Last time NYC school budgets cut to this extent was 2007-2008 during Great Recession. Unacceptable then but even more now given city budget in surplus, billions in reserve, more state Ed funds & nearly $5B in unspent federal stimulus funds for our schools. Could be unprecedented.
Despite massive budget cuts, Eric Adams has 293 'special assistants' accountable only to him, costing taxpayers $24.3M. 85 earn >$100K; 13 more than $200K.
When we talk about overcrowded NYC schools this is what we mean. Unacceptable and inhumane even in “normal” non-pandemic times. Midwood HS H/t

Wow. When Vallas was CEO of Chicago PS he issued $666M in payday loan bonds - 3X more expensive than regular bonds, costing $1B more in interest- almost exactly same as budget shortfall Rahm Emanuel used to justify closing 50 Chicago schools 10 yrs ago.

To reach & teach students effectively, teachers must forge a human connection w/them. But understaffed & overworked many simply have no time to show students that they see, hear & care about them. Survival mode doesn’t allow room for relationship building.
