To be fair, there are only four. "Oh no, a whale", "Oh no, the French", "Goodbye, my pregnant sweetheart, unfortunately I will never come back but good luck with everything" and "Someone is drunk and an unfortunate series of events is occurring"

The quote in the article is even better "Many tombs have been found in the past ... but in all cases there was a man and a woman. What might have been the bond between the two individuals in the burial in Modena remains a mystery"
🤣 however will we solve this mysterious mystery
The mistake the govt made was thinking taking the knee was some sort of fashionable good cause. They could do their usual shaming/stoking, just like any other day in their idiot culture war.
This isn’t theoretical for these players.
Actually begging

to target commuters like me, please. Don’t go to Canning Town at 7am. You’re holding up the cleaners and security guards and key workers, people for whom lateness is likely to be a serious problem. Hold up the editors and civil servants.
I’ve watched it a number of times now and it really is that old chestnut, he’s just too stylish. Regardless of security detail and other giveaways, no Englishman knows how to wear a scarf like that.
This is where a ridiculous journalling habit comes into its own. I can see recorded the increasingly tense conversations I had with friends and colleagues, and pinpoint the day I flipped over into being terrified (11th March). I wasn't some kind of seer, this was the atmosphere.
Hindsight narrative is gaslighting on a national scale. I remember exactly what it was like in March 2020. The pressure was intense for the government to take action weeks before it did so.
All these were great errors, but the things that will stay with me are:
1. PM/ministers often guided more by PR than actual problems,
2. Info dribbled out via Twitter/paywalls and changed at last minute causing huge stress,
3. Colossal corruption, and it wasn't even competent.
For me the three biggest Government errors of the pandemic:
1) Stuck for too long in March to a totally unsuited pandemic plan
2) Allowed sick people back into care homes in first wave
3) Left it way too late to lockdown in December
Since this has taken off I just want to say that you, yes YOU, look wonderful today and you’re doing great. Don’t worry about that thing. BUY MY BOOK once I’ve written it.

Yes & there is an ongoing discussion in archaeogenetics about the extent to which Anglo-Saxon immigration pushed out the Romano British/Celtic gene pool, and I think it’s fairly clear that the bogs have spoken and “we” the mere 1500-year incomers are not welcome at all.
A guide to the UK metric system:
Milk and beer - pints
Other liquids - idk just “some”
People - feet and inches
Smaller than people - metres/cm
Bigger than people but not a distance - metres/London buses
Distances - miles
Weight (mine) - stone and pounds
Weight (sugar) - kilos
If history teaches us anything, it's that Boris's existing children will now flee into exile at the French court to build an alternative power base and this could yet end in a small pitched battle somewhere in Hertfordshire
@Prof_hedgehog
My understanding is that the children of annulled marriages are deemed legitimate (as one or both parties believed the marriage valid at the time of its solemnisation), but RC canon law around marriage is complex so I may be wrong!
@DrSKBarker
Wonder who made all their food and did all their washing and called the gas company and otherwise supported all these perfect nine-hour days
Too many saying this is some sort of easy thing for Truss. Far from it. Actually local radio is often really challenge for senior politicians. Plenty have come unstuck…
@JonnElledge
There is something profound about this never known the good times point because it’s part of older people’s mental landscape and they don’t realise it. “If you work hard etc things will turn out ok!” No, that is a historically contingent experience you have had.
The No10 defence if more fines come:
“If you’re caught speeding at 35mph four times, that doesn’t mean that you were speeding at 140mph. It doesn’t mean that you really endangered life because the cumulative effect of all your speeding in 30mph zones amounts to 140pmh, does it?”
@drooliet
@cesigno
My theory here is that it and similar stuff are actively stultifying because they represent a sort of ceding of social/political spaces in which you can actually shape your future, as opposed to pretend to. Sure hobbies are “empowering” but not as much as actual power.

is a great excuse to admire the incredible colours of the Black Hours, a manuscript produced in Bruges c. 1470 for the use of Rome and illuminated on vellum painted black! 📜💙

Love the angle of this shot and how the domestic objects in the foreground communicate intimacy. Surely one of the best photos of this visit and of the Oval Office
The driver on my train from idk mid-Surrey somewhere to London Bridge just did his we are arriving announcement in English then French, and I am honestly thrilled.
@Samfr
Absolutely none of it will be cutting through, if that’s any comfort. Too late (missed the Sundays, I was expecting a big story then), and too counter-intuitive (Kier Starmer doesn’t work as hard as Boris Johnson? lol) Amateur hour. Amateur year in fact.
@chakrabortty
“We never thought a guy with a track record of disrespecting and smashing up institutions for personal gain would smash up OUR institution”
@stavvers
Also just not true, I have been an archaeology student, sexing by skeletons is a *range* even in modern archaeology, it's perfectly common to come across "more likely but not certainly male/female" in a site report
BREAKING we have a mass email reply-all situation in higher education. A very large list has been invited to what is normally a very small meeting. Everyone’s utter bafflement knows no bounds.
YOUR HANDY REMINDER in case you encounter it in conversation that “Blitz spirit” consisted of observing curfews and following tedious draconian public safety orders for months, on pain of being publicly shamed for risking needless death. Not “doing what the hell they liked” 👍
Someone should do an FOI on this. Who advised

it was safe to digitise historical documents and destroy the originals, and was

Really disturbing that this woman works for the private co that stores the wills, and I presume they’ve told the govt that this is a safe thing to do in order to increase their profits on the contract. Clearly no consultation with govt archivists at all.
I always forget this about church services at Christmas. If you mix the four Gospels up as Christmas services often do you basically get something like a Civil Service assessment centre task where your job is to winnow out the core facts about how the census works
@theAliceRoberts
I don’t know why but Herculaneum always seems so much more atmospheric than Pompeii, an actual town-sized town with acres of these streets

I just keep coming back to seven! Months! Ten year! Relationship, that alone should have made someone in the process question this. The reasons why they didn’t are not nice to contemplate.
I keep RT stories like this and it still staggers me every time. Where has this apparent 0-60 corruption come from? You don’t acquire this level of brazenness overnight. And yet I don’t really believe public sector procurement has been corrupt for years, not on this level.
@neheritagelib
Wasn’t there also Ethiopian cavalry at either Vindolanda or Housesteads? I remember seeing a tomb, which amazed me c1997 because this wasn’t taught then. The rewriting history ppl often seems to mean “this is new to me” (and the tell is they don’t go “oh cool, new information”).
Genuinely impressed by Mr Big Jet TV's ability to simultaneously operate the camera, provide commentary, handle media inquiries and apparently keep track of some bloke playing golf.
Definitely worth an OBE at least.
Why would it be? They’ve experienced abuse from the stands or seen their teammates experience it, recently, and together, in the qualifying games. Why would their decision be anything other than heartfelt? This is why they’re coming out now when they could be lying on a beach.
Seriously

and historic built environment people should be taking note of how this works and looks. A great live experiment in how WH was used to create intangibles of majesty and power
Amazing setting for President Zelensky’s speech in Westminster Hall. MPs opposition & Govt Ministers standing shoulder to shoulder as light streams through the stained glass window
Sick at home, I am pointlessly scrolling through twitter dot com on my laptop, then am suddenly disgusted with myself and decide I will do something different with my time, which proves to be pick up my phone and open twitter dot com on there

thought, a lot of what’s happening is explicable if these people simply aren’t very online, don’t understand that serious scholars are online, and think of online as a suspect place of misinformation and abuse where their own misinformation/abuse won’t be traceable
Dec 7 // LEARNING TO LOSE. After a year mourning all sorts of things, I begin to understand why learning to lose is a very good use of my time. I didn't think it would be the case, but I actually think grieving hard has made me fear losing less & not more.
@xtophercook
And the wider cheats/altruists model of societal progress. The cheats outwit the system, the altruists build a better system, repeat. But it’s really hard as an individual altruist to truly understand that cheats exist and what they’re like until you meet one.
I’ve read a lot of great responses to the Gr*ham H*ncock Netflix series and this is by far the best, situating his schtick in the intellectual history of archaeology and highlighting its stodgy conservatism. Elitist conservatism cloaking itself in anti-elitism, seems familiar?
We are shocked and saddened to report some of our volunteer crew were verbally assaulted due to their role when reporting for duty tonight. This behaviour will not be tolerated. Thank you

BREAKING: 2.2 million people who’ve been shielding can go outside for first time tomorrow.
Either with members of household, or if they live alone to meet 1 person.
PM says “I don’t underestimate just how difficult it has been for you...I want to pay tribute to your resilience”
Must say, between this and all their individual thank-you-and-sorry messages I wasn’t expecting the following 24 hours to be nearly as full of cheering and crying as last night. But maybe that’s football, or at least, it is with these guys 👑
This whole thing is such an insight into the ruling class's exceptionalism, rose-tinted glasses and assumed privilege and so much else it makes my head spin. Did they really all think they just wouldn't get it??
Overlooked point: there is not a single university or even faculty in the land where *any* one person knows in advance about all the events that are happening in any given week. I'm an events manager, I don't know what's going on the other side of my own department.
It's been an emotional day, and I would like for us all in the UK to take a moment to reflect happily on how much this fucks up our clown car government's plans in every conceivable way.
