Solidarity not charity.
If you got takeaway for £20, 3 times a week without fail, then stopped and saved all that money, it would take 46 years to save the deposit on an average home in Brighton.
Thousands on the streets of Brighton. This is our community, and this goes way beyond the usual crowd of activists. The far right aren't welcome here and we're not moving.
Overwhelmed, exhausted, elated. Peckham, Brook House, Marsham Street, Colnbrook.
Amazing result today. Let's use this momentum.
The Rwanda MoU is yet to be scrapped, and even if/when it is, deportations are ongoing and regular. 1/6
In case anyone missed it; the Green Party has declared the genocide in Gaza a genocide, supports HS2, and has an exciting new network of Leftists organising in the party.
If you're a left-winger who's still in Labour..... Time to reconsider?
Shouldn't we stop with the Mick Lynch t shirts? Seems like a cool guy n all but if we pin a movement on individuals (again) we're
a) embedding hierarchy (and dehumanisation) into collectivism
And b) setting ourselves up for failure
First Brighton
@dontpayuk
meeting wrapped, exciting plans ✌️✊
The cost of living crisis is a scandal that demands government intervention. Bills have to be reduced, and come October we'll be cancelling our direct debits.
Head to to link up with us!!!
Pretty fucking rich for
@TUIUK
to have a float at pride after making millions deporting people, including many LGBT+ folks to places that put their lives in danger. Shameless.
This front page of my local rag
@brightonargus
is completely despicable.
They've uncritically reprinted the propaganda of a far-right racist who went to a hotel in Crawley on Friday to target people seeking asylum. 🧵
Not a fan of GBnews (as is probably clear from the video) but always a fan of speaking up in support of striking staff✊ Solidarity to everyone in
@ucu
at Sussex & beyond. Up the workers!! 💕

People seem to like the first half of this interview, so here's the rest! Thanks
@NEON_UK
for setting up this chance to call out some of the lies from Government and University management. Solidarity

“Staff working conditions, are my learning conditions.
Have you thought about the fact that I have to pay £9250 per year, I have £40k debt and I’m working three jobs just to be able to afford to go to university?”

talking in support of

strike action
Last week
@emb0wdn
and I tried to speak to Rachel Reeves about Labour's climate policies.
@GNDRising
have been trying really hard to engage with the shadow cabinet, but as you can see she's not too keen to talk to us.
We're sorry you feel like accountability is rude, Rachel!
The Rwanda plan is the logical continuation of 10 years of Hostile Environment, and it won't end today, or tomorrow.
We need to keep hitting the streets, keep blocking the roads, keep fighting the cases. 3/6
The University of Brighton is attempting to make over 100 staff redundant, with ~400 at risk. This is a classic case of abject mismanagement.
Senior staff take bloated salaries, waste millions on flashy buildings, and staff and students take the hit.
short🧵on what you can do:
The government doesn't give a shit about us. They let us down on climate, on covid, on cost of living.
All we've got is eachother. They won't divide us with hate, and we will fight back when they try to divide us by force.
Solidarity knows no borders!!!!

Kids at a school in Brighton have written a bunch of letters for the unaccompanied asylum seeking children who are staying here and I think there's some good advice we can all follow
@HeidiBachram
@SussexUni
Hi I'm a Jewish student at Sussex and one of many Jewish staff and students at this camp! There's no threat to Jewish students posed by it, because it's protesting Israeli genocide and has absolutely nothing against Jewish people. Hope this helps your understanding!
The Rwanda scheme is an escalation, but it's nowhere near the extent of Priti Patel's cruelty.
People seeking asylum are routinely denied access to due process, frequently let down and habitually neglected. 2/6
We should have a form of national service where everyone spends 6 months working in hospitality, and 6 months in retail.
Before doing so, you're not allowed to drink in a pub, go for a coffee, or go shopping.
The person who wrote this garbage in the Argus is their trainee reporter,
@lucyhuntjourno
. But for a story of this significance, and the fact it's the front page, it has to be the editor who's to blame.
@Arronjourno
you're a joke of a journalist and you should be ashamed.
As long as the Tories scapegoat members of our communities, we have to fight back.
Solidarity, care, compassion, and community will prevail. When the Home Office attacks, we fight back.4/6
Whilst you're here, there's a student named Muhammad who's being detained in Scotland and could use your solidarity . Please take 30 seconds to sign this petition ❤️
Starmer on Boris Johnson saying ‘fuck business': "I can promise you that the only 'F words' I'll be using are ‘foreign investment’, 'fair trade', 'fiscal policy', and 'fiduciary duty'"
Reminder to anyone who's got a big, tiring week of strike action (or anything else) ahead:
Take a break. Then tidy your room, do the washing, prepare some meals, lay out some treats to pick up at the end of a long day. These things always slip, and it adds to stress and burnout
Wishing for a world in which Jewish bodies in the UK claiming to ''''represent'''' me function as more than lobby groups for a foreign power committing genocide.
Joint statement with the
@JLC_uk
: “We are concerned that the cumulative effect of these announcements, in quick succession, signal a significant shift in policy, away from Israel being a key UK ally. This would not only be a strategic error but a moral one.”
1. I'm also a student in my final year. What's -really- hurting us is a government and employers that want to normalise low pay and poor conditions, whilst stripping services to the bone. Our solidarity must be unconditional.
@ucu
I supported the last strikes, I’m all for striking for fairness, but 18 days is a lot, over half a month, this is my final year and will be crucial for my final grade, and having studied through covid and receiving no leniencies for this, this on top means I won’t achieve my best
When John got in touch, did
@brightonargus
spend 5 minutes checking him out? Speak to anyone else who was in Crawley? Challenge him?
No, they gave him the front page to curate his image and promote his views. The exact views that led to two hotels being set on fire last week.
*Personal/professional news!*
On July 3rd, I'll be starting my job as a full time (sabbatical) officer
@USSU
As well as being one of the 6 officers responsible for the day to day running of the union, my remit will be Sports, Societies and Events officer
It took me five seconds to find John Wallsgrove's social media. Multiple times a day he posts racism, islamophobia, conspiracy theories, Tommy Robinson propaganda and beyond.
The Argus front page; 'I'm a Brexiteer'.
John isn't a 'Brexiteer'; he's a far-right racist.
This man planned, promoted, then spent hours on Friday spewing racist abuse at a hotel housing people seeking asylum.
He then 'contacted The Argus in the hopes of sharing his side of the story,' and they obliged, printing his words with no equivocation or critical engagement.

Occupiers at University of Brighton, protesting staff redundancies, are being threatened with police, disciplinary and injunctive action - punitive response from a uni that cares more about its buildings than its students!!
These are the allegations University of Brighton is making. We want to respond directly, they did not communicate with us directly and instead are communicating through solicitors. We are peaceful and not destructive. We do not aim to commit any damage- Occupiers
The legend that is Torch has pled not guilty to a criminal damage charge.
The real criminals are companies that supply the arms trade, and those that prop them up.
The trial will be on March 11th, save the date, we're going to make some noise.
We're throwing together a solidarity rally at the Sussex picket on Thurs! Last minute but hope to see lots of people there!!

Love and solidarity to everyone in the comments and QTs!! Can't go through and reply to them all but it's so heartening to hear these words were uplifting, proud to be supporting striking workers in UCU and everywhere ✊✊✊
Proud to be standing shoulder to shoulder with thousands of people in Brighton - Jewish, Muslim , whatever - it's the fash and the people amplifying their hate who aren't welcome.
John described what he'd be doing on Friday as 'protection of our borders'. He went to this hotel with the stated intention of taking up the mantle of border violence for himself.
The Argus front page? 'Trouble came to me'.
So proud of this campaign, and the hundreds of people who played a part.
Love and solidarity to all, especially those continually targeted and harassed by the Hostile Environment.
This is a victory, but there's much more to do.
Direct action gets the goods! Onto the next one.
✊CAMPAIGN VICTORY✊
For almost a year, we have been campaigning against
@TUlUK
, aiming to end their role as The Home Office's main deportation partner.
Today, we are pleased to announce the success of this campaign.

Yet another Uni in Brighton attempting to make mass redundancies. Inspiring to see so many students standing up to push back, hopefully management listen to
@SAVEBIMM
Yesterday was fantastic, but the struggle against racism and fascism continues
Tomorrow they're targeting a hotel in Crawley, and it's likely there will be way more fash there than yesterday (low bar admittedly). Be there if you can!!!
EMERGENCY VIGIL - Brighton
Today, at least 30 people lost their lives crossing the channel. Heartbreaking.
This is a political choice. The hostile environment policy is racist and inhumane. It must be resisted.
Gather at 2pm Sat 27th outside Brighton Unitarian Church.

Do you work in a pub, cafe, hotel, coffee shop, bar?
There's a lot going on in the world right now, and one of those things is we're launching the Unite Southeast Hospitality Branch! The region's first hospitality branch 👇
Imagine if instead of a 4 day weekend and massive parade celebrating 70 years of hereditary parasite we had a few days to collectively discuss the fact we're in the midst of climate emergency and people can't afford food 🙄
This evening I glued my hand to the floor of the Oxford Union debating chamber, wearing a t-shirt which said “NO MORE DEAD TRANS KIDS”, in front of Kathleen Stock during her talk at the Union. Here’s why I felt I had to take this action:
I've spent over 2 decades within social movements, specialising in policing, with an interest in collaboration & cooperation between movement actors and police forces.
I've put together some guidance on useful ways to effectively and respectfully interact with police. a 🧵:

@SussexUnison
taking strike action. We're all fighting for a better future for Higher Education ✊ sorry I'm not in Brighton to come to the picket today!!
We're ready on our pickets for 2 days of strike action over pay in Higher Education. With RPI at 10.2% there's only so much workers can continue to absorb. It's time for fair pay.
I genuinely don't understand how some on here can be so against a nonwhite woman with migrant parents overseeing border policy and being Home Secretary
I'm super burnt out and exhausted and need nothing more than to just be home in bed and the fucking bus driver just pulled us over to have a cigarette break and all I can say is I'm happy he gets to have a break and hope his shift is going ok and that he has a nice evening

releases a statement condemning

Proud to be part of an SU that takes important stances like this 💯🔥✊
