Doing translation edits for @KodanshaUSA . Simple advice for young translators: minimize AND and BUT at the beginning of sentences, and go easy on the JUST and ACTUALLY and REALLY, and JUST NOW. I know they’re in the Japanese, but they’re noise in English if not used sparingly.

Wow, Elfquest is legit good! Wish I hadn't ignored it when I was a kid. I want to know more about Wendy Pini's manga influences. I want to see what manga she bought in the 70s and 80s. Frank Miller really hogs the spotlight in terms of early manga-influenced American comics.

When writing history, "the first of" "the original" "the only" "never" "no connection" rarely holds up in the long-run. Best to defer to "that I know of" "first known" "one of the earliest" etc, even if it's wordy and timid. Composing an IG post on my own recent f'ups on this.

As Red Flowers @DandQ makes its way out into the world, I'm already seeing a few "Tsuge Yoshiharu is Japan's Robert Crumb"-type taglines in reviews. Was hoping this wouldn't happen. It's so misleading on so many levels.

Out this fall: Inoue Kazuo’s Bat Kid (1947-49), the first major baseball manga in Japan. Will include a copiously illustrated essay by me, and published by Bubbles. More info here:

I recently turned down an offer to teach a class on anime. I know too little and the prep time would've been inordinate. Anime's just not my thing. Since I work on manga, people think that's a contradiction. But not to me. I love baroquely stylized live action movies though.

Suspiria: my favorite movie ever. First saw it as kid growing up in Japan in the 1980s, where you could find everything and anything in video stores, and they'd let you rent anything regardless of your age, except porn.

Fascinated by Masaoka Kenzo's Animation Lecture Notes 政岡憲三動画講義録, but not sure exactly how to use them in my essay about Fukui Eiichi, who worked under Masaoka in the postwar 40s before turning to manga:

If anyone doubts the social impact of shonen manga, my 9 yr old stepson has been reading Fire Force for 2 days and today “floozy” and “nude anime girls” showed up on his search history. Also “do stegosaurus have brains in their butts,” so can’t blame everything on shonen manga.

Started Yukimura Makoto's Vinland Saga @KodanshaManga . So far so good! God bless public libraries and their never-big-enough manga budget. Without them, I'd have to resort to scanlations to pretend like I know something about mainstream manga of the past 30 years.

Someone asked at my lecture about Tezuka and Kirby ever meeting. I didn’t know, but apparently they did, see below. Forwarded by Michael Avolio.

For every 100 tweets I read by white people complaining about being discriminated against in Japan, I see maybe 1 about how being white probably got them that job in Japan and how much privilege accrues to them because of their race.

Of the nine or so manga translations I have in the pipeline, three and potentially four will probably have to be shrink-wrapped. Feel free to guess what they are, though I will neither confirm nor deny.

We Still Here @marclamonthill . Fantastic pithy synthesis of the past year in theoretical terms. His book on racism in the police and legal system, Nobody (2017), is also highly recommended.

Really enjoying Yeong-Shin Ma’s Moms @DandQ translated by @JanetHong333 . Is it just me, or does the drawing (the cover not a good example) have an Ebisu Yoshikazu vibe to it?

When I first got into contemporary Japanese culture in my 20s in the late 90s, I remember Okazaki Kyoko being prominent even in the art world. She was a central figure in that wider Neo-Pop moment before it got reduced to Murakami Takashi's Superflat.

Just about a half of Kyoko Okazaki's works. River's Edge was released in the late phase of her career. She was aware of the dark side of the happy '80s culture from the beginning, but even such happiness disappered in this era. The word "survival" explains River's Edge well.

Another reason why I’m about a year away from staring my own publisher. I got the skills, I got the connections, just need to commit time to learning book production. I’d make better sense for income, but probably destroy me as a scholar.

it's funny sometimes to listen to people talk about the economics of small press publishing because the costs for translated work, especially translated comics & manga etc are so wildly different (more expensive relatively) versus stuff that's already done in English originally..

For people asking if Kamui-den hasn't already been published in English: no, not the original Garo series from 1964-71. Viz did part of Kamui gaiden from the 80s. Details here:
