📚 A treasure trove of 50,000 handwritten records which I digitize with OCR (own pipeline) 🧐 1- Pre-abolition county enslaved mortality 2- 1848: all newly freed individuals (N=110,000) 3- 1852-1856: all who became parents (N=18,000 children).

❓Why? 🧐Suggestive evidence that fathers exposed to the worst conditions could be more violent 👉Mothers seem to have adapted their partnership decisions: 50% more likely to partner with men exposed to different conditions during slavery

Should we worry about selection into crop types? ❓Enslaved workers attached to sugarcane could be stronger on sugarcane, as work was harder 📚But it is not what historians have found so far

And after slavery ended? 👉50% of parents moved. 70% are field workers. 🔍Strategy: Compare families based on parents' violence exposure in former county of enslavement With more sugarcane intensity 🟰 more violence

🧩 Empirical challenge: Identify individuals' former enslavement conditions! ⚖️Unique institutional feature: unique surnames (anagrams, bird names..) that can be linked to a specific place of enslavement 📃Unique data: primary archives on universe of enslaved and descendants

💡Main finding: 🚨Families where fathers were exposed to the most violent conditions are 40% more likely to experience child death after 1848 👉Result holds across locations, occupations of parents, maternal characteristics 🚨Null effect for mothers

📍Setting: French Caribbean Islands of #Guadeloupe & #Martinique . #Slavery abolished in 1848. Focus on immediate descendants of formerly enslaved between 1852 and 1856 County-variation in crop type <-> variation in conditions, worse on sugarcane (➕workload and violence)

💡Before Abolition: Violence during slavery responded to economic incentives 💰 🪓Both structural (work harder on sugarcane vs coffee) 📈and cyclical: ⬆️competition driven by beet sugar production -> ⬆️ in workload through coercion in sugarcane intensive areas
