This historical research shows that working conditions are determined by power relations and institutions, and not simply by supply and demand. These findings are also relevant for modern labour markets, e.g. for migrant workers in Gulf countries, Europe or elsewhere. @tomraster

❓How much do pioneers increase total exports? 🅰️25-33% per town, but only for the 12% of trade links that survive in the long run ❓Why this low average survival rate? 🅰️Pioneers select less distant ports, but more distant ports survive! ❓Too few pioneers? 🅰️ Likely yes!

IV #1 : sea ice ▶️Baltic Sea ice is highly varied and uncorrelated between seasons ▶️ My own machine learning model predicts ice at ports for each day from 1500 to 1856 ▶️Ice reroutes captains to new ports if their existing destinations are frozen, creating “accidental pioneers”

Identification is #2 key advantage of historical Baltic setting ▶️No fast communication, icebreakers, weather forecast ▶️Therefore: Quasi-random voyage-level "events at sea" that create pioneers: IV #1 : sea ice IV #2 : random encounters between captains

▶️No causal or long-run evidence because of lacking: #1 Data: no market-level or long-run granular firm data #2 Identification: pioneering is highly endogenous (strategic selection + policies) In my JMP, I overcome both those challenges by drawing on a historical setting...

Background ▶️Insufficient experimentation relative to a social optimum is a general concern in economics ▶️ In trade this concern is very pronounced: exporting has high fixed costs and discoveries might be publicly shared ▶️Insufficient pioneers? If true: large market failure

I disagree with this view, and it is almost certainly wrong. In 1897, Pareto proclaimed in the JPE that he had devised “an effectively complete theory of international trade”. We’ve made a bit of progress since then! 😅

However, 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 distant trade partners are more lasting and more active in the long run! Hence, the choice of pioneers is not optimal! This also explains why forced experimentation due to ice particularly boosts trade: pioneers are forced out of their comfort zone!

Final point that pioneers matter for aggregate trade: Pioneer characteristics matter! More experienced pioneer captains (those who traded on more dyads, with more products, and have been on more voyages) create more lasting trade links.

What do those findings imply? Only a small fraction of the effect of pioneers is through their own trade - the rest is through spillovers. Great for pioneers' social relevance! But also concerning: low private incentives to pioneer ➡️likely too few pioneers Room for policy!

The average effect of pioneers is reduced by their selection of ports. ▶️ On average, pioneers select 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 distant ports ▶️ Distance: kilometers, but also religion, language and product mix (relative to the origin port or the origin port’s existing trade partners)
