I’ve noticed an increasing chorus of voices advising high-school graduates to take a gap year rather than start their college education online. This strikes me as *spectacularly* bad advice.
More from
@Caltech
: air purifiers in literally every indoor space, including classrooms, cafes, toilets (in this case quietly humming away under the
@CDCgov
fomite propaganda).
@UBC
, how about taking a leaf from their book?
Guys, I took Econ 101, actually got a PhD, and have taught Econ 101 for the better part of a decade. You know what? Econ 101 is not conservative propaganda.
First, what are they going to do with their gap year? Travel the world? Get a job in the worst labour market in a century, competing with many overqualified unemployed people?
8 kids with COVID at one of the UBC daycare centres. Of course, they all caught it from their families; no transmission could have possibly happened at daycare. The virus knows better than that.
If by some miracle they land a job… how is a job over zoom (or a job that can give you COVID) somehow better than an education over zoom? If higher education is constrained by COVID, the rest of the world is as well.
For the first time in the pandemic,
@UBC
is going against the explicit recommendation of the PHO and starting T2 classes online. Hopefully a harbinger of more independent thought and action in the face of an increasingly unhinged public health policy.
The single blood products organization in Canada dropped its mask mandate to cater to the anti-science crowd. Apparently the anti-science crowd is not that big on donating blood. Surprising no one, supply is now critically low. Great move.
Canadian Blood Services says it has three days worth of O+ and O-, five days worth of A+, A- and B- and six days worth of B+ blood products, according to its national inventory.
Wastewater COVID levels in BC now in the same order of magnitude as with the onset of omicron. That was so much fun that we decided to do it all over again, giving it an extra push by ditching masks in hospitals. Enjoy playing Russian roulette!
When British Columbia institutes a therapeutic approach that significantly differs from standard worldwide practice, you can bet your last dollar they are running an experiment on the population without informed consent.
You do not feel like paying brick-and-mortar tuition fees for an online education. I get that, and think universities could make some goodwill gestures. But large tuition cuts are not going to happen. Teaching online is actually costlier than doing it in person.
Yes, none of this is as good as it would be without COVID, but that world no longer exists, and is not coming back. Systemic shocks hit everybody. The faster you adapt, the best chance you have at thriving in the new statu quo. This still means getting the best education you can.
How much is that job going to pay? The salary differential between high school graduates and college graduates is enormous. Looking at your life as a whole, would you rather maximize your low wage or your high wage years?
Vancouver Island healthcare workers must isolate for five days if they test positive for covid, so CMHO Reka Gustafson is recommending they do not test at all. And, with sterling logic, if they test against her recommendation, then the five day period does not apply.
#covidReka
Apply next year? Sure – you’ll have to compete with next year crop of high-school graduates, plus all those who took a gap year like you. New graduates will have fresher recommendations, knowledge, and grades.
Travel from Tsawwassen to Hope = all good.
Vancouver to Whistler? No prob.
Kelowna to Williams Lake = check.
Cross from East Van into Burnaby = blowing it for the rest of us.
BC's government mantra is to never fail to disappoint.
Dr. Henry's position as PHO has become untenable by any ethical standard. The first indication of whether David Eby truly intends to change the tune within the
@bcndp
government will be whether he requests the resignations of Henry and
@adriandix
.
Since schools will not provide stats on absenteeism we’ll have to make do with anecdotes. In my daughter’s
@VSB39
3rd grade class 12 out of 24 kids did not attend yesterday (her included). Much to Bonnie’s chagrin, parents do not seem to be signing up for mass infection.
#DBH
just said 5-11 year olds that get COVID can bring it home. I thought they were getting it at home? They are certainly not getting it at school, are they? 🤡
The way Dr. Henry is twisting herself in knots to reconcile the "COVID in children is no big deal", "schools are safe", and "every child needs to be vaccinated" messages is remarkable.
What you are paying for is the option of having your remaining seven semesters be brick and mortar, and a degree from a recognized institution. This has not change, and captures the bulk of the value of your degree.
That said, I am not worried at all about high school graduates taking the wrong advice. Our program currently has the highest number of accepted offers of admission ever, and that seems to be the case for universities all over. The kids are all right.
Two days to go until my first fall term lecture at
@UBC
and the COVID absence emails are already coming in strong. My students are covered: all my lectures are live-streamed and recorded. Faculty? There but for the grace of God go we.
Would your spouse like to work while you pursue your degree? The US won’t let them work. The UK won’t even let them live with you. Come and join us at
@ubcVSE
!
From today, the majority of foreign university students cannot bring family members to the UK.
In 2024, we’re already delivering for the British people.
Have you thought about the world you will graduate into? When you start your college degree determines when you finish it. If the COVID situation resolves in the next 12-18 months, then 2024 sounds like a good time to be hunting for a job.
Dr. Henry is now an international celebrity, and not in a good way. Her anti-masking, pro-infection ways have earned her the attention of epidemiologists and aerosol scientists. Her net contribution to BC public health has long been negative. It's time for her to go.
#bcpoli
This is misinformation—Dr Henry (BC🇨🇦 health chief) believes infection on top of 2 shots gives “longer/stronger” protection—NOT TRUE vs boosters. She also callously forgets possible side effects of hospitalization, infecting others, &

I gave my two main exams last week, but still have a make-up on Monday. Yesterday I decided to move it online. I can't fathom forcing students and invigilators to spend two hours locked up in a room after all that transpired with large exams at
@UBC
these past few days.
The B.C. Ministry of Health told me that it 'accidentally' published new advice on face masks for the public.
The webpage stayed up for a day before it was changed.

Four family members, four different appointments for flu shots, at four different locations, on four different days.
Last year: one 15 minute appointment for all four at the pharmacy.
Brilliant job fixing what wasn't broken,
@ImmunizeBC
. This is sure to foster vaccine uptake.
Any given day, about 5% of my students
@UBC
miss class/exams because of respiratory symptoms. Of those that voluntarily share more, 0% are getting tested for COVID.
@UBC
, meanwhile, brags that there is very little COVID on campus. See no evil...
I’m having trouble interpreting the tweets coming from the Ontario side of my feed. Are people offered Moderns shots actually turning them down and holding out for Pfizer? What fresh idiocy is this?
I am glad
@jjhorgan
can receive his needed surgery today. I wish that was true of all of those whose surgeries have been postponed, canceled or not even scheduled because of his dismal management of the pandemic in BC.
#bcpoli
Another children’s hospital telling patients not to go to the hospital if they are sick (because we all take our children to the hospital when they are feeling great).
They would rather deny care than require masks. The brain rot runs deep.
Not feeling great? Your appointment can wait. If you or your child are coming to one of our clinics but are feeling sick, please call & rebook your appointment for when you are well. Thanks for helping keep our patients and staff safe & healthy.
So
@VCHhealthcare
states, on the basis of ZERO scientific evidence, that asymptomatic testing is “not accurate nor useful”. Might want to chat with, for example,
@GovCanHealth
, which requires negative PCR tests to enter the country. Or anyone with a brain for that matter.
The
@CDCofBC
#DBH
approach of telling people to “be prudent” in holiday gatherings while denying them rapid tests is equivalent to telling people to rely on cycle tracking for birth control because they cannot be trusted to put on a condom properly.
#FreeTheRATs
Just so it is clear:
- There is no way to get a COVID-19 vaccine anywhere in the vicinity of UBC.
- The only way to get tested for COVID-19 if symptomatic at UBC is to go to the ER of UBC Hospital.
- There is no data on prevalence or transmission of COVID-19 on campus.
"We have shown, multiple, multiple times, that what happens in schools reflects what's happened in the community."
When Bonnie Henry says "we have shown" she means "I have repeated a falsehood so many times that you should take it as truth already."
British Columbia also believes contact tracing is pointless, no one "needs" a test, cloth masks are fine, children don't get sick, covid is not airborne, unicorns are real, and its citizens were born yesterday.
#UofT
will require all those intending to be on campus be fully vaccinated – as vaccines have proven to be one of the most effective ways to minimize the dangers of

For us to feel “we’re in this together” we need leadership that brings us together, shows respect & trust for people, & is willing to acknowledge mistakes are inevitable, but that they can be corrected. Humility, compassion, and empathy are needed right now. 1/

We’re back to the heady days of “you should wear a mask but we won’t make them mandatory”. That didn’t work in October and it won’t work now. But why learn from experience when you can double down on bad ideas?
#DBH
says she wants to get out of the order business. I have a really good idea of how she could accomplish that.
#ResignBonnie
#firebonnie

Also, thank goodness we are focusing on really important matters, like the Canucks. Schools can wait.
BC has found the formula to defeat Covid. If you don’t test for it, you don’t have it. If you don’t have it, you can’t spread it. If you can’t spread it, you don’t need to isolate. Genius! And to think it was staring us in the face all along…
#bcpolinsanity
NEW: BCers who haven't been tested for COVID but have symptoms can now go back to work/life whenever they feel better
The health minister is defending new instructions quietly posted on the
@CDCofBC
& health authority websites
@CTVVancouver
#bcpoli
NS: 38 cases -> no travel in/out of Halifax, schools online in Halifax, masks mandatory for *ALL* students elsewhere, no gatherings > 5 people.
BC: 1,000+ cases / day, signs go up at the Alberta border. Schools in person, no masks under grade 4. And we ask people to be nice.
In a striking development, Ontario's PHO acknowledges that dropping mask mandates has caused a new wave, children are likely to get very sick, and masks should come back. Meanwhile
@CDCofBC
obfuscates hospitalization data and
@VCHhealthcare
officials engage in twitter fights.
1/n PHO has a new risk assessment on the spread of the current BA. 2 wave.
Among other things it says:
- The wave is associated with lifting mask mandates
- We're likely to see ++ serious illness in children
- Reintroducing masking would be an effective + practical intervention
B.C. government has provided
#COVID19
case counts for the last three days:
- Dec. 24-25: 2,552 new cases
- Dec. 25-26: 2,023 new cases
- Dec. 26-27: 1,713 new cases
but there's no details on hospitalizations, active cases, or testing, so no real point in analyzing or charts
Right on cue, the day before 8-year old is due to be vaccinated, there is an exposure at her school. Those kids could have been vaccinated over a week ago, but doses had to sit in a freezer so
#DBH
and health officials could get photo-ops with their kids first.
#bcpoli
British Columbia, where you cannot get tested unless you are -GET THIS- an unvaccinated adult.
And to think bioethicists are grappling with the question of whether the unvaccinated should be denied care. In BC, it's the vaccinated that are denied care!
@LisaJ456
It doesn't actually look like older adults are eligible for testing unless they meet other criteria, like living in congregate settings. These are the current testing recommendations from the BC CDC.
It's pretty boggling.

cases, with health workers reassigned between areas and surgeries delayed. And BC universities defer to her on campus safety policies.
BC has one of the lowest COVID-19 mortality rates in the world, despite middling infection rates. Public Health has consistently boasted of this "success". The most likely explanation for it, however, is that they attributed COVID deaths to other causes. Sickening to the bone.
Have BC's COVID cases & deaths really been that much lower than QC, or have they been looking harder?
That's one of the big questions arising from a bombshell report by
@MoriartyLab
et al, who believe the death toll could be DOUBLE.

@CTVVancouver
#bcpoli
The correct adjective is criminal, not stupid. Rapid mass infection of school children was engineered from the top quite transparently in BC. It was not even about masks: uncontroversial interventions like air purifiers were explicitly forbidden in the name of "equity".
I find it very troubling to think that there may have been Canadian public health officials stupid enough to believe that intentionally infecting school children with SARS-2 en masse would end, rather than worsen, a public health crisis.
It's heartbreaking to see the public appeals from parents whose children's urgent surgeries have been canceled because the public healthcare system can't cope. BC is now doing worse than many countries with fewer resources in terms of timely access to care.
@GlobalHigherEd
@marktmaclean
All 4 candidates were interviewed on the same day, taken to dinner, and seated next to each other. We were told one of us would get the nod during dinner via a tap on the back. Thought it was a joke. It wasn’t (and it wasn’t me).
After two years of aiding and abetting unsafe school environments that made both students and their own members sick,
@bctf
is finally changing its tune (and trying to rewrite history a bit). That’s how outrageous Dr. Henry’s ethical violations are. Better late than never, BCTF.
I’m thankful this article was written as it confirms what teachers have known all along about school transmissions of
#Covid
and that unwillingness of Drs at the BCCDC to honestly report what was happening. 1/8
#bced
Third question on why BC is waiting a full week longer than other provinces to start vaccinating children. Dr. Henry now trying the "we are delaying to be more efficient line". It would save everybody's time if she just truthfully replied "because we just don't care that much".
Imagine cracking down on service dogs as violations of infection control policies while ordering workers that have tested positive for COVID back to work in hospitals. That's
@VanIslandHealth
for you.
Chart of the day.
@CDCofBC
continues to maintain that schools (where K-3 are unmasked) are not a significant source of transmission. Clearly those 5-8 and 9-11 are partying hard after school and ruining it for the rest of us.
@adriandix
No, there are certainly way more than 442 cases of COVID-19 in BC since yesterday. 442 is the small fraction detected by the public testing system, which is off-limits to the general public.
Over the past two weeks,
@UBC
held a series of "listening" town halls to gather concerns from faculty and staff about the return to campus in September. Today it posted its gasl... er, "response".
IMPORTANT INFO for
@UBC
students that have tested positive and want their classmates and professors to be aware of a potential exposure.
@VCHhealthcare
will most likely not inform them.
You can ensure they know, but you have to do the legwork yourself. Here's how.
Doubling down on their BS,
@PHSAofBC
would like you to know that the insane wait times at BC Children's are because they implemented a new electronic health records system. That was in February. It obviously explains why wait times skyrocketed this week.
Love how BC COVID pressers routinely call on
@richardzussman
first; he gets about 6 softball questions in with his "one question and follow up", which in turn take up about half the Q&A time. They've got a good thing going there.
In BC, if your second COVID infection kills you, you didn’t die “from Covid” or “with Covid”. You died from something else. Maybe you didn’t die at all, so you can continue to vote
@bcndp
.
@SusanDavidsonM2
@JaneWin18032569
@bad_batch_rex
@corman_irene
Even more disconcerting, it seems that reinfections are not considered in the death toll in BC: "deaths are any COVID-19 lab positive cases who died from any cause recorded in Vital Statistics within 30 days of their first positive lab result date" [first excludes reinfections]
The Provincial Health Officer of British Columbia is now the butt of jokes of aerosol scientists. Great show. But make no mistake: the joke is on all of us, and it’ is a deadly one. Resign, Dr. Henry. Go already.
BREAKING: Dr. Bonnie Henry, Top Public Health Official of BC, Canada (

She is right! Scientists have pointed an electron microscope to the

Gotta love that the Davos WEF uses PCR testing, air filtration, and far-UV germicidal light to protect attendees, but
@adriandix
and DBH tell us that schools and universities are perfectly safe without.
The world's elite at the Davos forum are enjoying every possible protection from Covid, including PCR testing, air filtration, UVGI light.
Why isn't this being offered to everyone else?
Every school, every workplace should have the same protections as the rich and powerful.
This will totally not happen in BC. In fact, it is not happening already among UBC students, who are totally not missing class in large numbers because of not getting sick with COVID, for which they are not testing positive.

Liberals say common people should shut up and do what the “experts” tell them.
Here’s the thing: the common people are the experts.
Don’t believe me? Listen 👇
In the real world, no one could decide to entirely stop doing their job and still collect a paycheck every month. No, not even a tenured professor like me. Yet that's exactly what
@adriandix
,
#DBH
, and the sorry lot at
@CDCofBC
and
@VCHHealthcare
have done. Just walk away.
And then the worst part, they did fuck all for vulnerable people. Fuck. All. They are putting everybody together in hospitals now COVID+ or -. HCWs aren’t wearing respirators.
What are they doing for at risk children in the school system? 17/
Brain inflammation akin to that caused by chemotherapy and cognitive effects that parallel dementia really scream “let’s make sure as many people as possible -especially children- catch this virus now.”
Your periodic reminder that:
- When an unvaccinated person at
@UBC
refuses to submit a "mandatory" declaration, no action is being taken.
- There is no way for symptomatic persons to get tested within 50 minutes of campus by public transit.
Since Public Health will not give out centralized information on
@UBC
covid prevalence,
@ubccovidtracker
is a place to report any exposures you know of and keep abreast any new incidents. Not scientific, of course, but science isn't very much en vogue these days.
Two final observations:
- Our health minister
@adriandix
is in a CEV category. How convenient.
- Ourprovincialhelathofficerdrbonniehenry wisely kept her name out of the study this time. Though you can be sure it was her who waived the ethics review.
That
@VCHhealthcare
*STILL* does not operate a testing site on campus is unconscionable. That
@UBC
happily touts absence of evidence as evidence of absence... too.
Looks like we are going to go down to the wire once more while
@UBC
ponders whether to bring back a mask mandate at the peak of an immune-evading variant wave.
In
#BC
the PHO stated in a press conference that school closures *increase* COVID-19 transmission. This fantastical, anti-scientific thinking is not funny any more; it’s downright costing lives.

As noted now, repeatedly, school closure has one of the largest impacts on reducing reproduction number, among all interventions available to us.

One week behind the rest of Canada. No vaccine invitations being sent out. Some appointments given at random over the phone. A complete clusterfuck. Par for the course two years into this. What does a top ranking civil servant have to do to get fired in this province?
Let's see if BC is a place of laws. Secrecy has no place in a democratic society, especially when it concerns the health and safety of the population.
Volunteers file 60 access to information requests for all 60 BC K-12 public school districts.
