Large quantities of data = High quality of science. My new Nature Human Behaviour paper published today with
@ShuhBillSkee
shows that this could not be further from the truth. (1/10)
Confused about all the headlines today? Here is my short list of why it is currently impossible to stay anything conclusive about screen time and youth mental health:

We argue that research needs to consider adolescent development if it wants to better understand the link between social media and mental health. 1/4
Reminder about the "social media is harming girls" headlines making the rounds today. Classic case of a study that would have merited academic peer review before a major press release ... there is so much better academic work out there (a thread in 5 bullet points):
The problem:
Quasi-scientists make 💸💸💸 promoting claims about scary digital media effects
Scientists doing actual research make ❌❌❌ to correct the non-stop onslaught of these claims
When is a psychological finding practically relevant to the real world?
When its effect size is larger than a certain cutoff? When it scales over many people? When we are repeatedly exposed to it?
Short answer: it’s way more complicated than that...
On behalf of the Medical Research Council and the University of Cambridge, we are delighted to announce that Dr Amy Orben (
@OrbenAmy
) has been appointed as a Programme Leader Track Scientist at
@mrccbu
. She will commence her role on 1 Nov 2021.
Short answer: A huge impact! Running over 20,000 analyses on 3 different datasets we found that scientists could have written 1000s of papers finding positive, negative and non-significant associations between well-being and digital tech - it all depends on the analysis (7/10)
The paper powerfully visualises that without pre-registering analysis plans beforehand, analytical bias can allow researchers to tell almost any story with powerful data resources. Is this really what science is supposed to be like? (10/10)
Things I really enjoy about reviewing: Reading other reviewer comments on a paper I reviewed. I learn a lot about what I missed and what others find commendable/problematic.
Excited and humbled to have won the inaugural

Credibility Prize (Individual Researcher) alongside such great academics!
Thank you to the BNA for acknowledging & supporting the work done across the discipline to make findings more robust 🌟
When I joined

Reading today that rents are 17% higher on average than 2 years ago. Have heard locally that students need to bid to get a rented room/house.
This + energy costs will be devastating for many PhD students. If we care about diversity in academia UKRI needs to respond to this soon.

Would rather be working today, but like many other academics at the start of their careers I am set to loose just under 50% of my defined benefit pension under current proposals. I cannot let that stand.
After largely avoiding the media this year, it was a pleasure to talk to the ZEIT for this extended profile on my work. Glad it doesn’t shy away from the nuances and difficulties of my research area.

Interesting new paper out showing that we often believe others' social lives are more active than ours. Very related to current debates about FOMO and social media.

I recently almost gave a 1-hour long talk to a big tech company’s research team whilst called “Gründør the Dwarf”, as I had forgotten to change it from the previous night’s virtual D&D session. Host did not tell me when they let me in, and I only realised during the intro
