In a sense, Harenchi Gakuen's influence is bigger than that of Devilman. Manga for kids gained erotic and even pornographic elements because of that manga. It's more than the "ecchi" genre. It changed the whole shonen manga.

Gundam Hathaway did this very well. Messer is great, needless to say, and Penelope is fantastic. Mecha are depicted as kaiju in that film. Sense of size, weight, light, sound effects, etc. Each element contributes to characterization of MS. They're unforgettable.

Anime shifted to otaku around 1985 because of mecha anime's failures and some bankruptcy. After that, anime split into mainstream/ adaptations of popular manga and niche OVA for nerds. In the '90s, NGE and some other anime succeeded by airing the latter type in the former media.

@out_sall Finally someone who gets it. It was pretty much the symptom of the anime industry shifting it's focus to otaku during the late 2000s and early 2010s due to the declining birthrate. Contrary to weeb opinion, otaku weren't originally the primary audience for anime.

I loved Togashi's manga not because he's the originator of something or his manga are deeper than others. His manga were much more chinibyo and edgelord by the old standard. He was so good at picking phrases and visuals that hype up teenagers.

Nadia's Island arc was a thing in NHK's initial plan. Anno's early plot memo includes it as well. They knew their production power wouldn't be able to support the long-running series, so they intended to leave the whole arc to the Korean subcontractor from the beginning.
