Unexpected lessons from a summer spent auditing my own papers: 1. Preregister what counts as an "incomplete" response & how to handle duplicates in data in advance. 2. Keep a "data provenance" document that tracks who has access to data & what each person contributes. 🧵

The only reason whatsoever that I’m included in this set of amazing researchers is that the syllabi come from all UChicago professors - but still, it’s pretty exciting!!

As always, participants reported that all of their needs were important. But they predicted that homeless people’s high-level needs were less important. They were wrong. The homeless people told us that they too cared about high-level needs(!) 13/n

We have done some simple analyses on the information provided and, just as one silver lining, a significant minority of the papers (about 40%) contain no studies handled by Gino. These papers can be treated just like any other paper despite having Gino as a co-author on them. 5/5

Interesting ideas from @ThaliaWheatley in this thread. I especially like her definition of conversation as being “a mental road trip we collectively steer.”

We find a distinction between how people see their own needs, and how they think about others’ needs. Most everyone reports that, for themselves, all of their needs are relatively important. This finding is remarkably consistent across samples. 4/n

We call this phenomenon “demeaning” because people are very literally inferring that others care less about high-level concerns like having meaning and purpose in life. We argue that this is a form of dehumanization. 7/n
