In a dense urban neighborhood with 10k residents on it, multiple schools, two public libraries/UDC, tons of restaurants and shops, and a freaking Smithsonian zoo, the TERRIBLE idea isn't bike lanes, its having a six lane freaking highway designed to move cars as fast as possible!

As a cyclist on Conn Ave frequently, it's not a welcoming space.

@J_Banister You know what's good for downtown businesses? Recognition that the world has changed irrevocably from the pandemic and more residential and less commercial office space is needed in the downtown core. Piping cars through the city is frankly the least efficient transport method.

This is yesterday at about 6:40-7pm. From downtown to Conn Ave & Calvert at 20x speed. During my ride 101 different cyclists/stand on scooter riders are seen here. Plus me = 102. So yeah. Tell me again how no one is cycling in DC? Also, @DDOTDC Conn Ave could be this way too.

This is his memorial sign mounted on the nearest pole by @SafeStreetsDC . And the red arrow is the crosswalk @DDOTDC wants to remove as part of their so-called 'safety' project. Shameful.

Four or five years from now in Chevy Chase DC, there'll be a brand new community center, library, some housing, and likely some street level commercial space with a trendy grab and go sandwich/cafe spot that will be packed. And people/kids arriving by bike safely.

The next time someone says "DC isn't Amsterdam" - yeah? DC has Walk/Bike and public transport rates that are way more similar to every where else in the world than your suburban hellscape. So we should have STREETS more like the rest of the world and less like suburbs too.

Overheard coming from two dads walking behind their little girls "why isn't Wisconsin closed for this, it sure would be safer" while all these folks are out at Art All Night in Tenleytown as cars and trucks and suvs race by on the six lane highway just feet away. @ArtAllNightDC

@DDOTDC @DDOTDCDirector We were always saying that the reason bike lanes didn't get done is because well heeled Chevy chase MD residents needed to drive their BMWs vroom vroom down to park at their k street law offices. Proof freaking positive here.

Thank you! @Thad3a01 , @ANC3B , @ANC3C , @anc3d , @TenleyANC , @anc34g and @ANC3F please help us get this situation corrected for all of Ward 3! Conn Ave is a dangerous road for *all* users ... nearly 300 crashes in the two years, and getting worse, not better.

Connecticut Avenue is an obviously flawed road with an unacceptable level of safety risk. Today marks the two-year anniversary of the Mayor announcing plans to redesign the corridor. I called on her to promptly complete and release revised design plans.

Everything's perfectly fine. We should totally be still prioritizing motor vehicle driving at the sake of public transport, cycling, or walking. Keep those blacktop streets nice and big - no tree canopies in the middle to distract drivers. Got the right @DDOTDC leader for this!

Oomph. Listserve commentary related to the accident on Conn Ave at the zoo. Yikes... Also, bikes move at a human level scale, not a car scale. Happy to share bike space with skateboarders or scooters or rollerbladers or electric wheelchair users etc. Bike infra is inclusive.

@dachesney @niawag1 @ashokbajajdc @Change Because it's not actually a friggin hobby, but actually a mode of commuting for a lot of people. Especially those who don't want to or can't afford sacrificing 30-50% of their monthly wages to the automobile gods. Is it a hobby to some? Sure. Those who don't need cycle lanes.

@DDOTDC "plan" is 24/7 parking with bulb outs and crosswalk "consolidation" and some left hand turn lanes. This screws over bus users, cyclists, even most motorists. It is *worse* throughput than concept c or the current state by a good measure. Terrible

Last pack of us and the pace car arrived safely at the Capitol after an almost two hours of riding. Very few mechanicals and no major accidents. Great job to the more than one THOUSAND people who turned out! #bikedc #rideforyourlife @Ward3Bikes @WABADC

"Hi I am an avid cyclist and I am generally unafraid to ride with cars. But I am humble enough to realize that many people are not and that bike lanes aren't for me, bike lanes are for them." - said by virtually no avid cyclist at a public hearing ever, sadly.
