Every morning my kids either bike or walk to school (rain or shine). My next door neighbors drive their kids to school.
Today we saw their entire family on bikes and as we passed them, they said “you inspired us”.
That’s it. I can retire.
Kids: We got peanut allergy.
Policy: Although death is rare — no one brings peanuts to school!!
Kids: We want to safely make it to school.
Policy: Although motor vehicles are one of the leading causes of death among children, we can’t slow down the traffic. Godspeed!
You can never have all three at the same time:
1) a large backyard
2) good transit system
3) accessible and walkable neighborhood
(If you do, post pics ⬇️ so we can all move there)
Women don’t always want roses and chocolates. Sometimes they want you to speak in their interest when they are not in the room. Other times they want safe bike lane and a warm hat.

It is mind blowing that almost every grocery store has thousands of square feet of car parking but the bikes/scooters/etc. get one and very impractical piece of metal.
The most normalized paradox is that a single driver who is polluting the environment can take up the entire lane no problem but a cyclist who is literally saving this world often belongs on the shoulder and should apologize for existing.
Like… NO!!!
A parked car takes up 10 times more space than a parked bicycle.
A moving car takes up 28 times more space than a moving bicycle.
The most essential aspect to city design in to acknowledge the limitations of physics.
People: e-bikes and e-scooter are dangerous.
Policy: yes, factory speed limits need to be set.
People: SUVs speeding in school zones and neighborhoods are dangerous.
Policy: yes, a flashing signs should do it.
People: The flashing signs don’t work.
Policy:
It’s interesting that something that takes up to 30% of your salary, needs insurance, space to park, and maintenance is considered a reliable and superior transportation mode while cycling is often discarded because of the rain.
Controversial opinion—
We need to put to rest the argument that e-bikes are cheating and you would get more exercise on a regular bike.
Y’all, if you’re going to work for a meeting and/or teach a class, you don’t want exercise, you want to look put together when you get there.
Drivers do not stop for pedestrians not because they are in rush but because they subconsciously feel superior.
Someone waiting in the rain to cross the street should be prioritized even if the only explanation for it is human decency.
Living in the NL ruined my life…
Every time I see a car in the bike lane or someone not stopping for a pedestrian or a pedestrian button at the intersection that takes too long I feel rage. You can’t unsee and unthink things.
There is a difference between cycling while feeling comfortable and cycling while questioning your mortality and that difference is called a separated bike lane.
Most cities are designed to allow driving always but cycling sometimes.
In fact, it’s the opposite — you should be able to cycle/walk/e-whatever always and drive sometimes.
It’s mind boggling that not wearing a helmet on a separated bike path will receive public scrutiny but driving 80mph on a highway with your toddler is considered perfectly fine.
It’s interesting how some people would raise their eyebrows at the price of $3,000-4,000 for an e-bike but borrowing $40,000 over 5 years would sound about normal.
On my way to campus today I stopped by a cafe to pick up coffee. Parked my bike within meters from the entrance, bought coffee, and e-cycled to my destination.
No circling around to find parking, no drive through, no idling.
Cycling delivers convenience that cars promise.
Requiring cyclists to have a license plate to ride to their neighborhood grocery story would be like requiring pedestrians to wear a badge while crossing the street.
The culture of a city is reflected in how fast a pedestrian crosses the street and how much guilt they are feeling for blocking the traffic.
The goal should be a normal pace and zero guilt. The reality in many places is a jog and a hand wave to apologize for existing.
Instead of telling the children literally every 5 minutes “watch for cars”, there should be a build-in speaker system inside every car that would say “watch for children & bikes” every time while driving in any city.
🚲🧍🏽♀️🧍🏼♀️🧍🏽♂️
It should not be the kids’ responsibility.
When bike becomes your mode of transport as opposed to the mode of recreation, the formal clothing becomes a part of the deal and it is a truly wonderful experience to bike in style.
If you are attending a holiday dinner, under any circumstances do not discuss that the fossil fuels are destroying the planet and trips under 3 miles should be made by alternate transportation modes. Good luck. 🎄
Has anyone ever reflected on the fact that it takes months (if not years) to produce a manuscript that most readers glance over and if we are lucky read word by word only the results section?

E-bike usage evolution:
Day 1: promising yourself to only use assist if necessary because you need the exercise
Day 2: wow…maybe the lowest assist mode wouldn’t hurt
Week 2: turbo mode on all trips
We are living in a world where giving 2 extra minutes for pedestrians to cross is a waste of time but looking 30 minutes for a parking spot is completely okay.
True level of service for cities should not be measured in number of cars per hour during peak times but whether a child can safely bike by themselves to school.
🏙 🚲 👧🏽🧒🏿👧🏼🧒🏻
It’s interesting how parking seems so valuable to everyone but yet no one wants to pay its true value.
It’s like showing up to a high-end and designer store and being surprised that the shoes are not free.
Science— Smoking is bad.
Response— High taxes and smoke free everything.
Science— Sugar is bad.
Response— Sugar free everything.
Science— Drivers put children in danger.
Response— Wait, what? 🦗 🦗🦗
When you dress for the destination and not for the journey, you are only limited by the length of the cycle path and not the length of your dress. 🚲

While e-bikes might be cheating, it’s not the kind of cheating you may think.
You cheat car ownership and sedentary lifestyle.
You cheat high emissions and fossil fuels while having a blast. 🚲
Academic writing: you can’t state anything without citing past work to back it up
Also academic writing: you must be creative and copying from another paper is plagiarism

When you hear cyclists talking about questioning their mortality, this is what they have in mind.
And no it’s not photoshopped, it’s as real as it gets.
Recently my partner got pulled over by a cop for using a GPS on his bike while going 7 mph on a protected bike lane.
Meanwhile, you can now play a game in a Tesla while going 70 mph.
There is no logic, just madness.
Academia often glorifies and rewards overwork.
There are many jobs out there but only one health, one family, and one sanity.
To me, it’s about finding a dynamic equilibrium where I keep moving but not lean in any particular direction.
