Coaches, if you could build a youth hockey program from scratch today, how would you do it? How would you structure it (ie. practices/free play/games/off-ice) and what would the pillars of your program (ie. culture, coaching methods, etc)?

60% of 1st round draft picks DO NOT make it to the NHL. If pro teams can't predict which players will be NHL caliber at 18, how can we predict who will make it when they are 8, 10 or 12? The answer: we can't. So the goal should be to keep as many playing for as long as possible.

How does Warroad, a town of 1,800, produce so many hockey players? The sign on the rink says it all "Come early. Stay late. Skate every day." 1) Tons of free play at a rink that is almost always open and free for the kids to skate. And tons of outdoor skating options too.

I’ve seen some good transfer to games using high low games in practice. Also helps the D see some other options than the head down shot from the point. Now I just have to get everyone to stop screaming “shoot” everything they get the puck.

More on dominoes! In lacrosse the fast break, a classic 4v3 scenario, is the ideal example of dominoes theory. The middie breaks down the field alone. He forces the D to play him, makes the read & pass and the dominoes fall. This is well explained in "Transforming Basketball".

A common misconception with CLA is that it's just any small area game. 3v3 cross ice is not the same as 5v5 cross ice. The constraint is the time and space created by using less players. It's a subtle but important distinction. @USAHockeyCoach @TheCoachesSite @icehockeydrills

It's important to remember that the constraints-led approach isn't just another Game Based Approach (even though there are some similarities) It comes from ecological dynamics and encourages coaches to centre their learning designs around the individual-environment interaction.

Coach was fed up with his players not hitting the inside of the bag so he put their phones on the bag to force them to hit the inside of the base. This is genius 😂

Don’t pay for your kids to stand in line to skate around some cones. Go here instead. The only CLA based hockey clinic that I’m aware of in Metro Boston.

@JoelCressman Group of 40 players in town program. Players were not divided in to A and B team. They had virtually unlimited access to a year round bubble covered field. At 13, any player could choose to play for the team that practiced twice a week to the team that practiced more.

@FlutoShinzawa @FlutoShinzawa , if Rask is healthy and you believe in the kids, does that make Halak an asset worth listening to offers for? He’s an asset that doesn’t hurt the team’s future.

@JimHaverstrom Would love to get my kids playing like this. I’ve been trying to come up with some SSG’s that would allow for the affordance of switching. It will definitely be a part of going to interchangeable positions this year.

Sprinting activities for young athletes should come in the form of ball games, races, pattern running, relays, and chasing activities like tag and invasion games. Children love the competitive nature of these types of activities...

Someone recently said to me, "it's become so fashionable for adults to talk of play". Play is not a 'phase'. Play is not a tool in a coach's toolkit. Play is not adults talking to adults about their coaching. Play doesn't require BIG💰funding Play is about children's rights

@Abrew2014 @TheSIpod Eliminating selection would be extremely challenging in NA but it has been done in one place. @JOYofthePEOPLE is a soccer program in St Paul, Minnesota that did it and they are consistently winning futsal titles. Their model is also based on a solid foundation of deliberate play.

Highly creative pro footballers spend more time in free play from the ages of 6-15. “Players who can retain a sense of spontaneity, ‘mischievousness’, and creativity at the top level of their sport are more likely to shape a game than those who are ruthlessly well-drilled.”
