RIP. Indeed, an absolute giant. I saw him many times at MIT, but I never had the courage to approach him and tell him how much I admired his work. A few years ago, I was shocked to receive detailed comments on an old paper of mine he had somehow come across... (1/2)

For some time, I've been worrying that a return to normality would take much longer than many expect. Now I know that things will never go back to normal. My friend and intellectual hero, with whom I shared an office wall, is gone. No words can express my sorrow. RIP Emmanuel.

Related to my last RT, I have refrained from publicly commenting on the prosecution of Catalan politicians and civil society leaders that has taken place in Spain recently. The reason for this is that the trials bunched together folks with distinct levels of culpability (1/8)

One of the first papers I ever wrote, when I was an aspiring macroeconomist, was on capital-labor substitution. It was a term paper for Metrics and J. Hausman didn’t think much of it (got a B, I think). It is now one of my most cited papers and its results appear to hold up! 👇🏼👇🏼

Congratulations to Andreu Mas Colell for his honorary degree at the University of Chicago. Last economist honored was Bob Wilson... in 1995!

One of my first games at Camp Nou was in June 1982, Argentina vs. Belgium in the inaugural game of the World Cup. Maradona had just signed for @FCBarcelona . The next two years, I walked past his house every day on my way to school, always trying to catch a glimpse of him. RIP😥

I think, most of all, I will miss Alberto's quickly-typed emails. So full of typos that he might as well have typed them with his feet. I was just going over a few of them and it brought me to tears.

@genemgrossman In the same spirit, we should be less shy about telling folks how much we're inspired by their work and how much we appreciate their mentoring. Thank you, Gene: I'm eternally grateful for everything you've done for me, and especially for being so encouraging early in my career.

I get that penalty shootouts have their own appeal, but has FIFA/UEFA ever considered dropping one or two players per side during overtime, as in ice hockey? Seems it would be equally entertaining/thrilling but substantially fairer... (to be clear, today's outcome seemed fair!).

I am fortunate to continue to have amazing advisees, but many of them have worked on (or are working on) topics closer to our sister field of Spatial Economics. This is a more general trend. Data from Jonathan Dingel’s @TradeDiversion blog is quite telling:

Andreu Mas-Colell had retired well before the events that motivated those early prosecutions. I suspect that, in no small part, he retired because he did not support the radical turn his political party had taken, which now advocated a unilateral declaration of independence (4/8)

To be clear, I strongly favor more stimulus. But it seems to be helping the wrong people (e.g., me). And I am puzzled the market is not anticipating significant tax increases on capital income under a Democratic senate. I’d love to hear other perspectives! #EconTwitter (2/2)

Very sorry to hear about Ron Findlay's passing. I had the privilege of interacting with him on several occasions at Columbia. He had a razor-sharp mind. And he was incredibly erudite, as is evident in his monumental "Power and Plenty" with @kevinhorourke . RIP.

Sad to hear one my mentors, the great Ron Findlay passed away in his sleep. One of the biggest intellectual influences on me. One of the smartest people I have known & a kind person. The silver lining is that he died in  his sleep.  The best way to die.
