When people say rail isn’t feasible due to the USA’s size, this is what those of us who want rail are talking about. I don’t expect rail to compete with air travel for a coast-to-coast flight. But it should absolutely compete with personal car travel for trips under 400 miles.

2 weeks ago, I took a train 360 miles from Bordeaux to Paris. There are about 20 trains a day to choose from. It takes 2 hours. This weekend, I drove 280 miles from Chicago to Detroit. It takes 5 hours. There are 2 trains a day to choose from. Both take longer than driving. 😩

PSA: Because this has become far too common, this (red arrow) is where cars are supposed to stop at intersections. The white blocked lines are a crosswalk. When that space is blocked by a car, it endangers pedestrians by forcing them to cross in less safe spots.

One of the reasons I’m so obsessed with ebikes is that I tried for years to like biking, but I just couldn’t. Hills were so hard, sometimes impossible. I had stuff to carry. I couldn’t go as fast as I needed to make it viable transportation. But my ebike has removed barriers.

What I find most remarkable about this is that the other causes of death have mild variations but mostly stay stable. So for all the people who try to compare COVID to X cause, it’s like, ok but aggregate risk of death by other causes doesn’t surge wildly.

Also, I DRIVE AND WOULD LIKE EVERYONE TO SLOW DOWN! Taking up biking has made me an even more cautious driver, and I have to say, the mental relief of just chilling when you get behind the wheel of a car can’t be overstated.

@lyzl I need to save the stories of your 11yo to prepare me for what’s in store for me in 6 years. This morning on our way to school, my 5yo turned around and threatened to walk home because she didn’t like me telling her to listen to her teacher. 😬

@HomaBashNews But this isn’t really a deadline-sensitive story. I am sure your producers pushed the timeline, but there is no reason this story had to air right then. It’s honestly not even that informative - surely you could’ve gotten info on bus speeds from transit officials.

Our policy of leaving sidewalk clearance to individual property owners is going great! Can’t imagine why I have trouble getting more families to walk to school when they live less than a mile away!

I grew up in a car dependent suburb, and I cannot imagine going back to a lifestyle where I *had* to drive to pick up a prescription, get a dress altered, and or get a burger for dinner. Density, mixed use, and safe walking/biking has become a must-have for me.

Today I biked 11 miles - to the pharmacy, the custard stand, and a crosswalk action. I also walked to my kid’s school and a tailoring shop. I ran into friends and felt the sunshine and did some activism and met someone new. What a great day. I love you, Milwaukee!
