Age 17-27: Learned a lot, saved a lot & found the right partner.
- Enlisted grunt in US Army at age 17.
- Parent worked at the University & I got free tuition. The Army also paid for school. This resulted in getting paid 100% tuition for full undergrad. Big win.

Toothbrushes are gross.
We would never use the same fork or spoon every day without washing it with soap.
Yet, we have no problem shoving the same toothbrush in our mouths for months on end.
Someone invent a better way.

I’ve heard that you have to boil distilled water first and then freeze to get perfectly clear ice. Next level gets into branded symbols in the cubes. Love this side hustle. 🔥 🧊
5 Years Ago
My business did not have an org chart.
Everyone did a bit of everything.
It was “our culture.”
We were small, proud and very disorganized.
…
We’ve changed.
It didn’t happen overnight.
It was a slow, intentional process towards structure.
Towards systems.
When starting a small business:
You need to execute on one good idea, over a long period of time.
Here’s the problem:
People who think of good ideas, often think of too many ideas.
They fall in love with the natural high of chasing it, not the action of building it.
When it
My first job out of college was in a tough work environment.
After about 8 months, I had an interview at a new company.
The interview was going great until their last question:
“How did you get time off from your current job to make it to this interview?”
It caught me
A new idea is a business owner’s enemy.
It walks around in your brain, voraciously consuming your time and attention.
Meanwhile, your currently successful idea quietly awaits your return.
Let’s talk about sunglasses.
We sold $102,200.27 of them in my last report.
About ~73k of that is profit.
3,475 pairs, spread between 25 variants— all without running a single advertisement on them.
1,856 different people paid an average of ~$29 per pair… I guess quite a few
Reasons to expect a raise:
1. You solve problems, not just identify them.
2. Your work and presence make the team better.
3. You care and plug holes without being asked.
4. You take care of yourself (physically, mentally, spiritually) and contribute to a positive work
Start a business on 2-week paternity leave?
I started Paddle North during my two-week paternity. My wife was supportive (looking back, that’s miraculous in itself).
Today, we’re a team of 20+ spread throughout the Midwest.

On starting a small biz:
You have to start moving before knowing the destination.
That’s uncomfortable for a lot of people.
Here’s how that looked for me:
I sold 10 paddle boards before even making one.
I drafted a board concept, wrote a story and posted on Craigslist.

I’m at an event.
An 11-year old walks up, dressed in an inflatable cow costume. (It’s a trade show in Novi, Michigan).
He offers me a sample of chocolate filled espresso beans.
Continues to tell me about his parents business… and sells me two bags.
This kid is going places.
178 days ago, I adjusted my work schedule to include three different shifts:
Shift 1: Daily Alone Time.
I realized that I rarely had time alone to do focused work. I was always with my colleagues or my family. I found myself often getting lunch alone, just because my mind
Niche Markets.
We make paddle boards.
The widest, most meaty, part of the market is a 35-55 y/o woman.
The surface level strategy would be to focus here.
When we entered the space in 2014, it was dominated by coastal brands doing just that. If I wanted a board, as a guy in
@jcolesimpson
Love the hustle!
My two cents: Variety & uniqueness each week isn’t a strong selling proposition for me. I’d prefer consistent quality of the same thing.
We contract manufacture products in China.
Why?
Yes, cost-effectiveness.
But also so much more.
Chinese manufacturers also win on speed AND quality.
Yes, their default state and first quote is to manufacture at the lowest possible cost at the sacrifice of quality. (Hint:
E-Sports.
It’s a thing.
Walked into this building at University of Redlands and about a dozen gamers were playing/streaming.
A receptionist went on to explain what teams they have and how some players get scholarships to play for the university team.

Monday reminder for small business owners who are still in the grind:
The road to more success is filled with potholes disguised as new business ideas.
When we experience success with one idea, more new business ideas will naturally flood in.
But more ideas isn’t what’s
Building a brand is a slow grind.
Focus on authentic consistency over time, laying the foundation brick by brick across as many customer touchpoints as you can.

Don’t go into the convo prepared for battle, go in with a learners mind. Stay calm & explain you’re just a guy running a business & you’re on phone to learn what went sideways in the misunderstanding.
I hit a mental block at about 2:30 PM today.
Every task seemed daunting, and my brain was sluggish…
At 3 PM, I ditched the desk and took a 10-15 minute brisk walk outside.
From 3:15 to 5 PM, I got back into the flow of good work.
Don’t underestimate the power of fresh air
Big businesses spend so much money and effort trying to appear smaller than they are.
Small business owners:
Recognize the value of your small size and put more effort emphasizing this. It’s your secret weapon.
Start them young.
At 16, my dad bought a truck and a dumpster. We started a dump biz that died in under 2 years (but I learned a lot). Fast forward: here’s my son at age 9 running the cash register at our booth. Collecting cash and placing orders in Shopify POS.
Last night, I dreamed of an Apple Watch face widget that doesn’t show the actual time, but shows how much time is left in the day.
Would be a new lens of viewing the days time resource and a fun change of pace for how the day is viewed.
…Does this exist?
THE YEAR WE CLOSED THE MALL
STORES.
From 2016 to 2023, we operated retail stores in four different shopping centers.
What we learned:
- Malls are hard to staff.
- Hard to stock and track inventory.
- They cost a lot of $.
But they also have real traffic, malls are far
I love the unassuming small business success hidden in plain sight. The contracted “Janitor” at my gym works extremely hard and ALWAYS has a smile on his face. Today I asked him if he owns this cleaning company. He said yes, he started it 13 years ago and has 10 employees. Cleans
@LeadershipAcad1
I was prepared to say I’m 10 years in at 50/50 and it’s going really well. But then your no mommy/daddy issues comment hit hard.
👀
that’s amazing you landed on a solution, haven’t heard that path of buying some of the stake to change the 50/50
Navigating Apparel Production: From Outsourcing to Owning the Process
Level 1: Outsourcing Production and Printing on Generic Items (Bella Canvas, District, Alternative Apparel, etc.)
At this initial stage, our focus was on establishing our brand and testing the market.
@FitFounder
It’s been 20 years and I still hear the Drill Sergeants yelling to drink water.
When we were tired.
When we did something bad.
When we did something good.
When we made mistakes.
When we felt sick.
When we felt great.
…didn’t matter the occasion. Drinking water was the answer.
"I love your brand."
Those words are earned, by providing excellence over an extended period of time.
A brand is defined in the tough moments. The moments when things go sideways.
The best way to build a lovable brand happens when a customer approaches, dissatisfied.

Boredom kills a lot of good businesses.
When it comes for yours:

2. Set targets and gamify the daily grind.
3. Double down on efficiency, processes and people…. And the metrics to measure them.

I’ve found writing stories to be useful in lieu of a biz plan. start with a brand story— trying to establish the vibe & get the heart beating for the idea. I include visuals and I do mess in google sheets to project some $$$ concepts.
Now at age 38, I’m even more in love with my wife (almost 15 years now!). My boys are growing fast (9 & 5). The four of us might be the most die hard Minnesota Vikings fans that you’ll ever meet… it builds fortitude.

Gordy Soltau. My grandmas cousin led the NFL in scoring in 1952 & 1953. He was a kicker… and apparently a tight end?
He ended his career after nine seasons with the 49ers.

Living a content life is something I’ve been thinking about this year.
Here’s my working definition of how that looks:
To exist in a space of self growth, while making peace with the daily work, struggles and time it takes.
A lot of days, this works. It’s easy to understand
Met up with a buddy.
He built a business for 7 years, covid crashed it.
Got a high paying 9-5 job, had three kids.
Feels unfulfilled, wants his own biz again but believes he’s now outside that stage of life (35 y/o).
What advice would you give him?
@jcolesimpson
Sometimes a vacation is exactly what is needed to enter the next stage of growth. An intentional pause and refocus.. took me a while to realize this.
Just a Wednesday:
5:00 AM: 5 year old crawls in my bed— we both fall back asleep.
5:55 AM: Alarm goes off. Wife is already up and showered. I make coffee & start planning day. Down water, vitamins & ag1.
7:00 AM: 9 year old wakes up sick and stays home from school. He starts

In my experience there are two primary types of ppl interviewing for entry/mid level sales positions:
1) those that truly love sales.
&
2) those that don’t know what else to do.
If you ask them which they are, they will usually tell you (verbally or not).
@STLChrisH
I never knew looking at job titles could be so fun, but the way your framed it is. 🎯
Are any of these remote positions? Or all in an office building?
Are any of these titles/roles combined together in one person ? I.e. our fleet manager is also our warehouse manager.
