I am so deeply disturbed by this video and how callously she was willing to put your brother's life at risk. How quickly the racism came out. Tons of non-black birders have asked ppl to leash dogs without being threatened with cops. Tell him the NYC birding community is with him!
Statement from UCLA Hillel makes clear violence was initiated by pro-Israel outsiders. "We can not have a clearer ask for the off-campus Jewish community: stay off our campus. Do not fund any actions on campus. Do not protest on campus. Your actions are harming Jewish students."
I have been quiet about COVID lately because I just do not know what to say about living in a country that gets through the Omicron wave w/ 3,000 people dying per day post vaccine availability and concludes we need LESS mitigation. It feels like Jeff Bezos is running our country.
Can we talk about the IRONY that campus sexual assault is dealt with through laborious internal processes, a surfeit of "due process," and overwhelming fear of Type I error, whereas peaceful protests apparently warrant immediate external policing?
Issue with
#UrgencyofNormal
framing is that we get to normal by reducing cases, hospitalizations, + deaths. Normal is the ER having a bed for you. Normal is your kid having a teacher every day. 2300 deaths a day ISN'T normal. Normal requires recognizing the

As someone who's also Asian American with those numbers who went to Duke, I have to say it was galling to see white kids get into better schools than me. But... white kids. Ivies absolutely discriminate against Asian Americans. ZERO to do with affirmative action.
If Black women like Naomi Osaka and Meghan Markle tell you that interacting with the press is negatively affecting their mental health, you should probably trust that *their experience is different from yours* and try to understand it rather than questioning their reality.
Another round of op-eds on returning to school and dropping masking. I want kids in school. Can people not understand that mitigation measures like masking, proper quarantine + isolation, contact tracing, test to exit etc serve the goal of keeping kids in school?

Neil Gorsuch extensive plagiarism outlined in the article below, and no one is calling for him to resign, because there isn't a highly coordinated, politically and racially motivated effort to force him out.

~12 years after I first started the project, I'm relieved to have the two halves of my job market paper on "reproductive capital" both accepted at journals!! A dating experiment showing men rate older women lower (pic) at JOLE and a matching model and simulation at the JPE 🧵
This cover is going to stay with me for a long time. "Who takes care of the children of the people who take care of your children" is a question I implore everyone who has the means to pay for private childcare to ask themselves.
I'm teaching economics of gender right now, and we spend a lot of time debating the definition of womanhood, when tbh I think we all know it's constantly walking the line between being nice enough to men that they don't kill you but not so nice that they think it's a date.
Tomorrow morning, the Biden administration will unveil the National COVID-19 Preparedness Plan, a roadmap to help us build on the successes over the last 13 months and continue to protect Americans. Here's tonight's State of the Pandemic, in 10 charts.
First, national trends.

I would love for someone to visit Rikers Island and claim it has beneficial effects for mental health. And I want to be very clear that I am not critiquing the underlying paper, as I have a firm stance on not critiquing students/JMCs publicly.
More evidence that incarceration has protective/beneficial effects for mental health (due to better access to treatment) -- contrary to conventional wisdom based on correlational evidence.
For the record, Jordan Peterson definitely also has an eating disorder. If your "healthy" eating is so rigid that it controls your life, it is not healthy and is in fact an illness.
[Caveat that some people have actual medical conditions that require rigid eating, and godspeed]

Every time one of these goes viral, I worry junior scholars will misunderstand the norms. Giving talks to people who will cite, referee, and even edit your publications is a core part of the job you're already paid for. If that's the audience, you should not expect an honorarium.
I was invited to do a talk recently that would have helped a lot of people. Want to know what their budget was? They just told me: $500.
Dr. Sheena Howard and I went live just yesterday to talk about how academics should charge a minimum of $3500 for a 1 hour talk.
Another report of journal submissions surging. I have two kids at home and am getting about 1-2hrs of work done a day. I don't think I'm atypical. And, surprise surprise, universities' COVID clock extensions look to be gender neutral and irrespective of care responsibilities!

submissions have surged to a record level in last month. Similar patterns outside economics at top journals. Explanations? Can this continue?

You want to know why we don't have more black economists? Could it be because our black students are being harassed and marginalized?

These "every person for themself" public health takes show an incredibly poor understanding of economics. Masking is a public good. People are willing to do it if they know others will, too. Mask mandates help support the good equilibrium where we all mask to protect each other.
I’m really pissed off at passive-aggressive, neoliberal “public health” messages saying “I support X, ppl should do it, but neither the govt, business nor I should put any effort into it as a policy.” Universities do this all the time. Enraging.

that AI use by students harms learning. When given access to GPT-4, students perform better. But when it's taken away, they subsequently perform worse than students who never had access--they learned less.
Penn encampment was disbanded by police this morning. Waiting to hear on arrests. I have to say, the sight of these cops weilding bats marching on students peacefully protesting unnerves me far more than the students' chants ever could.

Oh my god, the replies to this are horrifying. There is a generational change in the works around gender, and hoo boy we are not ready. (The underlying research is very cool).
Clear evidence that employers discriminate against nonbinary individuals.
All-else-equal, disclosing that one uses "they/them” pronouns substantially lowers the chances of getting a job interview.
If you understand econ, you know that ppl can be happier with the mandate *even if they would not mask individually without it.* The essence of a public goods problem is that we WANT the policymaker to tell us + everyone else to do something. People aren't failing, policies are.
Ok,

time for my thread about what I've learned in asking people about the horrible job market, as well as my own accumulated wisdom. The first thing I want to say is: you matter. As a person, as a human being, as an individual separate from your accomplishments.
I always tell people when completing a performance review, repeat every sentence with a white, male name. If the sentence sounds "off," it shouldn't be in your review of a woman/person of color, either. "Brad can be a little shrill in meetings," etc.
N95s in schools. Lunch outdoors. It's offing unbelievable to me that it's been two years and we've made zero adaptations. Nobody gives a shit about whether our kids can learn safely, truly.
Non-black parents talking to your kids about race? Instead of "We don't see color," try: "It's true, society often treats people differently based on the color of their skin. In our household, we actively work to change that, and create a world where everyone can be equal."
🧵Hey! Are you or do you know any super talented job candidates who are having a rough market, or students who would be ready to graduate but decided to avoid the market this year?

I verified this quote before RTing. Shocking. I absolutely condemn Hamas's attack on children and civilians more broadly. But 1 million of the Gaza strip's inhabitants are children. Children that will suffer, be bombed, lose parents, starve. War crimes cannot answer war crimes.

I'm an economist and I agree. But I don't think they're thinking about macro-economic consequences; I think they're thinking about tax revenues, because the federal government has left states and cities to fend for themselves.
Key mistake political leaders are making is acting on belief that leaving indoor dining, bars, gyms open is good business
This will cause schools to be closed all fall, winter
Negative effects on the economy (and kids) will be huge
I'm no economist but seems like a big error
If this is true (Econ PhD student at Princeton arrested and permanently barred from campus, which means unable to finish his degree), and if there isn't some kind of EXTREME additional offense, this seems like a major over-reaction, and one we should push back on as a community.
I will never forget attending an admitted student event for Duke, my first time really being around privileged people, and hearing "Most people in Chicago go to private school." I snapped "NO-Most of the people YOU know." Who we think of as human critically affects public policy.

This makes me really, really sad. I've really lost faith in Walensky. These are people's parents, grandparents, children, and friends. These are all people whose health you're responsible for. You should fight for people with co-morbidities--they need you more than anyone.

@ProfEmilyOster
I am feeling the same this week. We lost the chance to get kids back in school because we chose industries that produce tax revenue because there was no relief for states from the federal government. And, in a lot of important ways, we don't have a federal government right now.

Compelling event study evidence that removing mask mandates in Massachusetts led to dramatically increased covid cases compared to districts that kept mandates. More cases means more kids and teachers out of school. We keep school "normal" by keeping kids safe.
"What did we find?"
School districts which removed mask policies had an immediate increase in COVID cases in both students and staff.
This increase in cases got bigger over the next 10 weeks.

help needed. I play a role in advising our PhD students. I want to give them some advice/insight about the scary econ job market next year. Is anyone who was slated to go on the market in '08, or in any similarly bad year, willing to share their experience?
A lot of discussions over the weekend on how to improve economics generally and on people's positive experiences. Can I say gently that both are highjacking a discussion about racism? Fixing elitism is great. Good mentors are great. But we were talking about racism in economics.
For transparency so no one needs to check EJMR, we emailed candidates today to schedule interviews, which will take place next week. Thank you to all the amazing candidates who applied-- it was so hard to choose!!
And PEOPLE, especially kids, who want to mask but are sensitive to the social norm. This idea that "anyone who wants to mask can" just completely ignores everything we know about human behavior from economics, sociology, psychology, you name it!!
@femonomics
Mandates (or even a recommendation for universal masking from the CDC) also gives cover to businesses who want to keep customers and employees safe, but lack the courage to do it on their own. Lots of local performance venues stopped requiring masks thx to the Green Sharpie map.
Out today in NBER working papers, my paper "Collateralized Marriage" w/ Jeanne Lafortune. We put forth a model where wealth creates a stronger and more advantageous marriage contract by providing, essentially, divorce insurance to the lower earning partner

Economist take on the Dawn Dorland vs. Sonya Larson saga: People are SUPPOSED to get utility out of doing good things! It's how we make sure pro-social behavior happens! Put the kidney donors on the Jumbotron! Look at social recognition working to inspire someone else to donate!

Dawn on the jumbitron directly inspired someone to donate a kidney. It was, in fact, an act that unequivocally bright more positivity into the world.
Oh my god, the babies having to go on strike so that they aren't forced to get COVID by policymakers. I think this is the image that finally broke me, after everything. 😭😭😭
It's my son's third birthday and I made him this cake (by request for "a unicorn cake that tastes like a horsey"), and obviously we can't share it with anyone, so I'm sharing it with the internet instead :)
I really, truly cannot believe we're still doing the gender neutral clock extension thing. Having a baby is not a gender neutral event! We have compelling evidence of its harms! We gotta figure something else out!!
🤔 Perhaps some women -- just thinking out loud here -- are anticipating having children, and balancing family with their careers, and they happen to know that their male colleagues will get the same leave and same tenure clock treatment...
This. I tell students they're SUPPOSED to be bad at this. That's why they're in school. If they were already good at writing research papers they could have skipped the PhD!
Big thank you to my students for nominating me for this! It's true, you're all my favorites! "I think there are a lot of myths about what [MBAs] are like. My students are passionate, dedicated, intellectually curious, vibrant, funny, and KIND."
So, these 11% are clearly not "regretting surgery"--most had none. Instead, they are going back and forth between living according to their gender identity and their assigned gender. Why might someone do that? You don't have to wonder, the survey tells you, and it's transphobia.
Hi
#EconTwitter
! Is this thing still on? My department, Business Economics and Public Policy, is hiring this year at Wharton! BEPP is an Econ department within a business school. We have great people doing IO, development, public, behavioral, labor, environmental, and theory. 🧵
Hey for people deliberately misunderstanding this, I'm not saying don't charge corporations, or for general audience talks! I'm saying that giving *academic seminars* benefits YOU as much as the audience, and it's key to accept these as a junior scholar!
What's the truth? I googled "rate of people who regret trans surgery." The incorrect 11% number is the first result. The second result is this WPATH provider survey, that shows the true rate is 0.3%--62 patients out of 22,725. End🧵
Listening live to WKCR. It is very scary the BODILY harm to their students that administrators are willing to risk to project some kind of control to donors and meddling politicians. You can listen to the livestream of excellent student reporting here:
Universities, like Columbia, must ask themselves, “under what conditions would they permit the police to kill one of its students or one of its faculty members.
Is Columbia willing to have police kill one of its students today? That is the gamble they’re taking.
HOW do you keep making research progress when everything sucks? This link was one of the most helpful things for me in a really rough period for getting research published. Stop just thinking in publications and instead think in "points on the board."
2023 economic sciences laureate, Claudia Goldin, provided the first comprehensive account of women’s earnings and labour market participation through the centuries. Her research reveals the causes of change and the main sources of the remaining gender gap.

It will never stop being outrageous to me that we are allowed to have "legacy" admissions, the equivalent of the voting grandfather policy, that date back to alumni admitted before women, people of color, and Jews many places, but NOT programs for disadvantaged groups. What???
Duke admits 11% of the general applicants but 23% of legacy applicants—whose parents and grandparents parents were accepted during Jim Crow.
Duke didn’t even accept Black students until 1963. Now Black scholarships are banned but racist Jim Crow Legacy thrives.
This is America.
These aren’t just pipe bombs sent in the mail.
These are assassination attempts on former Presidents, former Vice President, former Secretary of State, former National Security Advisor, former Attorney General, members of Congress and the attempted murder of public figures.
Exactly this. Accountability would be a ventilation upgrade tracker, and daily report of which school districts should have mask mandates, along with providing high quality masks for kids and adults alike.
The White House could develop clear standards that identify whether a school is sufficiently safe, inform community members whether their schools meet these standards, and take responsibility for ensuring every kid attends a safe school.
But safety is not the real priority.
