(He/Him) “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response…and our freedom” - Victor Frankl
Inspired by a
@SamHarrisOrg
podcast, I created a grid with 52 columns and 90 rows, assuming I'm lucky enough to live till 90 (actuarily reasonable). Each box is a week. Grey is behind me. Other colors suggest my health and ability. Puts things in perspective, wouldn't you say?
I recently shared an experience I had with a journal and was encouraged to share the decision letter more broadly. For the youngens who still get frustrated, this same paper was rejected by the QJE (a more appropriate "home" given the style.) It's always a lottery!
I saw this by
@toddrjones
and it resonated. For many years I followed the academic economics “consensus”, ranking a PhD student’s success by how well they place academically. TLDR: I regret following that misguided judgment, and here’s why (most relevant for econ/soc-sci): 1/n
As someone who’s parents didn’t complete high school, I could never understand what academia and research is until a professor of mine took interest in me. I was 30 when I went to grad school. Maybe if I had an academic parent I’d have done it much sooner
Most economists don't support rent control for many reasons. New NBER paper: "to the extent that rent control is intended to transfer wealth from high-income to low-income households, the realized impact of the law was the opposite of its intention."
Lots have folks have retweeted/commented on the below, which made me feel very sad reading it. Adding my 2 cents: I had my first kid in grad school, second a year into my tenure track. I saw all my peer asst profs stay in their office at 5ish when I would go home. 1/4
The truth is that no one on their death bed wished they wrote or published another paper, and citations don't love you back. The price that many pay to play the game is way, way too high.
It’s sad that people with this level of privilege dump on an education channel that offers so much to so many who otherwise have no access. I have taken extension classes at Stanford to broaden my horizons. This level of arrogant dismissal is uncalled for and unwarranted.
@kalihollowayftw
Hi, Harvard real-degree here. You're spot on. The "extension school" is a source of laughter and annoyance for students and alumni. (I think Columbia has one, too -- same thing there.) It's basically an "anyone can enroll, so long as you pay", no more stringent than a community
On a train from Newark to New Haven. Old; noisy; slow; dirty; This is the most travelled corridor in the US, and most dingy European cities have better trains than here. I am grateful for all the great things in the US, but man, public transportation sucks so bad!
Most scientists embrace George E. Box's “All models are wrong, but some are useful” famous quote. Sometimes models can be verbalized w/o math (e.g., Coase 1960 on social costs.) But having no model, verbal or math, makes any serious scientific debate impossible.
Academics: private sector jobs are often interesting and intellectually rewarding. I helped a friend negotiate her salary: she expected $250K and I convinced her to literally double her ask; she got even more!! It's CRITICAL to educate yourself about market wages!!
Talking to a recruiter about a senior data scientist job. I gave her my salary expectation ($150k) and she laughed and told me she’s never seen an offer lower than the 200s. I likely won’t get this job but want to share since no one tells academics these numbers.
OK - my first and last attempt at emulating one of my Twitter heroes,
@KhoaVuUmn
:
Real footage of a PhD advisor trying to get their student back on track to complete their dissertation...
Great example of how being right “on average” (giving Zillow a break on that) is not great when you bid on common-value goods and expose yourself to the winner’s curse. I’ll use this in the classroom for sure!
Retweeting this thread for ALL young (and old) academics. Our culture can be poisonous as much as Hollywood and maybe even more. Work hard, publish, but please keep your eye on the REAL prize: explore what truly brings you inner joy and peace.
Thank goodness I recovered fully. Never again did I feel torn: I went home earlier, stayed in my kids' schools longer, and indeed did not get tenure. But lots of "2nd best" jobs appeared and here I am. If anything, I wish I spent even MORE time with my kids. 3/4
Why are so many university leaders hesitating to condemn these atrocities? Because they are scared of the very extreme "social justice" warriors who lack any sense of critical thinking. Those who claim that responsibility lies on "both sides" and who support Hamas actions \1
"It is a very horrific testimony to the absolute carnage... and utter, utter brutality of Hamas"
@NicRobertsonCNN

Very proud that UC Berkeley's leadership is committed to in-person teaching in January! Plan is to (1) give boosters; (2) increase testing; and (3) mandate indoor face-covering. Go Bears!
This is beyond comprehension. I still consider myself left of center, but the woke left’s mindless obsession with classifying people as “oppressors” or “oppressed” is making the left an uncomfortable place for anyone who has a shred of critical thinking skills. Shameful.
In the new Harvard/Harris poll, 67% of respondents aged 18-24 agree that "Jews as a class are oppressors and should be treated as oppressors."
Consistent with other polls that have found relatively high anti-Jewish sentiment among young American adults.
@Sakiera_Hudson
Awesome shoots! Photo shots with Jim are the bomb, right?! He noticed some ink peaking from my shirt so we did this one, but decided that it may not be the best for the Haas webpage...😂
Academics: what's with your webpages that have a link to your cv that then takes me to *another* page with only one link to your cv? Amazon's “1-Click” order patent expired on September 12, 2017, in case that's what's holding you back...
When I went to eBay 11 years ago I underestimated how much fun/interesting research would come of it. The same happened a year+ ago when I agreed to do some work with Meta: I never anticipated the rich results that turned into this paper!
I had the pleasure of helping recruit Jon to Stanford 25 years ago; wrote papers with him; and got to know him as a friend. I could think of no one more suitable for this important job. Well done
@Stanford
!!
Erwin Chemerinsky has shown more loving kindness than ANYONE I know. That someone stoops low enough to execute this hit-job on him & his wife IN THEIR HOME is beyond despicable. You use this to suggest he is a white sup? I'll refrain from sharing what I think of folks like you
Catherine Fisk, a professor at Berkeley Law, ASSAULTS a Muslim Hijabi law student, while her husband Erwin Chemerinsky, DEAN of Berkeley Law screams LEAVE OUR HOUSE.
In the end, violent white supremacists with fancy degrees.

Because you're human... Practice the following, if you're up to it: when something happens to YOU, imagine that it happened to a GOOD FRIEND. Then, ask yourself what you would say to said friend, and repeat that to YOURSELF. Practice makes perfect...
I am really worried about the state of science as a trusted source of information. Many have now seen the recent fiasco regarding a very dishonest study of honesty
To my sane colleagues across all campuses: here are messages I received from non-Jewish colleagues at other universities. PLEASE reach out to your friends who can't believe some of the words coming out of academia. And PLEASE speak up publicly too. It's time for change!
I can’t believe this. So many economists have shown the harm caused by hidden fees and add-ons, and finally D.C. was battling these junk fees. This is such a bad move that really harms consumers. I hope some thoughtful house members block this.
House Republicans are pushing to roll back Obama-era rules that prohibit airlines from advertising anything but their all-in prices, including all required taxes and fees.
Bay Area people: drop what ever you’re doing and RUN over to
@UCBerkeley
’s Botanical Gardens. So much is in bloom, including rare turquoise Puya blossoms!
It’s that time of year again when I pull out an ancient piece of tech to make old school chopped liver for Passover. Hope everyone has a happy holiday weekend, be it Passover, Easter or Ramadan! (Global harmony seems a bit much to ask for, so wishful thinking will do for now…)
Data-sci/Econ folks: this is something you can do and get handsomely rewarded for. Now I understand why - it sounds SO f-ing boring. Compensating differentials…
Day in the Life of a Hedge Fund Analyst

Cannabis has been instrumental in helping me with serious sleep problems. I know others who have benefited in many ways. It's nice to see a large scale study that confirms some mild benefits & no signs of risk to mental health. Time for fed legalization!
I'm trying something different with an up and coming EdTech start up,
@scholar_site
.
I'm launching my first live online cohort, 'The Economics of Digital Platforms', designed for product managers, marketing specialists and business leaders.
Those who adopt data driven and evidence based decision processes will always win in the long run. Well done,
@dartmouth
, and I hope to see many other universities follow.
I believe wholeheartedly that DEI statements were introduced with good intentions to solve a big problem of access & opportunity. Everything I saw over the past 2-3 yrs, however, suggests that it creates a vacuous and harmful facade. Good ridden, which I hope
@UCBerkeley
follows.
Coming into economics with a laser focus on micro-theory, I would not have imagined that years later I would endorse this whole heartedly. Having a solid econometrics *sequence*, with a balance of coding and critical thinking, would do so many students a great service!
Totally agree
@MarketPowerYT
post here. We require our students to take intermediate micro/macro and econometrics first. It makes a huge difference. Take merics first.
You will be a better economist an the major will mean that much more.
Several months ago I demonstrated in SF AGAIST the government of Israel, that passed laws that weakened the independence of its justice system. In two days I'll demonstrate against the Hamas atrocities on my own Berkeley campus. Come join us!
In CompSci and engineering, industry jobs are considered as exciting and worthwhile as academic jobs, sometimes even more. With the growing industry demand for economists and other quant-soc-sci PhDs, I hope to see the attitudes of many of my colleagues change. Fast! 12/12
Lots of action around the new EJMR paper. I think it's important to remember a line Pierre Omidyar often used in reference to eBay: "'People are basically good". I believe that. Sure - there are some bad apples. 2%? 5%? I doubt that it's much higher than that. 1/2
A friend and I were talking about this EJMR paper and I think the most depressing thing for both of us is just how common the toxic views are. How many people have smiled in your face at a conference only to write the most virulent shit minutes later on that hellsite?
The quality of an organization depends on its ability to gain & retain talent. I'm SO EXCITED about our bumper crop of new hires at
@BerkeleyHaas
! I met several of them and am blown away by the quality of their research. And they're also fun to hang with!
BOOM! One day later, goal reached. Almost 2K people came to the defense of truth-seeking research; of fighting back when it matters; of supporting those who provide public goods.
It's a privilege and honor to be able to support my colleague Leif and the
@DataColada
team for the work they did and will hopefully continue to do. In an ideal world, the universities would back the legal fees. In a second best world, it's up to us. Please give what you can!
Please consider donating to this cause. I believe that scientists who rigorously & carefully criticize research *should* be subject to verification (& even counter-criticism) but *shouldn't* have to worry about paying $100k+ out of pocket:
@MaiaMindel
I said it before and I'll say it again: the difference between a microeconomist and a macroeconomist is that the former *admits* that they don't understand macroeconomics...
Really great comment by
@JustinWolfers
on humility. I never saw a McKinsey partner say "I don't know" and no one gets fired for hiring McKinsey... The demand for certainty and confidence, be it from the press or the people, is what's really killing humility.
This is beyond shameful. Beyond civil. Beyond decent. I implore the

administration to prosecute the perpetrators and bring them to justice. Then make sure that speech on my campus is free and open to all opinions.
Last night at

Every quant academic MUST read this. 🤯Such editors MUST be outed and removed from their post as they show a complete lack of understanding basic statistics.
@chris_petsko
: I know this sounds scary for an AP, so maybe consult one of your mentors on how to best do it.
I found this to be pretty shocking.
I failed to replicate a famous finding from 20 years ago, and the paper's editor reprimanded me for even *raising the possibility* that the original authors might have (unknowingly) reported a Type I error.
When
@philippstrack85

I told him that I’m happy for him and sad for
@UCBerkeley

It is heartwarming to see the support that Datacolada is getting. Calling all academics, especially in social sci/psych, to contribute even a few bucks to show your support. Not everyone can afford to give much, but everyone can afford to show support.
I'm not a fan of some of
@linakhanFTC
ideas (especially moving away from the consumer welfare standard). But I strongly endorse banning employment noncompete clauses. Nondisclosures protect companies from leaking secrets; Noncompetes just harm employees!
Many colleagues believe that a PhD’s success is severely diminished if they do not join a research university. This in turn is transmitted to the students, putting pressure on folks to write that killer paper that few can write (a combination of creativity, work, and LUCK!) 5/n
As I prepare to put the final touches on our passover Seder, I am reminded that it’s easy to take freedom for granted. Those who may have tried to celebrate in Ukraine, including
@ZelenskyyUa
, surely do not. Praying for a free 🇺🇦during this special evening.
Some argue that we give out PhD scholarships anticipating these folks to become academics and not industry scientists. Seriously? Many industry jobs create real value that can impact scores of people globally. Industry needs research skills just as much as academia does. 11/n
Thank you
@lugaricano
. If I posted this then I'd be vilified and of course, discredited for being Jewish. I am curious to see how the morally bankrupt justice warriors will try to discredit you for pointing out the obvious. What has happened to academia?! It's beyond disgraceful!
Sesame Street for Professor Butler:

Yep. Same thing.
A friend shared a beautiful thought with me that maybe others may benefit from as well:
We can't change the past, but we can change
our understanding of it and how it lives in us.
This echoes several conversations I had with folks who openly shared their support for Trump. It’s the fear of the progressive left that’s driving them to the right.
On a recent trip, my driver was a pious Chechen-American. He’s a Putin fan and will vote for Trump. “Why,” I asked. “They let my people live as Muslims,” he replied. Don’t underestimate how the West’s culture wars are driving the ongoing global realignment. (1/6)

@Jenniferhochsc2
Thank you
@realchrisrufo
for your reply. I don't take it for granted that you reciprocated & I wish for more thoughtfully exchange here. I see the logic of a personal apology as the remarks were pointed directly at you.
@Jenniferhochsc2
: would you consider such a public apology?
@jensqu4r3d
@Columbia
It is a disgrace, and I am grateful to your courage to point that out. The joke is “preserving Columbia University as a beacon for “fostering critical thinking and opening minds to different points of view,”” Critical thinking seems to be elusive to those who sign such letters.
Great thread by Chris. The message is not “we don’t speak with economists”. The message is “we don’t *care* about economic reasoning.” Senior competition appointments back that up. As I’ve said before, tell me how close you are to politics, so I know how far to be from you!
New legislation on "price gouging" just dropped

It's interesting that even folks who never worked at Amazon can see the value of the "document--not powerpoint" culture. I believe that this is one tool that sets Amazon apart both in innovation and execution. It's practically a no-BS guarantee, and I loved it when I was there.
Jeff Bezos said:
“There is no way to write a six-page narratively structured memo and not have clear thinking.”
Here’s the writing framework Bezos uses (that you can too):
My friend, colleague, and former Dean

Recent media frenzy suggested foul play, but the paper on
@augustinlandier
's website has the clear disclosure and the results are quite narrowly presented. The authors don't pretend this is an academic paper. IMHO, the media has been unprofessional towards them.
After I conveyed my enthusiastic support, they asked “but what will my advisors say? Won’t they be upset?” I was livid but understood the concern. I encouraged said student to live THEIR life and have that conversation. They did. They graduated. Took the job. They’re happy. 7/n
I used to dismiss the “cancel” movement as a mostly harmless annoyance. In hindsight, I see how careless that was of me. I invite all those who feel an urge to cancel me to go ahead - because if you won't do it now, I am likely going to give you a "good" reason to later.
@steve_tadelis
@lugaricano
The progressive movement has been hijacked by intolerant radicals/ revolutionaries who seems to be okay with killing people that they stereotype as “enemy” (even if some people killed are “progressives”). The “cancel” movement was just the beginning of what’s happening.
Binge-watched

The joys of publishing in economics, 7 years after inception... this one was really fun to work on, both for folks involved and the results! For those interested in reference point formation, this may be fun too.
Very few people have the means and capacity to do great good in the world single handedly. I find it mind boggling that some choose to do things like this instead:
@realchrisrufo
@Jenniferhochsc2
I spoke out against what she and others wrote and I celebrated HES and other ES. I am grateful that she added this admission. Have you considered maybe accepting it rather than creating more vitriol? This is a serious question, not an attempt to get into a nasty public exchange.
@ben_golub
So would I! But as someone who sat in other meetings at other companies, you'd be surprised how rare it is for folks to think about incentives and equilibrium behavior. This is another example of how prediction success (ML) leads to prescription failure (econ)!
So, when someone smiles in your face, it's most likely not a disguise. And when you witness people shitting over someone else behind their back, try not to play into the peer effects. That way the shit does not spread as much. And if you have the courage, gently condemn it.
Please meet
@J_R_Schroeder

@UCBerkeley
colleagues: those who uncover the truth, and those who are dedicated to pursue it with level headedness.
I am waiting to learn more about this case. It is extremely concerning. My coauthors and I are auditing our papers with Francesca, and identifying the raw data files. I think (hope) other co-authors are doing likewise. We will announce the results of the audit when they are ready
Very cool paper by a young scholar in my field - some may think that 2-stage procurement auctions might intensify competition, but it actually helps cartels sustain a collusive bidding ring! Here is her JMP on collusion in auctions:
With a team of applied research economists, we applied the research methods I used in academia to eBay. Instead of reaching a dozen referees (assuming 2-3 rejections) and a few academics, the work impacted hundreds of millions of customers and many millions of $! 3/n

Very impressive,
@bchesky
. I have a hunch that your net loss might have been a positive profit if you stuck to your decision to cutting your digital marketing budget. This still makes no sense:
“The poll found that 66% of students said it is acceptable to shout down a speaker to prevent him or her from speaking on campus and 23% say it is acceptable to use violence to stop a campus speech.” That’s 1 in 4 pro violence. Disturbing

I was curious to what extent these numbers are also correlated with NYC public transportation ridership, so I plotted the MTA data. Definitely seems like a new equilibrium.
Just watched a wonderful documentary: “searching for sugar man”. The storytelling is masterful and the story touches the heart. (It’s from 2012 and won the Oscar so maybe many of you already watched it!)
Said student accepted the Amazon job. Within 24 hours changed their mind, which happened again 24 hours later. They did not deserve to suffer b/c they were trained by elite academics whose preferences do not represent what’s good for many of their students. This must change. 10/n
Vulnerability and self care is not something that is emphasized in grad school or academia (or most places). This is very courageous, and I have been there too. The more we are able to be vulnerable, the more resources and role models others in similar situations will have.
So, I’m gonna take a break from twitter for a bit. Have done this before but figure I should maybe talk about it this time, in some attempt at creating a public good…(thread)
Unlike pharma, where acquisitions can lead to killing competition (
@florianederer
's excellent JPE paper), in tech they often lead to large scale execution, something start-ups almost always fail at. Is that distinction too subtle for regulators?
This is an important critique of the NYT. I have had the benefit of conducting A/B tests with industry that led (IMHO) to insightful research, and hope to do more. The tone is not helpful, and as noted, probably hypocritical
Demonizing A/B testing. Without this "social experiment" (loaded phrase) they would not know how to improve prospects for all.

GRATEFUL the Govm't is targeting this: "Many online ticket sellers impose massive service fees at check-out that are not disclosed when consumers are choosing their tickets." HONORED that my research with Sarah, Tom &

that’s much needed in our circles. Econ seminars and Econ Twitter have combative and sometimes unkind tendencies. Never too late to change that! A bit of kindness goes a long way.
It’s the season to post job-market papers.
1. JMPs are working papers. As with all working papers, they should be open to public discussion and critique.
2. There’s every reason to be civil and generous when discussing JMPs, especially since the author is stressed and busy.
