Global supply chains have become new economic weapons for great powers. In this article with @mevers90 , we develop a structural theory of business-state relations and show how power transitions affect a state's ability to exercise economic statecraft 1/n

In July 2021, morale was high and citizens endorsed the leadership. A year later, China is in crisis and the state is cornered. Why did the state fail to adjust its Covid policy in time? 1) The desire to preserve the international image; 2) domestic information constraints. 1

tbh, any time I praise China, I add “although” afraid of being seen as a CCP propagandist; any time I criticize China, I add “but”, worrying it'd add fuel to the already hyped-up red scare. That’s something Chinese scholars in the US will have to face for the years to come.

Agree with the implications of the finding. But I am surprised to find for women with young children, the covid only decreases research time by1.5 hours per day? Really? That's how long I get my child to sit on the dinner table. When daycare is closed, 8 hours is lost, no?

Compared to childless academic men, since the start of the pandemic, women with children have lost over 500 hours of research time. Even compared to men with children they've lost 150-200 hours of research. As for single parents, I'd dread to see the data.

@FilipeCampante In China it's similar. Used to be a fancy thing that young people go to. Later become kids-orientated. But was not associated with poor people at all. Part of the reason is McDonald uses different recipes in China catering to Asians so they taste good...
