Although the US consumer is “currently” in good shape, first time homebuyers are getting massively squeezed on both price and monthly payments. Then add food and energy inflation into the mix. (H/T @SoberLook )

Maybe inflation and a recession are not mutually exclusive? - Does the Fed think about the stickier, less interest rate sensitive components (food, energy)? Can’t print food or hydrocarbons. Also, every 1% rise in rates adds $240 BILLION in int expense to our budget=LT GDP⬇️

On September 20, the GDPNow model estimate for real GDP growth in the third quarter of 2022 is 0.3 percent, down from 0.5 percent on September 15. - moving in the wrong direction

An important chart 👇🏼One of the reasons an economy slows is the velocity of money decreases ( money changing hands) which causes economic activity to slow. The Fed will succeed in their intent to slow the economy.

Based on a number of metrics, banks' overall lending willingness is in contraction, and resembles what tends to happen leading into recessions. Of course, every cycle is different and has its own nuances.

@MarkNewtonCMT Great commentary (as usual). Food for thought: March of 2020, money market assets spiked (historically telling you to buy into the fear). Today money isn’t necessarily coming out of equities, instead, coming out of bank deposits. On average bank deposits yield .40bp vs treasury

Thanks for the shout out my friend @jonnajarian In August ‘21 we wrote “Pixie Dust and Fairy Tales” our thesis on why the IEA’s “Net Zero by 2050” was well intentioned BUT completely unrealistic. Validated our thesis and energy felt like a fat pitch after that.

Informative walk thru history on the intertwined relationship between banks and our government. Great Sunday read from @wesbury ; interesting how much banks earn these days just parking reserves at the Fed🤔
