In Mijikenda culture, twins & mothers to twins were revered for their 'healing' ability. My mother & her brother (twins) as kids in Kilifi in the 1950s occasionally had people with sprained wrists & ankles visiting their home to have them place their hands on the sprained areas.

'When an old person dies, a library burns to the ground'. My maternal grandma Irene Muhache Mumba passed on today at age 100. Wife to Japhet B. Mumba of this quoted thread. She spoke Kikuyu, learnt from her education in Kabete. Her story & that of early education are intertwined.

Takaungu. A 1767 mosque & a Mazrui-era cannon just next to it, strategically placed to blast any rival ship. Life is transient. These days, the residents use the cannon to 'echo' fireworks during New Year celebrations. Fireworks lit, quickly thrown in the cannon & boom! #History

Gastronomy in Holili, in the land of Mama Samia🇹🇿, where bananas are a more popular accompaniment to meat dishes than sima/ugali. Also, where upon noticing my Pwani Tribune t-shirt, @Surveyor_001 stopped me for a chat, a random and great meet-up over the border. #Tanzania

As great as Pele was, some good old Kenyan disappointment was served in 1976. The national team failed to appear at his youth football clinic as anticipated. With KFF Chairman Matiba blaming Pepsi (tour sponsors) for failing to liaise well with the Federation. Source: Reuters

US President Gerald Ford responded on October 20th 1976 saying "We are pursuing arrangements to fulfill your request for a fly-past on Jamhuri Day...". Navy ship USS Guam arrived in Mombasa with the jets. Her crew formed 'Kenya 76' on the flight deck (seen in the 2nd photo).

In Jilore, in the vicinity of Arabuko Sokoke forest, kids as young as 9 sell chinolo at Ksh. 20 a piece. Chinolo is traditional banana bread...ripe bananas whipped into a paste together with maize flour, covered in banana leaves & left to simmer in a pot. I'm glad to indulge.

It's a blessing to be in the ancient fishing village of Kipini, on the boundary of Tana River & Lamu. Residents here pass as natives of either of the 2 Counties. I'm learning boat-making at Iqbal's boatyard. A short thread on Kipini.

Before we even get to revolution, what is this warrior blood you speak of that you say is deficient in Coast region people? This is why learning history is important. The Taita were already in an armed resistance against the British in the 1890s, under Mwangeka wa Malowa. Someni.
