Since we are talking about PhD admissions, I want to announce that I wrote "casual relationships" instead of "causal" in every statement of purpose I submitted. I believe those PhD programs rejected me solely because of this and nothing else

The life of a female academic: Conference organizers realize their panel is all men 2 weeks before conference. Ask you to sit on panel--say you do not have to speak, but can if you want. 🙁 Here is how my rockstar colleague dealt with it (go to 1:27).

For no reason at all, I remember that my micro theory professor said he asked "what is that little square on the Blackboard" during his first year of PhD and everyone turned around to look at him. He apparently told that story in class every year and we did feel better!

In March 2015, Yiran was rejected by all the PhD programs he applied for. In his own words: "it is easier to handle the sky falling down than (receiving these rejections)" At that time he was pursuing a master degree at U Chicago and on track for a research assistantship (1/6)

The actual wait time is much much longer. For example, the website says the wait time for a student visa in Canada is 30 days, while in reality no embassy except the Vancouver one has any appointments and the earliest appointment in Vancouver is Aug 2023.

Later the author visited Yiran in Chicago and stayed at his place. It was cold. Yiran went ahead to adjust the heating pipes and the pipes generated extremely loud noises. Yiran shrugged and responded: "there's nothing to do about it" (3/6)

I don't know about anyone else, but I really miss in person seminars and conferences. They were my favourite aspects of my PhD journey to date and would reinvigorate my own research. Despite other benefits, I have struggled to engage with the online format.
