I was in a used bookstore and overheard a mom asking for sci-fi recs for her 15 yo son. Couldn’t resist. The seller said Ender’s Game, so I sidled up and suggested the Nyxia trilogy. Her response: “Oh he raced through those. That’s why we’re here.” And I melt 🥲

@EducatorWilcox Hahaha. I definitely know my children will get better at spying as this progresses, but my son has 100% caught a whiff of popcorn on my breath when I went back to tuck him in and he sat bolt upright, "Hey. I want popcorn."

@surlybassey Kids are brutal. Students used to beta read for me sometimes. One guy came back and told me the entire third chapter had to go. I said, “The whole thing?!” And he didn’t even look back. Kept walking out the door and called over a shoulder “All of it!”

I would turn ANY of my books into graphic novels if it meant ONE kid became a lifelong reader. To be invested in kid lit means we set aside our preferences to engage young people where they’re at.

Take courage. If you're writing, querying, submitting--rejections can feel so personal. Like a condemnation of your dream. But more often, the line between 'huge success' and 'never published' is a fickle one. It hinges on interpretation. It feels more like the flip of a coin.

Reminder: my primary audience is 9th grade students who have lost their love for reading. Thats who I have in mind when I write. I do hope everyone loves my books, but thats who I'm specifically writing to engage. If my work doesn't feel "right" for you as an adult.. that's A ok.

I've thought about that so much since the book debuted. It landed at number 2 on the NYT bestseller list... but it almost didn't exist. Like genuinely came very close to not becoming a book at all. That's how thin the margins are sometimes.

A 3-year-old unwrapped Christmas presents at 3 a.m. His parents covered for Santa.

This is me in year 8 as an author. My 12th and 13th books are on the way—and I just found out that A Door in the Dark earned out. It’s a feat to survive in this industry. Truly. It’s difficult. But this is the first year I feel like I’m not just surviving, but thriving. Grateful.

Five years later, the Nyxia series still sells about 100 copies a week. No promo. No marketing. I'm not handselling it at schools. It just steadily does that on its own... and yet the narrative is that YA sci-fi doesn't sell? I feel like kids are pretty hungry for it, honestly.

Going to say this once (and loud): if you are a bookstore, setting up events for authors, your first job isn't to sell our books. Your FIRST job is to provide a safe space for us to engage with our audience. If you cannot do that, you should not be hosting digital events.

That “YA in decline” article is very interesting, especially since A Door in the Dark has the most preorders of any book I’ve ever published. There is a hunger for YA, but I do think there’s a disconnect between publishers and the actual audience: teens.
