My advice to grad students - learn to spot people like this, so you can avoid them the rest of your career. You’ll be happier and more successful without this type of toxicity in your life. Warning: Shockingly bad career advice below

Grad Students: Networking is critical for success in academia. But the real question is WHO to network with. I’ve known grad students who will spend time at conferences drinking beers in the bars with grad students from unranked programs. Is that 1/

I quit as a Frontiers editor and refuse to review papers for them because of how difficult the journal makes rejecting a paper. You essentially can’t, you can only get stuck in endless reviewing loops. Still shame on everyone involved, but this is what the Frontiers system allows

Question for immunologists with an evolutionary bent. Why would fever have evolved? The magnitude is likely to be too mild for a direct anti-microbial effect, and as a signal mediator it is horribly dangerous compared to small molecule mediators

Why I hate hobbies on CVs 1. They are unnecessary. It is a job, not a relationship. It honestly shouldn't have any impact at all on hiring decisions. 2. It is class-coding. You are from Australia and trained in tennis, horse-riding and violin, I get it, you are from money.

Standard grants should be 5 years. Tenure track should be 7 years. Expectations have gone up so much, lower is just unrealistic. Short grant cycles are bad for science, and bad for scientists, just increasing the pressure and tension while reducing creativity and reproducibility

I'm not saying anyone should do this. But if they are planning on it anyway, please freeze a series of PBMCs and serum samples.
