someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this. my family is dying
17 of 20 of the highest paid professions (by median wage) are doctors. doctors earn more than software engineers, data scientists, and investment bankers. I really think people need to put this stuff into context.
The Mayor once again putting himself into a trick bag. Either he's eventually going to fire Carter, but not get any appreciation for it because he fought it for so long, or he'll never fire him & he'll own 4 years of CTA's continued failures.
Ok, but CTU had been grooming Johnson for his mayoral run since 2019.
It’s not great that at no point did anyone from CTU or the city’s progressive political wing stop and say, “Hey, this guy is a moron!”
What's tragic here is that the Economist is exactly the kind of publication that would just unfairly savage a Mayor over *any* progressive governance. But even they recognize how it's just boring managerial incompetence, not progressivism making this administration fail.
An institution that preys on the vulnerable and gullible and financially scams them into lives of destitution is buying up real estate in the South Loop.
…but enough about Columbia College, this Scientology thing is wild.
Guys, the bigger story here is that he’s giving important roles to a 29 year old activist whose only qualification for employment is the fact that she’ll be a yes man to the mayor, not the fact that a 29 year old has said stupid stuff.
Nothing will ever top the guy on r/chicago who was insisting that cameras are dangerous because it's a safety hazard for him to look down at his speedometer while driving in an area full of pedestrians.
@d_h_sanders
CUNY had a student center named for Assata Shakur for like 25 years. The idea they'd fire someone for being "pro-Palestine" is more than a little dubious.
If he were from Chicago, IL Dems would have drawn him a district where his shtick would have played.
Instead his district was just Westchester, which…lol no.
It’s wild how much of Twitter is people with obvious Cluster B personality traits getting from validation from people going “yeah, keep doing those maladaptive behaviors!”
I hung out downtown on a weekday yesterday morning for the first time in forever.
My impression was “not empty but not really busy either”.
Big yikes if other cities like Seattle aren’t matching that.
It’s wild how much of Twitter is people with obvious Cluster B personality traits getting from validation from people going “yeah, keep doing those maladaptive behaviors!”
Man, I just can’t understand why more people aren’t paying attention to a bunch of weirdos getting arrested during the “trying to get arrested” protest.
@CougarSpider
@agraybee
There’s always one in the Chicago one who excuse it because “they do it because they don’t feel a connection to the community.”
it might be worth noting that M3, the "chicago political consultancy" hired to do this poll, is run by a republican operative and was paid more than $500k by the vallas campaign last year.
seems relevant!
A teacher on the 5th floor of City Hall, and soon, a teacher in the White House. We're going to "Teach" the nation how to defeat MAGA and make the billionaire class invest in working people.
It’s darkly funny that Brandon Johnson finally has a good week but the city’s lefties are mad at him for not letting them break windows at the Israeli consulate or whatever.
.
@stacydavisgates
changed her Twitter account to Jason Lee Stan Account which is probably confusing for Chicagoans who read
@byaliceyin
@royalpratt
‘s recent story on the mayor’s adviser.
CTU spox tells me this is for another Jason Lee running for city council in Stockton, CA
they are doing this to send a message to anyone who voices any dissent over the palestinian genocide. this is a threat. they know for a fact that she wasn’t actually going to murder anyone. i pray she is acquitted for every single count.
It’s sort of a forgotten bit of football history that it was Rahm Emanuel’s people who pitched the NFL on the draft being a potential big crowd-drawing event.
They saying y’all gave $1.5M to Kamala Harris overnight and Little Miss Flint about to touch COLLEGE and aint hit her fundraising goal for clean water yet.
Man.
Nothing says “I respect female athletes” like suggesting that a professional women’s league play on a poorly maintained artificial field that’s 53 yards wide.
What if the
@ChicagoParks
offered to host the
@CHGO_RedStars
home game at Douglass Park to show that we won't let Riot Fest displace residents or womens soccer fans and players?
So did CTU leadership seriously believe that Pritzker was going to be the one to take the political hit of raising taxes for you?
If so, that was dumb.
If you’re didn’t, and you’re trying to blame our popular governor for CPS’s fiscal problems, that was also dumb.
@SSKedreporter
@CapitalFax
Interesting, we're heading into the DNC with an $800 per pupil funding cliff across the country, MAGA rising, and the state is doing all it should do. Got it.
Local reporters in Chicago and other cities, please look into how laundromats are disappearing from gentrifying neighborhoods, leaving working families lacking in-unit W/D with fewer options to was their clothes.
Yet another failure of the private market; public laundromats now
A Bay Area school struggling to boost low test scores and student attendance is paying $250,000 for an organization called Woke Kindergarten to train teachers to disrupt racism and remove those barriers to learning. Its test scores fell even further.
Saved you a click: It’s about the fact that you can’t just loosely attach an item over the sidewalk from your window that’s likely to fall onto a pedestrian, but the renter is picking this as a hill to die on.
(And yes, it’s a Fishman building).
@PanasonicDX4500
I actually got to eat in the Eagles cafeteria back when I rotated at the Rothman Orthopedic office on site back when I was in school.
The employee deal was $5 for all the food you could fit inside one of those clear 12x12 containers and still close the lid.
I keep seeing the rumor that Cristina Pacione-Zayas would be Brandon Johnson's pick to replace Martinez at CPS, and it would be:
1. the stupidest fucking idea both logistically and politically
2. totally believable given BJ's propensity to pick only from his inner circle.
“Remember to speak in vague platitudes and don’t get flustered when people ask why you’re creating an unaccountable slush fund run by the people who’ve been dishing out $$$ to GardaWorld and Favorite Healthcare Staffing.”
It is sort of funny how bad the right side of Chicago politics is at doing politics.
All the real estate types on here trying to make complicated arguments about how BCH will raise rents, etc…
But the obvious attack line is that it’s just a slush fund for an unpopular mayor!
i have canvassed and campaigned for
#BringChicagoHome
. i am on the CTU Housing Committee. here's why i must vote "no" on BCH 🧵:
-my work throughout has been in the hope that BCH monies and priorities will also be extended to new arrivals. this is not the case and when (cont)
Oh no some teens are loitering at (*checks notes*) the public beach -- let's have a platoon of cops perform illegal searches in case they have a beer or some weed.
.
@CDRosa
tells me Biden reduced turnout: “I think if we had had more exciting candidates at the top of the ballot, a more exciting race, I think we would have seen higher turnout. I think if Bernie Sanders had been on the ballot, Bring Chicago Home would have carried the day.”
$81 million in a day.
I just want you to imagine 81 million dollars of mutual aid circulating today instead. Or 81 million dollars to grassroots efforts in housing justice, environment, etc.
Here's how the votes shook out for the mostly symbolic SoundThinking (aka ShotSpotter) contract renewal ordinance. It's another one for the "not every map is the same map" file. Alderwoman Taylor ducking the vote is notable.
With Bruce Rauner pretty much disgraced and JB popular and competent, you’d figure the IPI would be a laughingstock, but Johnson, Potter, and Davis Gates keep throwing hanging sliders over the plate for this guy to hit.
“The state didn’t communicate the guidelines”
Translated to “No one in my office bothered to look them up before signing away tens of millions in public funds.”
Mayor Johnson said earlier the state didn’t communicate guidelines on assessing migrant camp.
Gov spox responds: “while the City might be comfortable placing asylum seekers on a site where toxins are present without a full understanding of whether it is safe, the State is not”
@CaralhoPhilly
@ArmandDoma
Well if you actually attain power, you end up having a real job with actual responsibilities, and then you’re Brandon Johnson.
This idea that zoning reform should only apply to subsidized housing for the poorest tenants, and that less-expensive market rate housing for the middle class should be subjected to endless discretionary process is a big reason why SF doesn’t have a middle class anymore.
“Big Ten Bros or Boystown Gays: which group are the indigenous inhabitants of Lakeview?” - the greatest thread in the history of forums, locked by a moderator after 12,239 pages of heated debate,
dear fucking lord, every once in a while i remember there are *straights* that live in lakeview 😭😭😭
there was a fucking party in my building to watch the iowa northwestern game todayyyyyy
@seaweedanxiety
She missed that we already did the “Lollapalooza is going to kill thousands” back in 2021 and the weirdos were trying to blame Lori Lightfoot for it.
NOT SAFE: The new bike lanes on Belmont Avenue in Chicago are a complete disaster. They are unsafe for cars, pedestrians, & bikes at a cost of millions of dollars. They created more traffic by making Belmont one lane. They encourage bikes to pass on the right which is completely
Activists with idea that BCH was going to do anything at all to stop “gentrification” in the single family home market is…umm…
Really not helping the “no” argument that no one actually had a plan for the funds.
This is why BRING CHICAGO HOME shouldve won if u want a working class Chicago to continue to exist. These are ridiculous prices & driver for gentrification. West of Western was considered “the hood” as recently as the 2010s.
This is disgusting.
Chinatown precincts went *big* for Vallas. Asian voters are a small bloc in this city, but CTU's attitude toward them straddles the line between dismissal and full-blown antagonism.
It's actually not that complicated: America is a cruel country where many people believe that homeless people deserve their situation and a majority of voters would prefer not to spend tax dollars on improving their lives.
@doctor_cabral
@milesjonesuk
Bro, you are a few years away from a guaranteed six figure income for the rest of your career and Biden fixed it so you can get your debt written off as PSLF.
Chicago City Council speaks on the White Sox eyeing The 78: Ald. Pat Dowell, whose 3rd ward includes the site, confirmed the developer wants to discuss a new Sox stadium, while Ald. Nicole Lee, 11th, said she remains focused on keeping the Sox in her Bridgeport ward
I’ve always been cold toward vouchers as an effective policy, but the loudest opponents against them are always people who’d never in a million years send their kids to a neighborhood Philly public high school, but believe that poor families should be stuck with that choice.
I mean, he’s not wrong.
Whoever decided to have him coming out trying to sound like Elizabeth Warren is the type of person who likes Elizabeth Warren, and therefore should never be taken seriously.
@LynnBecker
Evanston residents feeling entitled to all the benefits of living next to a world class university with none of the drawbacks. A tale as old as time.
Yes, yes, you were in your 20s in 2008. You’re very edgy. Complaining about change will shield you from your own aging irrelevance and make you feel cool again.
@JimA21754232
The 606 is a perfectly pleasurable route to take on a bike, and complaining that you have to contain your speed to a safe level just makes you look like an inconsiderate ass.
In Chicago, the school district is still paying $200 million per year to lending institutions for loans that JP Morgan Chase, among others, sold and earned 9.5% profit or $110 million in the first year alone.
Why am I suspicious that the vandalization of
#BuckinghamFountain
is a False-Flag operation?
Just look at the responses to the story on social media
Do you really believe pro-Palestinian protest leaders would damage their message in this way?
Intentional or not, it was a fortuitous choice by Brandon Johnson to select a guy without any kids to lead the school board considering the number of vocal education activists who keep getting outed for sending their kids to non-CPS schools.
