I’ll say it again…. AAA hockey should not start until at the earliest 11U if not 12U. The fact that there are 8U AAA teams being ran through AAU hockey is a joke. I don’t know how to stop it, because there’s no governing body that will, but the sport needs to do better.

It would be phenomenal if USA hockey went back and allowed Midgets to play under the same rules as HS hockey and allow icings on the PK and delayed off sides. I get the ideology, but it’s not working nor worth it.

@MikeMcKenna56 Mike, I did this for 4 years coaching 12U. Shirt, Tie, khakis and a belt. Kids loved it, helped with teaching discipline and respect for themselves and the org they played for. They could wear whatever goofy tie or even hat they wanted to. If they enjoy it why is it bad?

Wanna know the difference between a good and a great youth hockey coach? It’s not about the kids, or the wins, or the culture. It’s about being able to scan the outer edges of the rink as you walk around to your bench for forgotten pucks from previous practices and games.

I’m sure this will hurt me with certain powers at be in this state, but, fuck it. IL hockey does not need a Tier 1/AAA level for 9 year olds (they don’t even need it for 10 year olds). We continue to dilute the playing pool and charge an asinine price when these kids…

Skated with a new club today for the very first time, ever. Got tossed right into the fire and led the ‘12 and ‘11 birth year skates. Felt strange not knowing the kids on the ice, but that will happen after 10 years at one place. Looking forward to what the future holds.

I’m probably in the minority, and I truly think the next USA hockey rule changes will be eliminating checking till Midgets, but I think checking needs to go back in as a legal at the 12U level when players are relatively the same size and height. Needs to be coached properly too.

Can you really claim someone as an alumni in your league to the NCAA ranks if they played for one of your youth clubs & not junior clubs? Am I allowed to say I’ve coached a D1 NCAA skater, but at the Peewee level for a year & use that as clout? What about moving player to AAA?

@JeffVeillette I would love to know what Trouba is supposed to do differently? If he doesn’t play body, JT gets plowed over or deked around and Meier gets a scoring chance. He doesn’t explode and his elbow is tucked in. Body contact was inevitable.

I wrote a little blurb about what I as a scout am looking or in junior players. If you have someone interested in playing past midgets and HS, this might be a valuable read for them. If not, it’s got a ton of coaches favorite buzzwords so that’s cool.

So I’ve been strongly thinking about going old school and creating a message board for hockey coaches, instructors, directors, trainers, and even parents that allows ideas to flow, drills to be shared and questions to be answered. How many people would be interested in this?

Should be focusing on their skill development and having fun. I’m not saying that can’t happen at a higher level, but how many of your best 9U/10U end up being your best 16U/18U? This is just turning into a money grab.

Finding quality youth hockey coaches is difficult these days. Everyone thinks they grow on trees when in reality it’s more of a treasure hunt. Most stay hidden because they just don’t want to take the stress and demand anymore. #HockeyTwitter

The hardest thing I had to do was today saying goodbye to my Grandfather, who has complete kidney failure & dementia, through a dirty window at his nursing home before being sent to hospice. Due to #COVID19 I couldn’t step inside & hug him face to face. Let’s end this please!
