Bail for the right-winger who allegedly assaulted students with a deadly weapon at UCLA: $30k
Bail for nonviolent protesters arrested for occupying an abandoned building owned by UC Berkeley: $120k

I’m gathered right now with 50+
Jewish Berkeleyans for our Seder at the Gaza Solidarity Encampment at Sproul Plaza. As we prayed, sang, and ate, a woman shoved a camera in our faces. She refused to leave when asked and continued yelling and disrupting our holy religious ceremony.
I’m a Jewish Democratic Party Delegate. You don’t speak for me.
Many Jewish Democrats feel far safer calling for justice with our Palestinian friends and neighbors than we do being represented by pro-ethnic cleansing, anti-ceasefire bigots. History will not look kindly upon you.
She said “I’m not Jewish. I have a nose but I’m not Jewish.” Another man called us antisemites.
Fortunately, our allies, many of whom are Muslim, ushered her away so we could continue to pray in peace.
This is what I mean when I say Zionists make Jews on our campus less safe.

Hi Dean!
In 2019, I led a 10,000-person march on Congress for a Green New Deal (you opposed it btw). In 2022, I rallied with
@RepBarbaraLee
for reproductive rights. This year, I was arrested while filming my unhoused neighbors being displaced by cops.
Now can I oppose genocide?
Imagine if college students put as much energy into protecting reproductive rights, and reducing poverty, homelessness, crime, and other injustices. In America.
Imagine.
Endlessly grateful to Jewish leaders like
@brookespeeking
and our non-Jewish allied community members for acting swiftly to maintain our sacred space within the UC Berkeley Gaza Solidarity Encampment.

Hi
@wutrain
, I just remembered we’re mutuals! I’m disgusted that you sent cops to arrest NEU & Emerson students protesting U.S. funding of genocide in Gaza.
Call off the cops, drop the charges, and call for a ceasefire.

I am receiving news that, on its deathbed, America accepted the light of Islam and unhesitatingly recited the shahada. Truly there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet!
People who don’t live in Berkeley characterizing pro-People’s Park activists as NIMBYs are vastly misinformed or willfully ignorant. The vast majority of us want more affordable student housing, we just want it to be built on one of the dozen other sites the UC could build on.
I was arrested around 2am last night at People’s Park while filming the cops shoving non-violent protesters. I was standing exactly where a cop had told me to stand. I was grabbed by at least five cops without warning, forced onto the ground, and placed in metal handcuffs.
NEW: 100+ people rally on Telegraph in support of People’s Park as UC Berkeley continues to wall off the site with double-stacked shipping containers. Seven people were arrested early this morning but have since been released. Read more in

I had a great time at our UC Berkeley Jewish Voice for Peace chapter’s Hanukkah party on Friday (featuring a challah wrapped in keffiyeh for Shabbat)! I love my East Bay antizionist Jewish community ❤️
I did want to say to my jewish mutuals I hope yall are having a good holiday, I dont know much about hanukkah but I hope your time is filled with love and peace. I know a lot of yall have been isolated from communities for being pro palestine but just know we appreciate you a lot
Calvin Yang, a member of Students for Fair Admissions, speaks out after winning the U.S. Supreme Court case against affirmative action:
“Today’s decision has started a new chapter in the saga of the history of Asian Americans.”
Jews at Cal are not monolithic. I may be in a bubble, but the MAJORITY of my fellow UC Berkeley Jews that I know personally are pro-Palestine.
@jonesblakej
falsely homogenizes all Jewish Cal students and lumps all of us in with the Zionists who make our campus less safe for all.
“This is student against a student,” Berkeley’s chancellor said. “It’s faculty against faculty. It’s internally the most divisive protest issue that I’ve seen.”

@brookespeeking
Just to clarify, this was a white middle-aged non-Jewish Zionist woman who kept talking about her “freedoms as an American.” She said she was “credentialed media,” but explicitly said she was “not a reporter.”
not really the point, but I’ve only ever heard gentiles call it “challah bread.”
@yuhline
calling it “challah” and
@RitchieTorres
calling it “challah bread” shows who actually knows something about Jewish culture.
I was invited to a home of a Jewish constituent. This is their place. Their snacks. The challah was baked for me by a friend’s wife and he had brought it there and asked for a picture. His posting this photo that he asked for was actually a thank you from his wife.
While the media ignores them, students at community colleges ARE protesting genocide too.
They have far fewer material resources to leverage but are just as important. I’ll flag them in this 🧵 as I learn about their efforts.

Hi
@RepBarbaraLee
, I’m a proud supporter and constituent of yours, as well as an antizionist Jew.
This resolution declares that I, a Jew, am antisemitic for daring to oppose Israel’s apartheid’s regime (according to

Please vote no!

A new House resolution, which may be voted on as early as tonight, "clearly and firmly states that anti-Zionism is antisemitism." This comes after a previous resolution hinted at that claim, but did not fully state it. So now Congress wants to leave no question.
But there's an
To the people saying “so you don’t want housing built in your backyard,” I support housing at Site J, a parking lot that is closer to my apartment than the park!
If the exact People’s Park development was done there instead, I’d support it. I just don’t want the park destroyed!
People who don’t live in Berkeley characterizing pro-People’s Park activists as NIMBYs are vastly misinformed or willfully ignorant. The vast majority of us want more affordable student housing, we just want it to be built on one of the dozen other sites the UC could build on.
Plastic straw bans are inherently ableist.
They also codify blaming individuals for the climate crisis instead of the corporations that are actually at fault.
0.03% of trash in the ocean is plastic straws. 46% is from the fishing industry.
Systemic change > individual actions.
I graduated from UC Berkeley as a History Major and Public Policy Minor!
I wrote a thesis and received high honors; it’s called ““We Want the Park!”: The Social Movement Tactics and State Strategies of Building, Defending, and Destroying Berkeley’s People’s Park.”
Many prominent local YIMBYs support saving the park, the last green space in the entire southside neighborhood. This is not a YIMBY-NIMBY issue, it’s about attacks on third spaces, political opportunism, overpolicing, and the gross misuse of taxpayer and tuition funds.
I’ve certainly experienced plenty of antisemitism in my life, but American Jews continuing to center our feelings while Israel carries out a genocide in our name is super gross.
I’ve experienced only kindness from Palestinian friends, classmates, and strangers since October 7.
I'm almost 40, unmistakably Jewish, and have experienced real antisemitism in America a single-digit number of times (none of which were since 10/7/23).
Our govt is slaughtering Palestinian kids by the thousands. I think it would behoove us to focus on that.
I can’t wait to be invited back by
@UCBerkeley
in 30 years for a panel on “the historic student divestment movement.” The UC loves taking credit for social movements it opposed years later (Free Speech, anti-apartheid South Africa, etc). Palestine won’t be any different.
Right now: Berkeley students chanting "hey hey, ho ho! the occupation has got to go!" so loud they stop the ceremony & are threatened with removal. Admin's response: drown them out with Journey's "Don't Stop Believin" --a paradox? Don't stop believin'!
@BernieSanders
was the only 2020 candidate who met with us face-to-face. Not only that, he took the time out of his lunch break do so. Thank you Senator, for talking with us and fighting for our future.
If you’re an activist with a large social media following and you’re not constantly lending your platform to indigenous leaders, POC organizers, and frontline youth, you’re doing it wrong.
For days since his recent betrayal(s),
@yuhline
has still been telling people to vote for Mondaire Jones against his GOP opponent.
Even with that, he blocked her.
He’s just a childish sore-loser who can’t get over the fact that she finished above him in 2022.
UPDATE: Bancroft Way is being cordoned off at College Avenue as police continue to search for suspects. At least one individual was handcuffed near the scene, according to eyewitnesses. Read the breaking story here:
I have climate activist friends who have been arrested for protesting in their state capitols.
Why are science-denying conspiracy theorists with guns getting better treatment then kids with signs?
Guillotine candidates love refusing to accept fair union election results.
As a result of this decision, bosses who fart around breaking laws or refusing to accept reality once it’s clear the workers won their union, the NLRB can just order them to start bargaining in good faith
In 2019, I had a meeting with Chuck Schumer on climate change. At one point, he excitedly ran out of the room to grab his iPad and showed us a video of his toddler grandson crawling after a ball that looked like the Earth (a metaphor for young people saving the world ig).

I currently can’t go outside because of the smoke. My bags are packed and in the car in case we’re evacuated.
Right now, I need more than platitudes from elected officials.
I need more than “you’re so inspiring” from adults.
I need actual policy.
We need a Green New Deal.
We’re gonna win this election. Then we’re gonna fight like hell to fundamentally transform this country. Join me,

What we have to remember is that we don’t support Bernie for who he is, we support him because of the values he stands for. Bernie is a leader of this movement but he isn’t the movement. Those values are. They are still alive in all of us. We’ll keep fighting, no matter what.
I just got word the Berkeley City Council wants to schedule the Special Election for District 4 on May 21, weeks after students leave for the summer.
For them to hold an election in a district that is 50% students when no students are in town is full-on voter disenfranchisement.
I said no, of course, but imagine the kind of damage I could have done with Chuck Schumer’s fully unlocked and passwordless iPad.
Moral of the story: Senators should have passwords on their devices and their staffers shouldn’t make them so easy for 17-year-olds to steal.

Saturday’s ridership was 73% of pre-pandemic w/ no major events in the Bay Area.
We had 6,000 SFO trips!
-It wasn’t long ago we closed at 9pm during the height of the pandemic.
-30 minute frequencies are gone.
-Nightly single tracking through the tube is done.
Welcome back!
More student and elders were arrested and brutalized today for simply walking in public. Berkeley’s streets have been militarized and people are being forced to show their IDs just to access their apartments. UCPD has taken over entire city blocks outside of their jurisdiction.
both funny and infuriating to see elected officials and media outlets portray Columbia University students who support Palestine as violent mobs when in reality, we are a bunch of nerds sitting on the grass.
I appreciate the statements from
@SashaReneePerez
and
@ib2_real
denouncing attacks on students and reporters at UCLA last night, but I wish they’d be more specific in describing who was doing the violence (right-wing Zionists) and who was being harmed (anti-genocide protesters).
This graffiti is antisemitic and does nothing to help Palestinians in Gaza. Those occupying the building would be wise to paint over it for both moral and strategic reasons.
Our movement is about justice and liberation for all people From the River to the Sea.
Right up front: we’re shaken, but safe.
@RohinGhosh
and I were walking towards the Juneteenth celebration along Grand Avenue last night when we heard What sounded like fireworks. We heard screaming and people began running towards us, yelling that there was a shooting.

15 people were shot last night following Juneteenth celebrations near Lake Merritt.
OPD Chief Floyd Mitchell said today that his officers recovered 50 shell casings along the street, the result of multiple gun battles.
They didn’t know what to charge me with, so one of them (who wasn’t even there when I was arrested) literally googled it. While detained, I heard the cops strategizing about arresting a certain amount of people at random. This selective enforcement was clearly to send a message.
I am proud of my academic & professional achievements, and to have studied under some of the leading neuroscientists of the country.
But I’m disappointed that SF politics have devolved into smear campaigns to distract us from the issues.
So let's get into the facts. 🧵
A big reason why the UC was able to sweep People’s Park in January was because they brought hundreds of UCPD officers from other campuses to Berkeley.
With other encampments rising up across different UCs, they can’t do that again and leave the other campuses unattended.
BREAKING: Students at UCLA have established a Gaza Solidarity Encampment on campus this morning, joining thousands of pro-Palestinians protesters across the country calling for their universities to divest from Israel.
I am thankful there were no serious injuries to officers or protestors.
A total of 210 arrests were made by the UCLA Police Department for Failure to Disperse. Further inquiries regarding the arrests should be directed to the UCLA Police Department.
oh my god it wasn’t a Hanukkah party, it was a city council meeting where people were making public comments about a ceasefire resolution. Please do like 30 seconds of research before you post.
I was a student at

in 1968 when students occupied Hamilton Hall. My classmates, who were draft age and deeply concerned about Vietnam, had a real and personal stake in the protests. And even then, I felt the occupation of campus buildings was wrong—because it violated

Elected less than two weeks ago and already using her platform to fight for justice.

I am proud to support the Gaza Solidarity Encampment at UC Berkeley's Sproul Plaza and endorse the demands of the UC Berkeley Divest Coalition.

To my knowledge,
@KateHarrisonD4
is the only councilmember who has denounced this. To the others, especially

, you started your political careers claiming to be anti-establishment progressives. Was all of this violence worth selling out to UCPD?
The iPad very obviously did not require a password to unlock it. After the meeting, he left the room and left the iPad on the table. We talked to his staff for a few more minute and then left. As we walked out of his office, one of his staffers asked me if the iPad was mine.
