to keep track of things better, i'm organizing all of my tweets about Marc Bloch's "Feudal Society Vol. 1" into this megathread here; i'll still update them the same way, but hopefully this makes it easier to follow; enjoy!
@left_plain
it's the meme where it's like
"orthodox and catholics on god: god is an unknowable, boundless force that mystifies and nurtures us all
protestants on god: yeah i talked to god the other day and he said it's ok i got a dui"
@idkred3
reminds me of when they stopped airing speedy gonzales on cartoon network cuz a bunch of holier than thou gringos said he was offensive, and then latinos campaigned for his return cuz they liked him a lot
california's basically a feudal society consisting of the landowning gentry (boomers), a burgher class (tech workers) that can get by but despises the restrictions placed by the gentry, and a hopeless peasantry (everyone else)
Whenever you see NIMBYโs in a city council meeting and blocking housing, remember theyโre doing it to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from the next buyer of their house. They are freeriders with a decaying asset expecting someone to kiss their feet for the opportunity.
@Calibaneur
there are 3 kinds of wars now: 1. total obliteration followed by decades-long insurgency (if war involves united states); 2. trench warfare (if conventional war); and 3. low-level fragmented civil wars with the same scale of warfare as medieval feuds (if in africa)
@ShitpostRock
you laugh but this is legitimately some shit the chinese would try to do; this is the same society that, when confronted with nomad incursions, built a very big wall that the nomads just went around; there's also this water project that'll be marginally impactful, ultimately
@isilanorien
my dad, the literal median voter, said that he was disappointed that biden didn't run in 2016 and that he would've voted for him instead of trump if that had been the choice
@Calibaneur
there was a good 2-3 year period where the best csgo team in the world was brazilian; hell, a few years a go a different brazilian team almost won the major (but choked massively in front of a home crowd)
@quantian1
i don't like putin, i think he's a terrible person, but i get his need to sperg out about medieval history as someone who's played ck2 before
@LegoRacers2
i still find it crazy that it only ended cuz of the ascension of queen victoria (women couldn't inherit in hanover); like imagine if they changed the laws to allow it; makes german unification much messier
@VanDiemen_
i've often heard that besides native population density differences, spanish intermarriage rates were far higher because the initial waves of conquest were carried out by single men, while the english brought whole families; what do you think of this
also great thread, followed!
@WillTheKid1507
we could try changing these institutions, but that pales in comparison to my ironclad plan of not participating in any institution of power because they're icky
@StatisticUrban
knowing the germans they probably made it needlessly complicated like only letting you grow 1.7 marijuana plants but if your first name is heinrich then you get to grow 3.1, and you can only buy it between the hours of 5 pm and 7 pm on alternating wednesdays
old russian historiography: the tatar mongols occupied us, but we bravely resisted and threw off the tatar yoke and vanquished them in the end!
modern russian historiography:
I just saw this pic from a Russian โmuseumโ: Chinggis khan was actually a Russian by the name of Georgy Danilovich. The place is so wild that the visitors wonder what bureaucrat granted this madmanโs fantasy a status of regional museum.
"In Hong Kong for 20 years you had the triads, corruption, violence, and poverty, but they produced John Woo, Wong Kar Wai, and Bruce Lee. In Singapore they've had brotherly love, they've had 60 years of economic growth and peace, and what did that produce? An F1 race."
@number_pizza111
the closest regimist thing we got was roosevelt changing the name of the hoover dam to the boulder dam (only for it to be renamed after his death)
@PinstripeBungle
internal combustion cars really are victorian machines that work purely on a system of complicated mechanical gadgetry; it's interesting how it's taken us this long to move to the perhaps more simple idea (ie power it with electricity like everything else in the world)
@revhowardarson
i've commented on this before, but he met his wife in london and she would've continued her career in investment banking, but then he became president of syria
bashar's wife (born and raised in britain) was gonna go to harvard and do an mba but had to go to syria cuz her husband became president; the universe did not mean for this people to rule syria
Woah I had no idea Noah Yuval Harari was THIS metal and based af.
> Human rights are just like heaven or God, it's just a fictional story that we've invented and spread around... Take a human, cut him open, look inside... you don't find any rights.
@captgouda24
you have a point; his fine is 1/4th the fine given to the sacklers who basically engineered the opioid crisis that kills tens of thousands every year (and i think the sacklers got a fine that fit the crime, if a little low)
i find it ultimately ironic that this is happening to california, the part of america that, for decades, was most strongly associated with the american dream and starting anew, with freedom and openness, and now it's the most feudalized, stifled part of the country
@HiraethHayseed
@The_Clermontian
can't find it but there was a tweet that was like "if we only allowed latinas and asian women in to the country, white women would form ss brigades over night"
@Paracelsus1092
this has got me to thinking that post-spanish arrival central and south america was probably the closest any human society has gotten to a real apocalypse; 90% dead because of disease, strange people with incomprehensible weapons coming from the ocean; really hard to fathom
@dickcheneyavi
not a tech person but thought about doing data science cuz im a stats major and looking at how things are, maybe i should just become an actuary
@souljagoytellem
it 100% is, which is something lots of people (yanks usually) get wrong about the south: the people there take pride in their reactionism and always have
