🚨New Working Paper!
Do people find it repugnant when someone profits off another's misfortune, even if they don't cause the misfortune?
Across 3 studies we find:
- Yes! people punish these types of profits ✅
- This occurs even if there is no intention to profit ❌
Regarding Gino's claim about RA's collecting data/doing analysis
1. What incentive (if any) would an RA have to fudge the data? Especially if they knew they would not be a co-author
2. If your RA is doing the data analysis, they should probably be a co-author.
A major reason why this is so different from previous moral panics over technology: Gen Z sees the problem, agrees social media is bad for them, but feels trapped because.... everyone else is on it. (Here's a clip from

Officially became a PhD candidate today after passing my confirmation milestone presentation.
Here is a bad meme I made to signify this achievement, and yes, I will be doing this for every 'life milestone'.
Some Personal News:
I'm thrilled to share that I have accepted a postdoc position with
@chilbe3
and Oliver Hauser's cross-institutional research group at The Max Planck Institute and The University of Exeter.
I'll be moving to Europe in 2023 and could not be more excited!
What happens when you tell people they are morally obligated to donate to charity?
@SchoeneggerPhil
& I address this question in our forthcoming paper in JBEE.

BREAKING: For the 1st time, a randomized controlled trial, conducted in China, has shown that circumcising men who have sex with men reduces their HIV risk. This finding is limited to men who primarily engage in insertive intercourse ("tops").

I would interested to listen to an
@80000Hours
podcast with someone who took on a high EV career with low prob of success and didn't succeed.
Currently most 80k pods have people who succeeded or are successful.

One more to add: I think it was in Bolivia or Peru (I can't recall exactly) there is a tax on finished buildings/houses. So every building has 4 small construction poles sticking out the top to show that it is not 'finished'

As I've said multiple times on twitter, this is my favourite paper in the past few years.
Glad to see it get the recognition it deserves.
The first paper from my PhD is forthcoming in EER 🥳.
TLDR:
👉Information Asymmetry is a problem in buyer/seller markets.
👉Our simple mechanism introduces psychological costs for defection.
👉 Buyers' trust ⬆️
👉 Sellers' cooperation ⬆️
👉 Market efficiency ⬆️

Border Agent: So you're a doctor?
Me: yep, I'm an academic.
BA: So not an actual doctor.
Me: A PhD is a doctorate. It's literally describing a doctor! The problem here is that medical practitioners have co-opted the word "doctor".
Nobody even cares about etymolo-
Got my first rejection today.
Not sure how to feel. Referees gave good detailed feedback, but I don't agree with all their arguments. Editors comments were encouraging. Hopefully this makes the paper better in the long run!
How does everyone usually deal with rejection?
I'm quite chuffed looking back on 2023.
- Finished my PhD
- Had my first paper published (and 3 in total!)
- Moved to Europe
- Travelled around the Sun
I just donated to this. The
@DataColada
team provide an incredible public good helping the pursuit of truth in social science research.
Also, it's important to support them, so threatening scientists legally isn't perceived as a credible threat.
World’s Most Iconic Graduate School Recommendation Letter:
John Nash, a prodigious mathematician known for his groundbreaking work in game theory and other mathematical disciplines, submitted an application to Princeton University’s esteemed mathematics graduate program in 1948.
Very excited to have my first ever paper accepted for publication! (co-authored with the awesome
@SchoeneggerPhil
). Have to celebrate those Ws!
I do find it quite funny that I am a published philosopher before a published economist though 😅
Okay so Oppenheimer yeah. How about a biopic about Gauss (1805) and Tukey (1965) (re)inventing the Fast Fourier Transform?
This is not my worst idea hear me out...
Today, I had the privilege of listening to Professor John List's academic story and general insights into experimental economics, science and life.
Here are some tidbits that I picked up

My friend went to see if he could get an AZ vaccine today. He said that the people working there tried to talk him out of it and to wait for Pfizer instead.
No wonder the vaccine roll-out is slow in Australia.
Hey
#econtwitter
unfortunately my PhD program does not have a field course in experimental economics, so I am trying to be pro-active and crowdsource advice/tips for some self study.
What papers do you think one should read/cover in an experimental econ field course?

If Richard knew for years, why didn't he speak up? Is it due to a lack of evidence, or there are incentives not to speak out (backlash etc)? Or something else?

While I wasn't able to attend my graduation, I was able to have this nice moment with my main PhD advisor
@erte_xiao
celebrating me finally receiving my testamur!
Do people care more about 'General Moral Principles' (such as utilitarianism) or their intuitions in philosophical thought experiments?
@SchoeneggerPhil
& I run an experiment in the context of Population Ethics to answer this question.

I think part of the problem is that your average person doesn't like the idea of tradeoffs.
For example, ask someone what the optimal death rate is for car accidents (in terms of actual policy).
I don't know about anyone else, but I really miss in person seminars and conferences. They were my favourite aspects of my PhD journey to date and would reinvigorate my own research.
Despite other benefits, I have struggled to engage with the online format.
I had the best time teaching in person last semester. Despite reviews not being the best metric, I must admit is is nice to receive some official recognition.
How I published 13 first-author papers during my 2.5 year post-doc:
- All the data were already collected
- 5 papers were literature reviews
- I read incredibly fast
- I write even faster
@xriskology
This paper doesn't really say anything about the effect of donating to AMF (or other related charities) on "food insecurity, greater poverty..." etc.
In your 'high probability' of harm. How much would this be as a result of negative effects from donating to AMF?
There is a family on my train where
- the child is swinging from the roof like its monkey bars
- the mum is watching instagram videos at full volume (no headphones)
- the dad is coughing and vaping...
What externality hell is this!
Over the next few months, I'm going to try and read at least one experimental economics paper every day that would be covered in a field course.
I'm using twitter as a commitment device and this thread will document my progress.
Very excited to announce that my paper with
@SchoeneggerPhil
has been published as a chapter in 'Experiments in Moral and Political Philosophy. '
You can check out a summary of our research & findings in the thread below.
