an example: mckellen &holm absolutely kill it in this scene, but tolkein doesn't convey much emotion other than just "he said impatiently" or "he said gravely." I think it shows how well jackson really understood and respected the material, to be able to extrapolate so much

reread fotr recently and it's amazing how much of the dialogue is taken from the books verbatim, but with all the tone and intention that the books totally lack. they read almost like scripts for the movies
