When countless brave Chinese people (of different ethnicities) took to the street, instead of showing solidarity one proposes counterfactual. And FYI, Shanghai protesters broadcasted Uyghur songs during the memorial today.

A thoughtful&resonating essay on racial solidarity. Brown's alleged treatment of Prof. Shibusawa feels painfully familiar: many of these Ivy League universities, instead of promoting and protecting women and WOC faculty and students, usually sideline and sometimes silence them.

I encourage people to follow the case of historian Naoko Shibusawa, suspended from the job and stripped of faculty rights at Brown for publishing what was deemed a controversial essay on racial solidarity: . The NYU AAUP sent a letter supporting Shibusawa.

Goodbye China — for now. My time here is ending after 24 years. I am filled with sadness at leaving, and gratitude for family and friends who have made this country my life as well as my work. I look forward to resuming reporting soon, and also to the day when we can return.

Fascinating conversation about US-China relations. The way Ezra raised his concern is quite telling, and sums up the sad reality:

I asked my parents to send me to 新东方 twice because (i) the teachers were highly entertaining (ii) i made good friends and got to stay in Beijing in the summer (iii) it was super effective in test prepping. Inequality is certainly a problem bc some families may not afford it.

This go-to position is intellectually/professionally lazy and politically correct. Journalists and commentators could have easily interviewed students who went through these programs and easily got a sense of the curriculum.

Before this could happen, a few of my mainland colleagues who are professors in HK are looking for jobs elsewhere bc they feel unsafe at work, fearing not the police but their *own students*. Not sure what protesters are doing really helps defend academic institutions&liberty

Initially the young protester's bigotry towards mainlanders was offputting, but by the end I was in tears. Perhaps unintentionally protesters are risking destroying their own beautiful city for the benefit of many other Chinese who do not yet share the same values. Well-done TAL!

Lots of dangerous parallels: LM Yan can be a curveball, Jon Stewart just pulled a Hitchens, and Michael R. Gordon falsely claimed about aluminum tubes with Judy Miller in NYT coauthored the recent unsubstantiated WSJ piece pushing for the lab leak theory.

Everyone pushing lab leak allegations should listen to @NoreenMalone 's Slow Burn on the Iraq War. Seeding information-free allegations, using credulous reporters, reputation burnishing by those involved in a failure. It is so familiar. And it's an outstanding listen.

Private firms sometimes seek state (and affiliated) funding for a variety of reasons. Jack Ma & Ant Financial, e.g., proactively sought funding from the National Council for Social Security Fund in 2014 rather than the other way around.

Hey remember in 2017 when Ant tried to get U.S. approval to buy MoneyGram and published a letter in WSJ saying: "while a handful of Chinese state-owned or -affiliated funds own non-controlling minority stakes, they do not participate in company management”
