Budgets do not tell the whole story; expenditures matter as well. For the past two fiscal years, @berkeleypolice overspent their Council-approved overtime budgets (of ~$2.3 million) by an average of ~$3.7 million dollars, a 160% overrun from the budgeted amount.

That's why @CityofBerkeley banned tear gas outright.

Despite a Council majority recently ranking climate and equity action (via a secret ballot) among the least important priorities for the next budget process (I strongly disagreed) I believe that #climateisnumberone .

According to a recent survey, Berkeley voters already favor providing free transit passes: 34% think it is extremely important; 33% think it is very important; and 24% think it is somewhat important. Total = ~90%! Free transit is key to meeting our climate & equity goals.

Combustion of natural gas in buildings accounted for 27% of total GHG emissions in Berkeley and 10% of all GHGs in California. This does not account for the significant emissions associated with methane leaks across the entire gas supply chain from fracking well to your home.

The science is super clear: dramatically cut methane from our buildings and diets with less than a decade to go. CH4 leakage across natural gas supply chain makes gas the largest source of @CityofBerkeley 's traditional GHG inventory many times over #CutMethane #ActOnClimate
BREAKING: A powerful new report from the IPCC outlines the urgent action needed to reduce warming emissions. One of the most important steps we can take: #CutMethane . A rapid, full-scale effort to reduce methane pollution could slow the rate of warming by as much as 30%.

I was pleased to sign this letter! Thanks @SFBaySierraClub @SierraClub et al. SB 1393 would require a host of additional findings placing an undue burden on local jurisdictions who are exercising their rights to safeguard their constituents from the harms of fossil fuels #methane

20 years after it is release, methane has a global warming potential of 84 times that of carbon dioxide! @EnvDefenseFund estimated that “[a]bout 25% of the manmade global warming we're experiencing is caused by methane emissions.”

Wildfires and warmer weather — both products of climate change — merged to make the Bay Area one of the most smoke- and smog-choked metropolitan areas in the nation in recent years.
