It's not just letting them sleep on their backs. That alone would not cause this. It's never holding them or giving them tummy time. If a baby spends it's entire day/majority of the day laid down this happens.

You just have to hope it doesn't swallow or inhale any of that water/sand and then give it a rinse or bath after.
