“students are pollution” “students are too loud” okay but have you considered not living next to a large public university that’s been around since 1868?
BREAKING: Massive protest is taking place at UC Berkeley’s graduation. Started with small groups of protestors holding Palestinian flags, but has quickly grown to hundreds. This section is just the protestors.
a $20 million bond for affordable housing in the bay area was pulled from the ballot because some anti-tax conservatives were prepared to outspend us.
i’m heartbroken. this news is devastating for our communities.
Let me be so incredibly clear: I am unequivocally opposed to police aggression directed at nonviolent protesters, and I condemn the University’s actions in Southside today.
I have made that clear to University administrators, as well as to City of Berkeley leadership.

“They said that it would be different that that would not happen again, that those were extraordinary circumstances. And less than six months later here we are again,”
@cecilialunap
said. “I am infuriated.”
this is vile. this decision *is* a huge deal and *terrible* news — it will inevitably lead to cities worsening their criminalization of unhoused people.
how does it feel to side with the fascists on the court, Supervisor Mandelman?
This decision is a big deal and good news for cities and counties in CA and throughout the 9th Circuit’s jurisdiction. Street homelessness is a complicated policy challenge, with a host of contributing factors.
@ValerieRoss14
bro why on earth would one live in southside berkeley if their ideal is a quiet neighborhood??? preventing housing density in southside causes spillover effects, displacing or ***disturbing*** berkeley residents in other neighborhoods.
the public process continues to over-prioritize older, whiter, wealthier residents. how do you expect to get engagement from your young constituents when the system is designed to deliberately exclude them??
Reflecting on Tuesday's Berkeley City Council meeting when tons of people came to denounce disgusting police misconduct and got no chance to do so: delaying the item everyone is there to speak on for *four hours* just to table it makes it so much harder to engage students.
At the urging of my community, I’m strongly considering for City Council! District 7 deserves a bold leader who fully listens to the needs of our community and continues the radical history of Berkeley’s Southside neighborhood.
@SFBART
I can’t imagine one person who would want to buy Bart merch 🙄 how bout you take the money you spend making merch and upgrade the infrastructure

i am unapologetically pro-palestine and pro-ceasefire.
that does not, and should not, come in conflict with being unapologetically against antisemitism. we must always condemn bigotry. hate has no place in our movement for liberation.
heckling holocaust survivors is never okay.
some thoughts of mine: i’m getting increasingly frustrated with the way people coat deeply reactionary positions and, more importantly, policies in fluffy “progressive” language (🧵). it looks and sounds great, uses inclusionary language, acknowledges historical injustice, (1/6)
happy 22nd birthday to the PATRIOT act 😔😮💨
for our shared birthday, we ask for you to please donate to the palestinian children’s relief fund (pcrf) for gazan medical relief:
inshallah the pcrf will be able to enter gaza soon 🇵🇸
today was my last official day as
@caldems
president. it has been such an honor leading such an incredible organization, collaborating with such incredible people, and getting to do such incredible work. i am so deeply and incredibly grateful for all this org has given me.

bro you realize you’re going on nothing right. you have no real information to provide. 80% of my friends are 20 year old “woke POCs” and idk anyone who went to private school. which i know also doesn’t mean much because that’s … not … data
1/ I have some exciting news! I’m stepping into the political arena for a cause very close to my heart:
I’m running for
@SFBART
Board of Directors, to represent riders who use the Berkeley, El Cerrito and Richmond stations 🚆
I’ve never seen myself as a politician, but…
been waking up every day to figure out which one of my friends has been brutalized by their own universities. this is deeply traumatic.
solidarity with UCLA students and solidarity with gaza. free palestine.

Today, we officially submitted 3,876 signatures to the City Clerk, 1,000 over the minimum number to qualify. We are confident now that the Berkeley Safe Streets Campaign will qualify for the November ballot. We are proud to say we did this with volunteer signature gatherers!
@RashiKesarwani
the term “silent majority” is reminiscent of Nixon’s pro-Vietnam War and, later, Trump’s anti-BLM stances — both which served to oppose left leaning movements and stifle legitimate dissent.
i’m with you on the homes at all income levels and street safety, but come on…
@PeterRobicheaux
i’m so down but this is a sfh residential street in burlingame, ca so that’s not happening. also this house literally has a garage already.
in the darkest of times, our community has found ways to embrace joy while working toward liberation. here’s to revolutionary love: today, tomorrow, and forevermore. happy pride everyone !!
now, they do again (post 9/11 style) *as long as you pretend its for progressive reasons*. as long as the police chief has a minority identity, as long as homeowners of color are asking for it, etc. etc. etc. you can screw over marginalized communities in any way you want. (5/6)
but is also super prevalent in housing, tenant justice, workers rights, safe infrastructure, etc. the woke-ification of landlord exploitation, car-centricity, and displacement mechanisms is incredibly painful, and i have very quickly lost my patience for it. (3/6)
At today's staff meeting, we welcomed Cecilia (
@cecilialunap
) Lunaparra to the team as our new Planning + Research Intern. I'm sure California cities and counties are just as excited as we are!! ✌🏽
i predict historians will look back at right now the way they do the 1970s (albeit extremely expedited due to many things, and on a smaller scale) — a reactionary response to revolutionary, counter-culture Black & queer-led movements — with an added rainbow backdrop. (6/6)
even claims to address it — all while further entrenching systemic inequalities. i feel like i see this more than anything in policing (btw - no, advocating/voting for more resources for your local police department isn’t a progressive stance, no matter how you phrase it) (2/6)

i call on my councilmember

to join CM harrison in asking for a commitment from the UC.
Yesterday I wrote

rules concerning use of “less-lethal” weapons & tactics—including but not limited to tear gas, pepper spray, smoke, LRAD, batons etc
BREAKING: Documents with classified markings were discovered in former Vice President Mike Pence’s Indiana home, according to his attorney. Pence’s lawyer, Greg Jacob, told the National Archives in a letter last week.
as someone who spends an excessive amount of time trying to facilitate student engagement in local politics, i am so, so exhausted. we are working against the tide here, all of the time. y’all really do not make this easy.
it is not a crime to be unhoused, and we should never be criminalizing people for *existing*. as local, county, state, and federal governments, the housing crisis is our fault.
i unequivocally condemn this decision, and hope that my fellow local electeds will concur.
thankfully hearing that no one was physically hurt tonight.
sheltering in place and hearing gunshots is traumatic nonetheless. i’m sending love to everyone who experienced this tonight. stay safe and take care of each other. ❤️
UPDATE: Bancroft Way is being cordoned off at College Avenue as police continue to search for suspects. At least one individual was handcuffed near the scene, according to eyewitnesses. Read the breaking story here:
also denser student housing around campus = less students living in other neighborhoods!! less displacement of long-term residents, esp in rent controlled units!
These police departments threatened the use of tear gas and other violent crowd control methods. I personally witnessed and recorded a CHP officer, called in by UCPD, point a “less lethal” weapon at unarmed protesters’ faces. I took the video that this snapshot is from myself.
