Seeing as Twitter is dying itโs hot-take time: I think allowing same-sex marriage in the CofE will have almost no measurably positive impact on church growth and attendance, but we should do it anyway because itโs a justice issue not a growth tactic.

This morning my appointment as Priest-in-Charge of St Andrewโs Church in
@diostalbans
has been announced. My family & I are delighted to be moving back Luton in the early summer and serving this diverse and dynamic parish. Iโm so excited for this next step! /1
And so did St. Francis give unto the Wolf of Gubbio a banana, and no more grandmas were eaten that day. And lo did he proclaim, โThis story will be retold in song for generations to comeโ.

What even is the CofE anymore? Like - what's the point in having an ecclesiology, a theology of the Eucharist, a diocese, disciplinary structures, etc etc? Are we just in a free for all now, or do the rules only apply to some and not to others? This is getting beyond ridiculous.
Curates looking for first incumbencies often tell me that many of the jobs on offer are now 0.5 or less. If I've learned one thing from my first year as a 0.5 incumbent, it's that it's impossible to have the cure of souls part-time, especially in a parish with so many needs. /1
One year an incumbent today! It has been a steep learning curve, and after a season of putting my shoulder to the task to get things moving, I'm trying to slow down a little for the summer. For curates about to embark on their first incumbency, below are a few things I've learned
What a thing to hold in these tired hands that have laid countless bricks, thrown punches, & held the sacred mysteries of God. My mind immediately returns to my year 7 teacher making me stand at the front of class while tearing up my work book because the writing was so bad. ๐ฅฒ

I would suggest that engaging fully with the police investigation and taking a step back from the limelight would be behaviour in keeping with repentance in this situation - now is not the time to be a Christian โinfluencerโ, neither is this wise for a recent convert.
Some exciting news, yesterday I signed contracts with

A young lady in our team had 3 different guys tell her โgod wants us to get marriedโ in the space of a week. She told me and my pal John about this in tears. John had just come out of juvie before joining YWAM, I spent the rest of the day trying to stop him beating up the 3 guys
I canโt be the only CofE leader finding an increasing proportion of my emotional and mental energy drained by the slow burn of working in an institution dying from its own fecklessness and ruthlessness. If Iโm the only one Iโll shut up?

I work advising organisations in crisis. I can see that the CofE is structurally unable to deal with the crises it faces. It moves too slowly, it's too afraid of causing offence & it won't grasp the nettle. I don't think it can even tell if it is in crisis. Spoiler alert: it is.
In the cooler months (+funerals etc) I wear doc martens polished to a mirror shine, in the summer smart-ish sandles. As I said in a lecture at theological college - remember that what is a โcultural symbol of respectabilityโ to some is a symbol of bourgeoisie oppression to others
It's hard to describe the joy and impact on my wellbeing of moving to a house where I'm surrounded by trees and wildlife (even in the midst of Luton's post-industrial sprawl). Class struggle must involve equal access to good housing and natural beauty. Where we live shapes us.

Former bricklayer here - some might be interested to know that English brick sizes pre-metricisation were designed to fit imperial measurements - 4 courses high = 1ft, 4 bricks length = 3 ft. Post metricisation these were reduced to 4 courses - 300mm, 4 long = 900mm. /1

While I respect Shane, and am grateful for his friendship with +Justin, the reality is - ABofC doesnโt need to travel 1000s of miles to see radical Christianity, many are living it in the UK and CofE, while struggling with lack of funding and feeling a lack of support

This is all very troubling. If, as the article suggests, the Church Revitalisation Trust (beneficiaries of ยฃ50m central funding) are leading moves to split the church then there needs to be a serious response with serious consequences.
โRather than waiting for disgruntled churches to contact the CEEC and enquire about the financial and oversight arrangements now being developed separately from normal C of E practice, there is a proactive campaign seeking to recruit churches to this split. A proactive campaign

How can the CPAS be a resource to the Church of England when it openly endorses homophobia? This is not an affirmation of human sexuality. If anything it is a strategic attempt to condemn, regulate and suppress LGBTQI+ desire.

Pondering the emotional weight of incumbency & the cure of souls as look out of my office window during morning prayer & meditation. Is there an informal network of learning/reflective practice among modern/liberal/anglo-catholic incumbents? Don't want to walk this journey alone
Having been a lay pioneer minister for a number of years before training for ordination, I can tell you with some certainty that this simply not true. The resourcing of pioneer ministry is minuscule compared to the parish, and the two should not be forced into a binary /1

Friends! Very random request - I am looking for an Anvil to go in our Peace Garden in Luton as part of this project, it will be used to turn amnestied knives into garden tools. I have a small budget for this, and can pickup within reasonable distance of Luton
The CofE is a funny old beast, but despite the many struggles I love my 'job' & my local church and community.
Sometimes as a working-class socialist priest with a passion for liberation, justice & lgbtq+ rights, the CofE drives me to despair, and this has been one of those weeks
Likewise to Anglicans - if your discipleship/ministry experience etc scheme is for โyoung professionalsโ you are sending the message that working class people are not worthy to join, which is anathema to the Gospel of Jesus of Nazareth
Why are Catholic institutions running courses for 'young professionals'. Do young people who work in shops or factories, or who are sick or unemployed, not get to discuss the faith?
What Iโve learned from doing liberation theology with siblings from across the world - you need to start listening when people critique identity politics - because it was always going to end up with people in positions of power claiming to speak for the โvoicelessโ
Schism.
A total and complete disgrace. Homophobia dressed in theology - hate splattered with the lipstick of love and all made up in the uniform of unity.
Shame on you, building your identity on the backs of LGBTQIA people.
Shame on you.
Some people write us off as a festival that believes anything it wants to. Most of those people havenโt actually been of course. But letโs put that gently to one side. If those people did come to Greenbelt to see for themselves, what would they *actually* find? ๐งต
White Christian leaders: If your response to the continued violent legacy of colonialism and chattel slavery is anything other than disgust and repentance in sackcloth and ashes - yโall need to get right with God. Away with your nostalgia for the empire of Anti-Christ.
This cannot be allowed to happen:
โWith Mike now resigned, I'm worried that he's viewed as a single "bad apple", and those who failed to hold him to account will be reinstated or allowed to continue in positions of power, and the wider Church fails to learn their lessons.โ
I would really appreciate your prayers as I begin the first draft of my MA dissertation. On this feast day of saints Cyril and Methodius, pioneers of 'doing Christianity' in the vernacular, I hope to make a small contribution to 'doing mission' on the outside edges of empire.
