It would be incredibly unpopular, but implementing a maximum speed on consumer-grade cars of, say, 70mph would probably save thousands of lives per year.
Unreal video from Fairfax County Police. Officer was doing a traffic stop near Fairfax when FCPD says a 17 yr old driving a BMW M3 over 120 mph lost control & slammed into the pulled over car. It’s a miracle but no one involved was seriously hurt. Turn the sound up to hear it.
On my bike ride home today a driver with illegally tinted windows and a temporary license plate raged at me because I didn't run a red light.
Turns out, in one month that driver had earned $1k worth of speeding and red light running tickets.
It took about 2,500 days from President Kennedy's "We Choose to Go to the Moon" speech to the Apollo 11 moon landing.
It will take about 3,300 days from first Connecticut Avenue NW safety study to expected completion of construction in Winter 2028.
DC deserves better.
N1 coverage outside of RTS building. A protester finds the N1 reporter. "Ćale, this is for you," the emotional man says directly into the camera. He explains that Ćale died in the Zemun hospital, for lack of a respirator, and that tests later confirmed he died with COVID.
Friend witnessed aftermath of this car crash today in Georgetown, DC. Driver of black car lost control, smashing parked white mini & white truck. Smashed truck into a storefront
Black car has $2,552 in unpaid tickets, almost all for speeding. This car was boot eligible for years
Good morning from DC local politics. Everywhere safe streets have been on the ballot this year, they won.
While vocal minorities protest against bike lanes, sidewalks, and safe intersections, election after election has demonstrated they are only a fringe interest.
(A thread).
It's amazing how much DC subsidizes parking. If I had a car, I could park it indefinitely in my neighborhood for only $50/year. Compare to $768/year for a WMATA unlimited bus pass, or even to $95/year for Capital Bikeshare.
Someone is driving around DC with a fake Virginia temporary license plate that 'expired' in 2013
How? Easy. They just googled "Virginia temporary tag" and printed the first thing that came up
DC isn't even pretending to enforce traffic laws.

Lmao a friend of mine had been selected to go on Jeopardy! last year. That got long-term postponed b/c of COVID.
Finally rescheduled for this weekend - now she shows up this morning for filming and it's cancelled because Mike Richards quit!
@DBrodyReports
Agree, we should return to the rule of law. No tolerance for people who break DC laws, including DC Code 50-1731.04, which bans cell phone use while driving.
@JTrea81
If a driver is incapable of avoiding a Fixed Object, why should we trust them to avoid more fragile, moving objects such as children and my neighbors?
The way the National Park Service treats DC is shameful. If DC were a state, we'd at least have a chance at some accountability. But alas.
DC statehood is not just a democracy issue - it's a question of day to day governance.
@JetfrankFrank
Yeah, I think a ban on spoiling your kid and a ban on 17 year olds driving might also be good ideas, but those seem harder to implement than, say, requiring speed governors set to 70mph on all consumer-grade cars.
I'm saddened to hear this driver say aloud what a small but dangerous group of drivers thinks silently: that even though they are operating a two-ton machine, they do not care about the lives of the people around them.
(Not even getting started on this driver's antisemitism!)
I am a renter. The majority of the people who elected me are renters. The majority of households in this city are renters. I'm proud to fight for my fellow renters.
Property doesn't vote - people do. In our city, people matter.
Seems a little silly to poll on matters of fact, rather than opinion. And fact is, hundreds of thousands of my DC neighbors and I live here fine without owning cars. As of 2023, over 35% of DC households don't own a car!
@shadihamid
This seems almost tautological? A consolidated democracy is one that is not in danger of becoming autocratic; if a democracy turns into an autocracy, then it must not be consolidated.
Disturbed to see footage of what appears to be a driver attempting to hurt or kill a person on a bike at 9th and U NW, presumably earlier this evening. The car the assailant used has $1500 in outstanding tickets.
My understanding is that MPD has footage.
We know who the dangerous drivers are. Yet DC does nothing to get them off our roads. This driver speeds repeatedly and with impunity. It was only a matter of time before they hurt or destroyed something or someone.
DC is a wonderful city and I'm glad so many people visit us.
We simply don't have the room for everyone to bring a personal 2-3 ton, 7' wide, 16' long machine along with them.
There is plenty of room for all of us, visitors & locals, if we use our limited space respectfully.
Over 100 people rallying in support of housing our homeless neighbors at the Aston, West End, Washington DC. Speakers refer to Christian and Jewish faith obligations to our neighbors.
An anonymous group is spending up to $20,000/mo to oppose this shelter.
MPD confirmed to me yesterday that there were no arrests and no reported crimes associated with the hundreds of young people who visited U St NW on Sunday night. I'm grateful for all visitors to our neighborhood who treat it respectfully, like these visitors apparently did.
U Street is nuts right now! This is near Vermont St. It appears police are trying to disperse large crowds. Sirens are blaring and the chopper is circling. Road is blocked, preventing buses from getting through. One officer told us, “Kids. There’s no accountability.”
@wusa9
Hey
@DCPoliceDept
quick question, are you able to impound a car like this at a crime scene? Like, do your officers call the boot crew if they are dealing w/ a crash caused by a driver of a car w/ $2,500+ of unpaid speeding tickets? Or is the car allowed to leave w/o paying fines?
This should go without saying. But if you think you are for DC statehood, and then you advocate that Congress use its unaccountable power over DC to overturn a DC law that you don't like, then you are not, in fact, for DC statehood (or even for democracy).
Reminder, parking in bus lanes has always been illegal, and now DC is enforcing it!
Looking forward to the busses that my neighbors and I use moving more efficiently and safely as scofflaws change their ways in response to new enforcement.
Starting TODAY, DC will use cameras on buses to send tickets to the owners of cars illegally parked or stopped in dedicated bus lanes. Here is a story we did Friday about it.
DC's wards with the highest Black population are also those with the most victims of dangerous driving (7 & 8). Our city must also consider the racially disparate harms that come from non-enforcement of our traffic laws.
Black residents in D.C. are disproportionately impacted by traffic fines, with fewer opportunities to build wealth that would help them pay off debts. Plans to increase traffic cameras could exacerbate this disparity, according to a report from Tzedek DC.
A friend and I biked from Harpers Ferry, WV to Georgetown, Washington DC today. My first metric century (100km). Definitely glad I did it but wow am I exhausted!

Happy Capitalosaurus Day! On this day in 1898, construction workers discovered dinosaur bones in Southeast Washington DC, so far the only dinosaur remains found in DC. Capitalosaurus, likely a T Rex ancestor, was designed DC's official dinosaur in 1998.
Albanians and Serbs fought side by side against Ottoman forces in the 1389. To imply that today's Kosovo Albanians are "Ottoman colonists" is parroting the worst of Milosevic-era propaganda to justify genocide.
The Serbia-Kosovo conflict goes back literal centuries. The Battle of Kosovo between the Serbs and invading Ottoman colonists was fought in *1389*. To call the strides made in the name of peace in the last few months monumental is an understatement, and yes, Trump is to thank.
Though associated with a political break-in 52 years ago, the term Watergate is also connected to the nearby intersection of the C&O Canal and Rock Creek, and the steps behind the Lincoln Memorial that can function as a formal gateway to the capital from the Potomac.

Counter-concern-troll. "Hi principal, I saw your employee taking pictures of my child outside of work hours, without asking him permission to take a photo. I don't know what your employee plans to do with photos of my child. Could you look into it for me?"
Southeast D.C. residents are fuming after a towering development went up on a small lot they thought could not be developed. "It's just been a complete mess. A complete disaster for this neighborhood," an ANC commissioner said after a confusing process.
It is a bad indicator of community/police relations (or, really, democratic control over armed police at all) when police officers show blatant contempt for the very laws that they swear to uphold.
Some Belgrade riot police seem to be beating people completely unprovoked. These three men are sitting on a bench as a column of police walk by. Some police break off from the group and beat them. The men don't fight back, they attempt to retreat, but the police continue beating.
I'm excited to announce that I am running for ANC in Columbia Heights, Washington DC, in SMD 1B09! My priorities include safer streets for all users, building more affordable housing to counter rising rent, and ensuring responsiveness from DC government agencies.
@atfergDC
@andrewdefrank
No, but they (plus a functioning mass transit system) are probably a replacement for cars for ~50% of DC residents at a bare minimum
@HowardArenstein
My understanding is that there are videos of the alleged infractions that stop sign cameras issue tickets for. Were you able to view those videos? If so, could you post them, to demonstrate that these fines were unfairly assessed?
It's honestly remarkable that Macedonians are still as pro-EU as they are, despite all they've put up with. Greece compelled them to change their name, now Bulgaria tries to bully them to change their history and deny their language.
National Park Service: Too many people are walking off trails and damaging wildlife in Rock Creek Park. We need to reintroduce cars to protect the wildlife from the dangerous walkers.
Drivers:
DC has failed to make our streets safe. Three families were robbed of their loved ones. A daughter will never see her father again. A known dangerous driver killed them, and DC did nothing to prevent this.
In my hometown of Chapel Hill, NC, the police department is openly defying orders from the Town Council
#chtc
Town Council ordered a ban on chokeholds and the police just... didn't. The Chief did not obey
If the people, via elected officials, don't control the police, who does?
I'm shocked that when our nation is having the most profound policing conversation in decades, Chapel Hill staff ignored the vote of elected officials to ban chokeholds. We don't get to be the progressive town we claim to be if we let this slide.

DC National Guard are also out tonight, standing in the cold and rain, after an attack on a legislative branch in which they have no vote. DC and PR in solidarity.
A small number of drivers engage in dangerous and anti-social behavior. Technology like traffic cameras demonstrates that these drivers' acts of aggression are not just one-offs.
We have data; now we need action. Drivers like this should be barred from driving within DC.
This driver whipped around the corner at high speed, came inches from plowing into the stopped school bus picking up kids, sat honking at it for minutes, came out to shout obscenities at the bus driver, and then threw a rock before eventually turning around & driving away.
One person literally said the quiet part out loud - claiming dense housing at 1617 U St NW would lead to "new residents, isn't that something we should be concerned about as well as being a negative - the number of new residents?"
What a sad thing to think about one's neighbors!
It took ~2,500 days from Kennedy's "We Choose to Go to the Moon" speech to Apollo 11's moon landing.
It will take 3,300+ days from first Connecticut Ave safety study to completion of construction in late 2028 - now further delayed due to Mayor Bowser's DDOT.
DC deserves better.
Connecticut Avenue is an obviously flawed road with an unacceptable level of safety risk. Today marks the two-year anniversary of the Mayor announcing plans to redesign the corridor. I called on her to promptly complete and release revised design plans.
This was on 11th St NW, a major north-south bike route for me and many of my neighbors. Dangerous driving there risks our lives.
We need fully protected bike lanes to keep us safe from drivers like that one. And we need enforcement to take drivers like that one off of the road.
Prince Philip is concerned about unrest in Croatia, Montenegro, *and* Yugoslavia in 1953. Despite the former two being part of the latter at that time, somehow. (The Crown s1e6)
My neighbors and I now have fully* protected bike access from our neighborhood, Columbia Heights, to the Potomac River and beyond. We use it for commutes, relaxation, and exercise. Everyone in DC deserves similar safe and efficient non-car transit.
As a coda, the driver's aggressive and dangerous behavior was entirely fruitless. I soon had a bike lane again and I left the driver in the dust - he was stuck in traffic and I was already home.
Finally made it to Kosmaj this morning. What an incredible monument. A proper memorial to the fighters in Yugoslavia's antifascist struggle in this area.
Thank you to all my neighbors who voted for me! I am looking forward to serving our stretch of Columbia Heights over the next two years, focusing on exactly the priorities I named in my campaign: safe streets, affordable housing, and accountable government.
House Republicans want to stomp on home rule in order to... make it easier for drivers in DC to get away with crimes.
We need DC statehood to protect ourselves from the overreach of a body we have no voice in to make our neighborhoods less safe.
A year ago today Nina Larson was killed by a dangerous driver in Adams Morgan, Washington DC. Today, family, friends, and neighbors gathered to mourn her.
DC spends how many thousands of dollars on flex posts, and drivers destroy them in days or weeks. DC should consider following New Jersey's lead and use concrete barriers to protect cyclists. They are more cost effective in the long run than replacing plastic every few months.
Judge Chotkin, President Trump’s DC Judge, saying “our constitutionally established system of trial by impartial jury”insults the intelligence of every American. DC voted 19 to 1 for Biden. A jury pool that votes 19-1 for your opponent is inherently not an impartial jury. That is
Union busting is disgusting.
I stopped by The Wydown's 14th St NW location on my way to work this morning to express my sympathy and solidarity with the workers, who were laid off overnight in apparent retaliation for their labor organizing activities.
The design tweeted below does not support Mayor Bowser's stated goal of reducing car miles traveled in DC, or her Vision Zero goals.
Is it really worth $100 million to repave just one mile of K St NW if we're not supporting those goals?

I would love for people to be able to live above a library on U St NW here in DC. I'm hopeful that new zoning will allow precisely that at 1617 U St NW, on top of newly renovated police and fire/EMS facilities. We can have it all if we're not afraid to build densely!
@ivanastradner
I'm sorry that someone attempted to intimidate you, and glad that they failed to intimidate you. It can be hard for people in an authoritarian system to understand that people can do things out of personal conviction, not following orders from some conspiracy.

In an anti-bike-lane meeting, Alex Padro of Shaw Main Streets, claiming to represent local businesses, describes bike lanes as "the worst thing to happen since the 1968 riots" and offers this illustration.

This driver struck and injured a person on a bike last night before fleeing. They did so just a block away from K St NW, where Mayor Bowser stripped bike lanes out of a safety redesign. This blood is on her hands.
The bus/bike lanes on 14th St NW (especially near Columbia Heights metro) are almost constantly blocked by private & commercial vehicles.
This blockage delays bus riders and endangers bike riders.
I'm glad to see DC & WMATA partnering to fix this.
@gregbilling
The front illegally & dangerously parked vehicle has $2,920 in unpaid tickets, just in the past ~3 months. It is eligible for immediate booting and towing due to having at least 2 tickets each over 60 days old.
Unacceptable that DC's 911 center (run by Mayor Bowser's appointee) has 12min wait times.
Unacceptable that the US Attorney's Office (run by unelected federal officer) refuses to charge so many arrests.
DC Council passed the right laws. Other parts of govt fail to enforce them.
This is the (form) letter a friend received from DoJ. He was the victim of an assault in front of his home near Lincoln Park in December. His neighbor’s wife called the police and waited 12 minutes before someone came on the line. What a mess.
This is heartbreaking, saddening, & enraging. Fight like hell to do what’s best for your constituents, but understand & respect the local democracy we have. Imagine the chaos created if CMs ran & cried to Congress whenever they didn’t get their way…
Warsaw has recorded a single-digit pedestrian death toll for the first time in modern history. This is a huge and welcome decline over the last decade.
Katowice and other Polish cities shared similar numbers recently.
