power everywhere.
What’s lost is our ability to understand that knowledge needn’t be generationally bound. Any way of knowing worth defending is shared and social - we all have something to learn from each other, obviously.
@WeAreHomegrown
a community-run kitchen, saturday school & social space for young children & their families in Tottenham Hale were evicted by
@NHGhousing
on 29/08.
Rose & Emma have since occupied the space & HG is demanding a permanent, accessible location in Tottenham Hale.
Interested in examples of organised/ formalised (not formal) ways women and/or feminists keep each other safe: less confronting perpetrators directly & more making sure people know where to go/ what to do if they feel unsafe, refuge, non-paternal actions of solidarity 4 safety
"The Army is, and always will be, a totally apolitical organisation. This is a serious error of judgement"
16 Air Assault Brigade Commander Nick Perry on Jeremy Corbyn 'target practice' video
Countless podcasts, articles, transphobic blog posts 🤡 that insist they have a firm and unshakeable understanding of how young people think and operate. The virtues this generation has lost. By that they mean they engage w students in elite spaces v likely to parrot their idols.
You don’t get to preside over a violent regime of cuts, deportation, prison expansion & fortress Europe and then cry... at the end ! 🙃 If May’s tears move you, think instead of the people we allowed to drown in the Mediterranean, or the queer migrants deported to their death.
I wrote for the g*ardian about abolition, the black feminist tradition & the series I co-programmed with
@sarah_shin_
&
@autotheoryqueen
that starts in 10 mins!
Remember that talk of dialogues & police reform are distractions. The task is clear - focus on the people doing the work, boost & amplify that, add your skills & resources, offer your time !
Makes sense 2 fan the flames of the culture war via generational divide so that we talk less abt strategy (what worked, what didn’t, how might we adapt?) and become steadfast in our individualised ideological positions - austerity has also killed the possibility 4 us to gather
the gap between what we know is happening & how this pandemic is being narrativised continues to widen. all with the aim of encouraging us to forget how many people this government has abandoned & left to die.
✨proofs of my book are now available (!!!) if you want to review it or chat to me about it for your magazine/podcast/radio show, email publicity

the hard distinctions between “good” & “bad” actions during a riot or between “spontaneous” & “politically motivated” rioters only serve to justify it to a white imaginary - the more pressing job for those not involved is to try not to discipline it, even with words
We're building 4 new prisons to:
⚖️ Improve rehabilitation
📈 Help local economies
🏗️ Support construction industry to invest & innovate
Part of our £2.5bn plan to create 10k additional prison places. Delivering modern prisons & keeping the public safe.
again: wear a mask & hat if you’re attending any demo/rally. Make yourself as indistinguishable as possible. ESP tell family members who are new to demos/protest. The Met police are intelligence gathering on a massive scale & asking random members of the public to snitch.
I live in fear of those people who say “if you skipped your daily pret coffee you could save X amount of money a week!” etc etc, this world is so bleak AND we have to scrimp and save every last penny?
The historical feminist refusal to concede that abortion is unlawful, the doing it anyway & helping the next person who needs one reminds us that we have never just been passive in the face of states that want us dead, we’ve built infrastructures of care to survive
necessary for those of us who “succeeded” (code: got into oxbridge) from underresourced state schools who were fed lies about intelligence to see how the algorithm quickly unravels this idea, it’s always pure dumb luck / a luck that depends on the idea of ~good~ and ~bad~ unis
So disappointing that
@ukblackpride
have given a stall to the Home Office, enablers of the violent, dehumanising & hostile policy that deports queer black and brown asylum seekers to their death or forces on them the most stringent and bizarre threasholds to ‘prove’ queerness.
this & every IWD, I’m thinking about how the social reproductionists are right, about workers demands, abt how our political commitments must eschew the border, not mistaking the map for the territory and how feminism as a critical method *gave* me something I still believe in.
“When police raid brothels in the name of anti-trafficking, it is often migrant sex workers who are arrested. In the UK, when victims of trafficking are ‘rescued’ by police, they can face arrest, detainment as criminals, and forcible deportation -often back to the same situation”
