A local to Wash. DC group that's sharing information about the planned DDOT updates to Conn Ave for significant safety improvements for ALL users of ConnAve
In a dense urban neighborhood with 10k residents on it, multiple schools, two public libraries/UDC, tons of restaurants and shops, and a freaking Smithsonian zoo, the TERRIBLE idea isn't bike lanes, its having a six lane freaking highway designed to move cars as fast as possible!

@DDOTDC
Meanwhile, yesterday I saw a group of four normal people (i.e. not lycra wearing) on personal bikes come down Conn Ave and get real confused by what to do at porter where the lanes shrunk due to concrete barriers. As a cyclist on Conn Ave frequently, it's not a welcoming space.
Sad to see
@cometpingpong
/ Bucks/ Muchas on this list of petitioners against bike lanes - especially since they actually have a PARKING LOT behind them.
@cometpingpong
tell me you've changed your mind after a
@DCBikeParty
literally used you for an end point? 🙄
Here's another community member sign! Thanks folks who are participating! Appreciate your excitement! Sign the petition to RESTORE the Bike Lanes plan here ! (and share with friends)
Great job everyone! We have fought for this for two decades and counting, no sense if giving up this close to achieving a safer, more human-centric street design!

"Just take RCP - it's where bikes belong" say the anti lane people. Okay. This morning, took Conn Ave direct to K st. 21 minutes AND 5mi. This evening, RCP. Double the distance and more than double the time. Normal people shouldn't have to bike RCP to transverse Conn Ave.
From a
@wapo
oped...
@DDOTDC
... 100% this. *every alternative route* that goes N/S to Connecticut has the problem of NOT BEING Connecticut. It is the most direct path. It has the lowest average grade. It actually has the destinations that people want to bike to on it.
Well, here you go folks, from a recent FOIA drop.
@DDOTDC
and the not parody
@DDOTDCDirector
is ignoring design engineers about safety for building projects that enrich neighborhoods to instead shill to a bunch of K st lawyers.
Wasn't even me. Thank you to the impassioned supporter still trying to combat NIMBY disinformation!
Just like with Beach Dr when RCP- NPS initially wanted to reopen the road to use motorists as a deterrent for offtrail peeps, public outcry got to a better place. Same thing here.
@J_Banister
You know what's good for downtown businesses? Recognition that the world has changed irrevocably from the pandemic and more residential and less commercial office space is needed in the downtown core. Piping cars through the city is frankly the least efficient transport method.
WARD 3 NIMBYS: ABSOLUTELY NO ONE BIKES HERE AAAARRRUUUGGHHH AND ANYONE WHO DOES IS A MIDDLE AGED WHITE DUDE IN LYCRA AAAARRRUUUGGHHH
Reality... women, children, scooters, young, old, middle aged. Go figure.
@Ward3Bikes
@WABADC
On Conn Ave at vam ness metro. A four car accident that shuts down the whole road is totally reasonable to expect when all drivers are carefully and respectfully driving at 25mph or less. Right??
@MayorBowser
@councilofdc
can we please get the road diet and safety improvements??
@dkrucoff
@Lmayer2
You guys have a couple epic threads going on Reddit for DC as well. Might break top 100 all time up voted posts with one of them, putting you up there with the trump election denier "protestors". To NOT sign you petition.
Sure, just a "bunch of white dudes on bikes who don't exist and don't ride on a hot day".
@DDOTDC
and
@MayorBowser
's new opinion of bicyclists aligns with NW NIMBY obstructionists
Cleveland Park Business Association in a 2018 survey of nearly 1,000 people found that 78% of people surveyed Walked to the commercial area, 29% took public transit. Only 18% a car. Yet 61% of space there for Cars and so little for people? Bikes are low bc Conn Ave is dangerous.
Rode over to the old McMillian filtration site whose park just opened yesterday after decades of nimby opposition from that shill Nick Delledonne and company. Beautiful. Best thing to happen to N. Capitol Street in years. These jerks are trying to block U st and ChCh common now.
@GatorArcangelo
@MayorBowser
@MotoristRights
@DDOTDC
Ah yes, the cognitive dissonance of those opposed to dedicated infrastructure "look how there's no bikes, lol why build a bike lane" and "I'm a driver and I would be aggressive to cyclists if I saw one". Nice!
Clinton Covington died at Kanawha St & Conn Ave in 2022. Now
@DDOTDC
, 2 years later, proposes addressing his legacy by removing the crosswalk where he died to accommodate vehicle traffic. Is this really the right legacy for a traffic fatality?
@adamlongoTV
So, bike lanes are out and motorists are peeved about Rosemary Cafe's streetery. But its totally cool that this car wash's business model involves having 6 vehicles queueing on the street during rush hour in the morning.
1/7 As a follow up to the "why can't you just ride in the park" post, here's a comparison of the side street infrastructure and why it is *incompatible* with bike shares (which are 3-speed, heavy bikes). I call this the "I want Chipotle and I'm at Chevy Chase Circle" test
Conn Ave is the only VIABLE North-south path in Ward 3 and you freaking know it
@DDOTDC
show me the tourist who is gonna use a
@bikeshare
on Reno hills with traffic pressure? They don't freaking exist.

Hey everyone! Yesterday the Safety Stop became the official law of the land in DC for stop signs. The No Right Turn on red won't be fully in force until a couple years from now due to signage and driver education though. Thanks
@councilofdc
for enacting this legislation!
#bikedc
This is what people visiting our national zoo see now across the street from its entrance. Conn Ave status quo is unacceptable and is a black eye on this great city. It is dangerous by design & MPD has the stats to prove it.
@SafeStreetsDC
@MayorBowser
@councilofdc
@CMFrumin
Down at the ride of remembrance.
@CMCharlesAllen
came over and talked to us. He said they spent a lot of time today talking about Conn Ave but the council is proceeding with his recommendations. And that our advocacy matters. And that those we are riding for tonight matter.
@dkrucoff
@Lmayer2
Tell that to the hundreds of people who would use bikeshares and scooters in these lanes. You are championing terrible, carcentric ideas. For what? A few parking spots? Lame.
This is yesterday at about 6:40-7pm. From downtown to Conn Ave & Calvert at 20x speed. During my ride 101 different cyclists/stand on scooter riders are seen here. Plus me = 102. So yeah. Tell me again how no one is cycling in DC? Also,
@DDOTDC
Conn Ave could be this way too.
I call this one "Empty Street Parking Isn't Safer". PSA for
@DDOTDC
,
@CMCharlesAllen
,
@CMFrumin
'cause the new plan for Conn Ave blows hard and isn't going to solve anything. U turns? Mhmm yep! Drivers using the parking lane to do dangerous passes? Yeppers! Cool.
@Ward3Bikes
Over a year after a fatal crash at the Zoo,
@DDOTDC
quietly puts up some flex posts over night to deter u-turns in the road from pickup/drop off. Taking bets on how long it takes for motorists to run these down...
Tomorrow is the
@DDOTDC
budget oversight meeting at the
@councilofdc
for public comment. Going to get an earful about Conn ave and how several thousand people are very upset about
@MayorBowser
going back on her word and prioritizing free parking over people's lives.
Just so it is obvious how freaking amazing of a year
@bikeshare
had this year... if you all were getting a grade, it'd be super close to 100%! 2022 was back at pre-pandemic levels, 2023 just blew the old levels out of the water!
Here's a reason for freaking bike lanes on Conn Ave. The bike room at one of the many dozens of large apartment complexes either directly on or off of Conn Ave, whose residents own thousands of bikes and who actually outnumber the single family residents in the impacted ANCs.
Two days ago, a person got hit on Conn Ave for the >308th crash since this was greenlit. Also yesterday,
@CondeNast
named DC the 3rd most walkable city in the country. Cutting metro/bus spending & service while blocking
@bikeshare
infra is a great way to blow that all up
Sorry to share but
@MayorBowser
has lost her courage on Connecticut Avenue bike lanes - unless
@CMFrumin
finds his courage the Avenue is just going to continue being a traffic sewer for MD commuters. So much for Vision Zero & being a world class city.
This isn't just "not acceptable." It should be an outrage. Instead, people complain about losing some parking spaces and major street safety projects slow to a slug pace.
@MayorBowser
@councilofdc
: >284 crashes on Conn Ave since Concept C was chosen.
"I am not against affordable housing, just not *here*". Sigh. Why do people think this is a valid talking point?
@TheNimbee
you gotta explain your mindset please to the rest of us normals.
On my commute last night from downtown, I passed over 100 cyclists. It was a like 5.5 mile ride. Most of them (but not all) were in the areas with bike infrastructure (including on Columbia rd thay is what is being discussed here). Idiots like this guy pretend they don't exist.
@J_Banister
Bike lanes and ebikes, bus lanes, metro investment, rental micromobility devices etc, those are all way, way more efficient ways of providing mobility vs. personal cars.
Holy jumping sharks, Chevy Chase Listserv. "Drivers do not have a strong professional lobby the way the bikers do." Wtf! Tell that to all the neighborhoods that were bulldozed for highways and roadway expansions as the automobile took over American cities... JFC😲🫨🤯
Counted no less than 15 cyclists commuting on Conn Ave this morning pre Calvert despite the fact there's no lanes. And another few that were bikeshare or scootering on the sidewalk. Build the lanes!!
The amount of references verbalized by
@DDOTDC
to things like "as you can see driving around the city" or "we all know this from driving" etc is really troubling when you're telling w3 community about how you "just couldn't find a way" to support multimodal and went with cars.
7/7 Final thoughts: If we want accessible bike infrastructure and we also want *most* people to have a chance in hell of using on *most* bikes then the only place to put that is on Conn Ave. On Conn Ave, it would be wonderful, because its a rideable road, absent the speeding cars
? -
@DDOTDC
- what connects Van ness, Tilden, porter, and Calvert bike lanes? Oh yeah. Just Conn Ave. Tell me again how you need to continue the search for a mysterious new N/S route that plays well woth the network?
"No one uses bike lanes indc" is just one of many bald-faced lies told by NIMBYs about bike lanes.
@DDOTDC
should know better since they see this data daily. But yet, they are prioritizing parking over people...🫠😬
Congrats
@bikeshare
Hey
@MayorBowser
and
@DDOTDC
- it's almost as if Conn Ave needs a safety plan. If only one was ready to go and had been worked on for 5 years? This is crash at least 307 north of Calvert since 12/15/21 when the Mayor announced her choice of Concept C.
Also, congratulations
@bikeshare
... nearly a quarter of trips were made by bike in DC according to the Streetlight Data coupled with WMATA and a huge chunk of that comes from your infrastructure!
What's in the top intersections for crashes in DC involving cars and people? Conn Ave. Which has had over 310 crashes since 12/15/2012 when
@MayorBowser
approved
@DDOTDC
's plan to put in significant safety improvements, but which has been blocked because of OMFG PARKING!!?!!!1
This is his memorial sign mounted on the nearest pole by
@SafeStreetsDC
. And the red arrow is the crosswalk
@DDOTDC
wants to remove as part of their so-called 'safety' project. Shameful.
Four or five years from now in Chevy Chase DC, there'll be a brand new community center, library, some housing, and likely some street level commercial space with a trendy grab and go sandwich/cafe spot that will be packed. And people/kids arriving by bike safely.
From streets that were shut down today because of group runs to those shut down yesterday because of misbehaving motorists on the parkway and AdMo porch fest, just a friendly reminder that...
Nijad was very impressive from the first meeting I had a privilege to have with him and his classmates.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
Allah rəhmət eləsin!
The next time someone says "DC isn't Amsterdam" - yeah? DC has Walk/Bike and public transport rates that are way more similar to every where else in the world than your suburban hellscape. So we should have STREETS more like the rest of the world and less like suburbs too.
Was thinking about a salad from
@LittleBeastCafe
tonight, but decided to *walk* to
@Blue44DC
instead, since Blue didn't sign the anti bike lane petition and Little Beast did.
Overheard coming from two dads walking behind their little girls "why isn't Wisconsin closed for this, it sure would be safer" while all these folks are out at Art All Night in Tenleytown as cars and trucks and suvs race by on the six lane highway just feet away.
@ArtAllNightDC
@DDOTDC
@DDOTDCDirector
We were always saying that the reason bike lanes didn't get done is because well heeled Chevy chase MD residents needed to drive their BMWs vroom vroom down to park at their k street law offices. Proof freaking positive here.
Thank you!

please help us get this situation corrected for all of Ward 3! Conn Ave is a dangerous road for *all* users ... nearly 300 crashes in the two years, and getting worse, not better.
Connecticut Avenue is an obviously flawed road with an unacceptable level of safety risk. Today marks the two-year anniversary of the Mayor announcing plans to redesign the corridor. I called on her to promptly complete and release revised design plans.
Everything's perfectly fine. We should totally be still prioritizing motor vehicle driving at the sake of public transport, cycling, or walking. Keep those blacktop streets nice and big - no tree canopies in the middle to distract drivers. Got the right
@DDOTDC
leader for this!
Oomph. Listserve commentary related to the accident on Conn Ave at the zoo. Yikes...
Also, bikes move at a human level scale, not a car scale. Happy to share bike space with skateboarders or scooters or rollerbladers or electric wheelchair users etc. Bike infra is inclusive.

Because it's not actually a friggin hobby, but actually a mode of commuting for a lot of people. Especially those who don't want to or can't afford sacrificing 30-50% of their monthly wages to the automobile gods.
Is it a hobby to some? Sure. Those who don't need cycle lanes.
@DDOTDC
"plan" is 24/7 parking with bulb outs and crosswalk "consolidation" and some left hand turn lanes. This screws over bus users, cyclists, even most motorists. It is *worse* throughput than concept c or the current state by a good measure.
Terrible
Last pack of us and the pace car arrived safely at the Capitol after an almost two hours of riding. Very few mechanicals and no major accidents. Great job to the more than one THOUSAND people who turned out!

"No one uses the bike lanes ever". I'm near the head of this line this morning on my daily commute in.
Also, counters are still up on Conn Ave. as of this morning.
"Hi I am an avid cyclist and I am generally unafraid to ride with cars. But I am humble enough to realize that many people are not and that bike lanes aren't for me, bike lanes are for them." - said by virtually no avid cyclist at a public hearing ever, sadly.
Some people post pictures of a middle finger at an anti bike lane sign as examples of such terrible behavior. Meanwhile my inbox is full of crap like this. Want me to start outting these people too?
