on receiving the 2023-24 Marsal School Alumni Awards.
To everything, there is a season. This is a season of change, as I share with you some news. I have accepted an opportunity to return home to Michigan to serve as Provost of Western Michigan University, effective Jan. 4, 2023.
If I was USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington I would be reevaluating joining the

about to get really ugly. Real fast. If Iβm

Iβm also getting nervous.
After the diversity staff and faculty firing news from UT Austin. Iβm thinking about telling the story of my departure from

for the first time.
I am so honored to be appointed today to the Education World Congress by the National Education Association. The World Congress is the governing body of Education International, of which NEA is a member. The Congress will meet in Bangkok, Thailand in Julyβ¦
Our classrooms are where the most vigorous debates should occur. They shouldnβt be cancelled by anti-free speech advocates. Education is the compass of our democracy and we lose our way when government micromanages patriotic and scholarly examinations of history by students.
I am so grateful for this! βThe commission of Kentucky Colonel is the highest title of honor bestowed by the Governor of Kentucky. It is recognition of an individualβs noteworthy accomplishments and outstanding service to our community, state, and nation.β
In our Kentucky county K-12 teachers are nearly finished with first vaccination round. We are moving on to 1c which will include front line educators and staff in the university.
Here is a group of photo of Charter School Partners, a group that has received hundreds of thousands taxpayer dollars to manage charters that serve students of color in Michigan. Notice anything?

Itβs a travesty that the
@UNC
trustees denied her tenure. Itβs a dangerous precedent to allow politics to cancel and deny global examinations of race, racism and communities of color by academics and the media.

Itβs an incredible honor to even be mentioned for this role. I greatly enjoy leading and serving the 3,000 students faculty and staff of the

Slept in the basement last night. Everything ok here. Prayers go out those impacted by the tornados. We are hearing about damage to schools and much more. Once we know some avenues of assistance I will share.
Heartbroken to share that Sydney, my Silky Terrier, passed away today after a tough 24 hours. He was 18, just 2 months shy of 19. From my first days as an assistant professor at UT Austin, he's been by my side. You'll be deeply missed. Until we meet again in heaven. π

Heroes and heroines only exist if there is a villain.
#Covid19
is that villian. Gives me tears knowing educators have risked so much in 2020 for children. They are real superheroes in our midst a pandemic. Thank you to our teachers who are steadfast for our communities worldwide.
I am hearing from districts that COVID is impacting attendance so much right now that they couldn't afford to be open without recovery money due to the way schools are currently funded. Another reason we should fund public schools based on populations of students in an area.

@SouthwestAir
entire computer system just went down. Looks like everything not in air is cancelled. For all cancellations they are putting people out to gates where 800 people are waiting. This is not weather, itβs bad operations.

So far 7th try is ok. But who knows
I am so incredibly proud of my student Joseph Barry! He came with me from

and he successfully defended his

Access to education for the historically underserved without a social justice lens, without knowledge of history, of a racialize society results in training of young people who will continue to reproduce a marginalizing system.
Anyone want to argue that racism doesn't exist? Or that we live in a post-racial society? Or that we don't need critical examinations of race in schools (K-12 and Higher Education)?
