Asked my father to make a drawing of my JMP. This is what came out of it. You can find my paper "Technology, Skills, and Performance: The Case of Robots in Surgery" on my website

Using only food, I am super excited to share that I will be joining
@ECONMunich
in September as an AP in Economics. I will miss my friends and colleagues at
@EconUCL
so much but I really can't wait to start this new chapter. Big thanks to my super advisors!
As an economist, I found really frustrating that every rejection feels like a stab in the heart, while every interview request is like ''meh, they are probably interviewing everyone''. Why can't I just be a perfect Bayesian?

My twin brother and I, 21 years old, graduating from
@Unibocconi
, full of hopes and dreams. Unaware that most parameters cannot be point identified (under mild assumptions).
Wow! Unbelievably honoured to have won the best paper award at the
@EsHConference
. Two great days full of exciting conversations, research, and an incredible bunch of talented people.
I had a wonderful time discussing my PhD Thesis and doing my VIVA on Tuesday. The fire drill and the pouring rain made it an even more remarkable experience. Thanks to my brilliant examiners
@HjortJ
and Carol. And please call me Doctor Ashtari Tafti from now on.
Seven years ago I moved to London. I was in the midst of my twenties with all my most precious belongings packed in one suitcase. Today is my last day here. I love you London and already miss you. Go gunners!
Met my first
@ECONMunich
students today. Feels great to have the opportunity to influence young minds. Wishing passion for teaching was less looked down in our profession. Teaching is probably the most impactfull part of our job.

Thank you so much
@jenniferdoleac
for sharing my job market paper! After five years in my PhD cocoon is so nice to get people to see what I have been doing.
Given how I felt on and off for five years, I am not surprised at all. Besides the fact that there is so little support from the Institution and almost no actual venue to discuss how we are doing.
Just released a new working paper on mental health in European Economics Departments joint w.

,

, and Paul Barreira. Follow this thread for an overview of our research and key findings.
Please, read the full working paper here:
Interesting work! And related to my JMP: we show that women’s earnings drop after marriage = the marriage earnings gap. We account for children, use admin (🇩🇪) & survey data (🇪🇺), decompose the gap, and analyze mechanisms behind it.
Stay tuned for a longer thread later this fall!

working hard today. Although I am no artist and we do something completely different in life, we have one thing in common: our work is our passion (and there is something priceless about that).
Last time teaching signalling games at UCL today. I absolutely loved teaching game theory to undergraduates. I will miss this course and
@EconUCL
lots. Actually, just realised that I am teaching advanced micro next term so maybe not really the last time.
My father is an artist and art director, my mother is an art director, I am an applied micro economist, my twin brother is a macroeconomist, my younger brother is a graduate student in economics. Can anyone explain this?

My father was transferred from the hospital ICU to the cardiology department, and now is finally recovering in a rehabilitation unit. He made a portray of his roommate in hospital. Here it is.
Adopt a young researcher for Christmas, have a look at my JMP 'Technology, Skills, and Performance: The Case of Robots in Surgery'. I show that the returns from using this technology depend on the skills of the surgeon using it. Cool right?

Just got forwarded, by mistake, a list of rejected people from a place I have applied for. Couldn't help but Google a few names. Wow so many great profiles. But what a breach of confidentiality.

I think we should be taking more students who are like 27, went to Quackaquack State, and worked! Not more people who always wanted to do a PhD, only had a 3.4, but knew enough about PhD admissions to know to, like, apply to Raj's lab at age 22.

@ashtari_elena
's JMP studies the use of *robots in surgery*! 🤖
She finds that lower skill surgeons gain the most from robots... BUT the lower skill surgeons use robots the least.
Discretion in usage of a tool can dilute its ability to close gaps in outcomes.
@marcfbellemare
Add constantly worried about money, not knowing whether you are good enough, and being so damn insecure that this is what makes you happy. Yet not sure whether is the PhD thing or just being between you 20s and 30s.
Very happy to have this paper out! The paper started out as my master's dissertation where I assumed away overcrowding externalities. Slowly realized that, instead of assuming them away, studying them was more realistic and more important! Loved working on this with
@papiteide
!
Thank you
@papiteide
! I am really grateful for the wonderful supervision and support I have received by you and
@PaulaAureo
. I feel very lucky to have found such a great support system.

: supervising PhD students is one of the very best things we do as academics, and supervising
@ashtari_elena
(together with
@PaulaAureo
) has been one of my highlights of the last few years. 1/n
