In 1982 the historian Barbara Fields called it "that favorite question of American social scientists—whether race or class 'variables' better explain 'American reality'" and more than 40 years later that question is still ubiquitous in U.S. research.

Not sure why I thought the answer could have been cute, but Wikipedia says Texas had to give up that land bc it wanted to be a slave state and the Missouri Compromise prohibited slavery north of parallel 36°30' north. TX wanted slavery so bad it gave up that whole strip of land.

Americans are a piece of work. We can’t fathom a society where we pay people to stay home. The two options we can conceive of are: everyone stays out and dies from illness, or everyone stays in and dies from poverty. We don’t stop to ask, might there be an alternate arrangement?

This isn’t about greed. It’s survival. People can’t buy food or pay rent or mortgages. Small businesses are closing. Dentists and doctors are going into the red. Schools are going to start closing. This is the destruction of society we’re talking about.

Had Congress passed the Harris-Sanders-Markey Covid relief bill back in May, each person in the US would be ending the year with an extra $20,000, up to three kids. That’s $100,000 for a family of two adults and three kids. Our discussions about Christmas would be so different.
