ANC for 3E-08 (AU campus)/ organizing for tenant, worker, student power and cities for people over cars. Lover of wild places and wild things/
tweets mine
It's official, I will be serving as the next commissioner for ANC 3E-08!! To my AU peers and Tenleytown and DC community as a whole, thank you! I promise to do my best to uplift the voices of students, tenants, and workers and fight for a neighborhood and city for people first!
A democratic socialist, DSA member is speaking at the DNC tonight during prime time. It's a big moment for our movement, who are outside the convention protesting the Democratic Party's participation in genocide. It's on AOC now to bring that voice inside the convention hall.
SFPD staffing shortage my ass they have the time to brutalize children for skateboarding. Absolutely depraved. The fact that bystanders started yelling shows that SF still has a soul.
A crowd of bystanders is shouting “Let them go!”
SFPD have brought out boxes of zip ties & officers have begun loosening then, seemingly in preparation for a mass arrest
The kids are still on the ground
This is actually fucking infuriating like holy shit. WMATA just released their doomsday budget, the mayor is literally stealing $40 million from hungry people, people are becoming homeless because the mayor won't fund ERAP, but we can find HALF A BILLION dollars for a stadium???
Letting cops choke people makes us less safe. Letting cops recklessly chase people with cars makes us less safe. Letting cops hide records makes us less safe. Locking up kids before trial makes us less safe. Criminalization zones make us less safe. THIS BILL MAKES US LESS SAFE!
DC residents deserve to be safe & secure across the District.
On Tuesday, the Council will vote on my Secure DC bill that will improve safety by increasing prevention, accountability, & government coordination.
Passage of Secure DC will make clear: safety is prioritized in DC.
With love for my fellow American University students and the whole DC community, I am excited to announce that I am running for Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner in SMD 3E08, one of two seats representing AU campus!
California YIMBY is excited about the potential of the East Solano Plan, not only for new homes, but for creating a template for growth that is aligned with our values—affordability; walkability; access to jobs, transit, and amenities; and sustainability.

Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, a leader of the party's progressive wing, will speak at the DNC tonight in prime time, according to an aide. The high-profile speaking slot is a sharp contrast to 2020, when she had just 90 seconds to symbolically nominate Bernie Sanders.
Tag yourself. I'm the "leftist", the most dangerous YIMBY. I helped put together a tenants rights training for students and spend most of my spare time fighting evictions and sweeps only to hide the fact that I'm actually some giant capitalist or something.
My Berkeley friends bravely defending people's park fought hard for Southside rezoning and more housing at North Berkeley Bart. A lot of the people calling them nimbys haven't lifted a finger for housing in Berkeley ever. I think that says everything you need to know.
People who don’t live in Berkeley characterizing pro-People’s Park activists as NIMBYs are vastly misinformed or willfully ignorant. The vast majority of us want more affordable student housing, we just want it to be built on one of the dozen other sites the UC could build on.
The grassroots SF Board of Ed Recall, brought to you by:

✅PG&E (starting wildfires every year)
✅Visa (credit card companies love children)
✅the CA Ass. of Realtors (so they can evict more working class families)

As much more likely the real youngest Indian-American Hindu(ish) elected official in the US, I strongly condemn casteism and all those who defend it. Good on Seattle. Jai Bhim
TODAY: As the 1st Hindu & Indian State Senator in Ohio history & the youngest Hindu & Indian elected official in the nation, I am strongly condemning the anti-Hindu ordinance passed by
@SeattleCouncil
last night. This ordinance is Hinduphobic & is a travesty for all Hindus. READ:
@uhshanti
and me with
@TenantsTogether
are at the capitol today rallying with tenants from across the state for
#ab2050
Ellis Act reform!
Stop speculator evictions!
Proud to be on this list with fellow unhinged anti car ideologues. Together we will win a city where nobody has to fear traffic violence and transit, walking, or biking will always be a better option than a car.
This is why I'm a *DSA centrist* lmao.
I side with the electoral strategy kinda like groundwork and SMC, and also think that only works when we have the kind of base organizing the more hardline left caucuses prioritize.
the thing is, you can’t talk about the PT’s success without talking about non-electoral movements like the MST — who are very often in tension. my concern with some strains in DSA is not the electoral & policy engagement, it’s prioritizing it over having. you know. *A base*
Some notes...
I really wasn't using any method to this, just scrolling thru apartments dot com and zillow rental listings (this time in Berkeley and Oakland specifically). I've rarely seen listings that are openly discriminatory, but they do exist and I found some today.
It saddens me to see children supporting continued segregation and disinvestment.
But it also angers me to see public dollars propagandizing this view to preserve the status quo.
All I'll say about the banana discourse is that it is not primitivist to believe that low-wage plantation agriculture, the violent dispossession of smallholders, deforestation, and US/corporate backed coups and dictators are really bad and that we all need a future without that.
Maybe this is just what my feed looks like but I'm seeing a lot more YIMBYs in CA mad that socialists are opposing Alex Lee's social housing bill than socialists publicly criticizing the bill.
Very cool
@SFBART
. Yes being homeless isn’t a crime but making it unpleasant for paying riders should be. Normally I don’t care but this time it’s bad. Isn’t this what CIS was made for?
@DeanPreston
@CAREALTORS
My dude Matt Haney is literally a renter and supports overturning Costa Hawkins and building social housing. Not really in any sort of alliance with the realtors there
@bufordsharkley
I think there is a difference between pro housing policy positions (which I broadly support but it gets complicated with details) and YIMBY as a pro growth political identity which I cannot identify with.
Just got off an
@sfbart
train with police and onto one with ambassadors. The vibes on this one are a lot safer. Good to see unarmed nonviolent public safety presence.
(1/10) I’m grateful to
@SanDiegoPride
for showing all of us that common ground *can* be found between LGBTQ+ first responders and activists. This news makes me very hopeful that we can still forge an acceptable compromise with
@SFPride
.
Reflexively went to open up
@DCist
this morning, like I do almost every morning. Then remembered it's not there. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
@wamu885
you've left a gaping hole in the DC community by killing DCist.
If the results hold as they appear and I take office this is a warning to Tenleytown and Friendship Heights businesses as well. Illegal acts against workers show contempt for the law and I will have no choice but to challenge your liquor license if violations occur.
If workers at your business in Woodley Park choose to unionize, this is your first and final warning: If you commit an ULP— I will move to remove your liquor license. I will use all of the powers at my disposal to fight back on behalf of the workers.
Forcibly displacing people is always wrong, doing it in February in the middle of hypothermia season is unconscionable. Sweeps kill our neighbors. Shame on
@DMHHS_DC
and
@NationalMallNPS
. This is a blatant assault on the lives of DC residents and DC values.
Scoop: A letter obtained by The Post notes that DC officials wanted the McPherson Square encampment gone by Feb. 1. The National Park Service instead moved its planned April sweep up to Feb. 15 — mid-hypothermia season — citing public safety concerns.
@IDoTheThinking
@cafedujord
I think as a side note to this, high schools (and colleges during freshman orientation) need to do a much better job teaching how to drink safely instead of ignoring it completely or trying scare tactics to stop kids from drinking at all (which obviously doesn't work).
"us yimbys need to stick together" is kinda why I stopped being one. Orienting your politics based on a single issue leads to ignoring the fact that some members of the big tent actively believe in violently excluding poor people from the city.
@noelanifix
GrowSF and East Bay for Everyone are both great. They're both fighting for more housing, more infrastructure, and cutting red tape. The two orgs' policy platforms are incredibly similar. I don't see the need for infighting - we YIMBYs need to stick together!
A historic district in Chevy Chase will only serve to maintain historic racial and economic exclusion. This cannot be allowed to take place. Chevy Chase and upper northwest more broadly need a lot more housing, and especially a lot more deeply affordable subsidized housing!
Capitalism is when wanting more neighbors. Capitalism is when wanting my friends to be able to live near where they go to school. Capitalism is when not wanting to be forced to use a car. Capitalism is when new immigrants have places to move into in cities, not just exurbs
I am not running for re-election for ANC 3E08. I am graduating at the end of this coming school year and this will not serve another term representing AU campus. I am so grateful to the AU community for trusting me to represent student interests!
None of us want to see suffering by civilians on any side, whether it’s in Israel, whether it’s in Gaza, whether it’s anywhere else. And we’re working together to do our best to protect them. -
@SecBlinken
If you're a YIMBY and you supported these people and you haven't actively done anything to stop this bullshit don't ever talk about exclusionary communities or homeless people ever again. You are no better than the worst of what we saw in milbrae last week.
welcome to San Francisco, where a solid 75% of “pro-housing” candidates past and present were out at a rally today holding signs and chanting slogans indistinguishable from Atherton Nextdoor or the Sean Hannity Show
So proud of the tenants rights training AU YDSA and
@StompSlumlords
put in tonight! AU students are done with landlord exploitation on and off campus. We're done with substandard living conditions in dorms. We're ready to fight back!
Cool shit like this happens when pro housing advocates work alongside the tenant power movement. This is how we move housing justice forward. There's so much more work to do but I'm proud of Mountain View tonight!
🧵
Big housing wins today in MV. The following policies have majority support for exploration, and will be taken by staff, analyzed, and *potentially* added as programs to a future housing element draft.
4-2 support for COPA/TOPA program that also applies to mobile home parks
Look who I ran into on Capitol Hill today!
He may be just a bill for now, but we're working hard to pass
#BuildBackBetter
into law so we can lower costs for families, expand affordable health care and child care, and create good-paying jobs.
It's wild to me how many YIMBY twitter warriors' only response to the fact that millions of tenants are on the brink of homelessness is to try to score points by dunking on the people trying to do something about it. Most YIMBYs irl are so much better than this but holy shit.
This!
And I will add that as a left wing YIMBY from the peninsula/south bay...I don't think anyone who supports encampment sweeps is a YIMBY, even if they call themselves one. If you're an anti poor people NIMBY, you can't be a YIMBY imo, regardless of what buildings you support.
This is important wrt DSA statements etc. A statement rightly condemning Hamas won't make Hamas stop atrocities. Raising a voice against US support for Israel when it's committing genocide in Gaza has a very very narrow chance of slowing down the flow of weapons and saving lives.
most liberals care more about feeling that they, personally, are a “good person” in an abstract sense rather than the actual material impacts of their words and actions
Canvassing for
@Janeese4DC
and just got to explain to someone that they can vote as a non citizen in DC and saw how excited they got! I love this city so much!
Note to lefty groups... please do your fun events at places that people under 21 can get into or make arrangements to make that possible when you do them at places that normally don't allow it. Getting blocked from hanging out with comrades sucks.
I'm Hindu(ish) and of course I don't celebrate a monument to religious violence being built in honor of a chauvinist ass of a deity.
This shit is fucking embarrassing.
Anyway jai bhim and long live a secular India. May the fascists all face the full wrath of Maa Kali.
@Horrgs
You do know that if not for high-density infill development, new housing gets built by paving over farmland and wetlands, right? Like this is a question of either replacing this golf course with housing or losing acres of ecologically valuable open space.
As Americans we owe to Palestinians and the whole world to fucking try everything we possibly can to move people in power (and elect people in power who are more likely to be moved). Will it work? Who knows. It's still what we have to do.
It's pretty gross that
@MitchOFarrell
organized someone to use their 6th grader to call-in & encourage encampment sweeps!
12% of the total unhoused pop. in Los Angeles are children. Mitch + friends manipulated children to call in while 10s of 1000s are unhoused/housing insecure
Capitalism is when tenant unions rent strike and win, capitalism is when tenants initiate a TOPA process and throw off an asshole landlord, capitalism is when a radical badass tenants union comes together with climate activists and YIMBYs and fights for social housing
Capitalism is thinking that the neighborhoods and cities that have a housing shortage imposed by decades of capitalist, racist structures maybe, just maybe shouldn't be frozen in amber
There may not be anyone on the ballot but I am still running as a write-in!! If you live in Cassell, Leonard, Anderson/Centennial, Roper, or Duber I'd be honored to have your vote! DC issues affect students directly, so it's extremely important we make our voices heard!
Though we won't know for sure until all the ballots are counted and board of elections reports write in results in the next few weeks, I am feeling confident about my campaign for ANC 3E-08.
Once again, a huge thank you to my AU and DC community!
Enforcing our way out of traffic violence is an endless game of whack a mole. Real effective traffic safety measures are made of concrete and steel not cameras and cops.
"Zero traffic deaths" is a difficult goal.
But I firmly believe that if we:
— Use cameras to ticket people who speed
— Seize the cars of people who don't pay their tickets
We will end up with less speeding and fewer deaths
At the urging of my community, I’m strongly considering for City Council! District 7 deserves a bold leader who fully listens to the needs of our community and continues the radical history of Berkeley’s Southside neighborhood.
Lmao I got banned from twitter last night until now since my account dates back to when I was underage. Looking at how housing discourse has been today I'm taking that as an awesome birthday gift from twitter!
Crying on the H2 bus is not the ideal way to start the morning but here we are.
Burnout is a beast. And holy fuck I hate landlords and their apologists.
