Loving
#cpconf2024
and wanted to share our new preprint 'Major depression symptom severity associations with willingness to exert effort and patch foraging strategy'
AND that the Effort Foraging Task paper is open access! 🧵
Allow me to reintroduce myself - my name is DR. Laura Ana Bustamante 👋🏽. Here I am being hooded by
@nathanieldaw
🤙🏽😛🤙🏽. Today I’m coming at you with a fresh new website [] on the advocacy page you’ll find a statement I shared at my dissertation defense...
Friends I’m on the
#job
market! My research aims to enhance
#CognitiveControl
by studying: 1) what mechanisms underlie willingness to exert cognitive effort? 2) how is willingness to exert effort affected in psychiatric
#disability
? 3) how to increase willingness to exert effort?
I gave a
@PrincetonNeuro
dept seminar today! I’d seen so many A+ neuroscientists present there that I got wayy wrapped up preparing. My eureka was when I booked a
#massage
for the night before. I felt chill so the talk was easy breezy. Here’s me cheesin’ before
#selfcare
Absolutely loving Dublin 🇮🇪🍀and excited to present today at
#cpc2023
on results from the Effort Foraging Task “Anxiety in Major Depression associated with increased willingness to exert cognitive, but not physical effort”, come say hello at poster 12! 👋
Last but not least, I’m on the market for professor jobs in
#computationalpsychiatry
this year, so please let me know of any opportunities within departments looking to grow in this outstanding field!!
#cpconf2023
Underexerting cognitive control is ubiquitous, but can we also train people to overexert control? Find out in our paper Learning to Overexert Cognitive Control in a Stroop Task [] with

Headed home from
#cpconf2023
feeling lucky 🍀 to have such incredible colleagues. Had a very engaging poster presenter session & discussions about cutting edge science including

perspectives at the heart of the science… 🧵
Back home from my first
@SOBP
#SOBP2023
meeting & buzzing with new insights and ideas, a highlight was running into my former
@PrincetonNeuro
summer mentee
@ConnorLawhead
& learning he got into grad school! Another was coming home to my apartment which I cleaned before I left 😂
Alright tweeps, teach me the hidden curriculum 📖, where should I go looking for professor jobs in psychology/neuroscience? 🤓 (bonus for computational psychiatry specific!) I’ve heard about the
@chronicle
of higher ed, what else do we got? 🙏🏽

Workshop day for
#cogsci2020
done! I was lucky enough to catch all the amazing speakers from the

session.
I'd like to say I came away with an accurate image of how I think all the attendees' brains will look like over the next few days, but I'll let you decide
while talking to my 96yo abuela about current events, she bursts into song "hay que vivir el momento feliz, y hay que gozar lo que puedas gozar, porque sacando la cuenta en total, la vida es un sueño de felicidad". leave it to abuela isa to alleviate all my stress in 20 seconds!
Just wrapped up a fantastic keynote

@DrNeblett
on conceptualizing

Thinking about this ‘branding’ idea being applied to people who are out & vocal about diagnoses/neurodivergence & it brought me back to part of my dissertation acknowledgments, written on the beach in Cyprus in the weeks leading up to publicly coming out as

@BBCNews
‘Adherence to antidepressants is significantly associated with a corresponding decrease in the risk of mortality, controlling for relevant covariates.’ .
Looking for a recommendation for a good Stan tutorial for beginners in stan, who already have good understanding of the theory and good practice with model fitting. Major bonus if it's in python, but interested in R or Matlab too.
so hype for the

This! And legally disability status for Americans w Disabilities Act is in reference to your untreated/unsupported state, even if you are well. You still deserve all the support to keep you well, and you can be disabled and thriving! These labels are all a personal choice ofc 🫶🏼
if you can’t function without your medication you are disabled that includes mental health you are not “appropriating” a label or taking up space where you don’t belong
@blindandb0ujee
I appreciate this post and agree disabled is preferable -- also bringing these services into the fold of disability rights... but.. when I talk to professionals who work with children they seem resistant to labeling children as disabled.. anyone have thoughts/responses to this?
In the acknowledgments I talk about my journey to being

including inspiration from

justice & philosopher
#simoneweil
. Theres also a fun story on how learning

In the past I had a ‘psychiatric’ event that I avoided thinking about & felt fearful of. Recently my therapist helped me connect how it was grounded in my life experiences and what I was processing at the time. Fear was deflated & replaced w gratitude for the insights gleaned 🙏🏽
I had the pleasure of coming onto the podcast
@UnstandardizedE
to speak with
@JPBGerald
about cognitive effort motivation as related to neurodivergence. The conversation is a fun blend of research, lived experience, and advocacy, check it out!
@srp_science
let’s reflect on the term ‘healthy controls’ in
#clinical
#psych
research. What makes a person ‘
#healthy
’ versus ‘
#unhealthy
’? There are so many dimensions of health, many of which are socially constructed, and few of which are observed in our research…
In this colorful study we explored how people learn when it’s valuable to exert control and how they transfer what they've learned. Here’s a cartoon I made to explain an example of overexerting control due to maladaptive transfer learning!
Seeing DR.
@szorowi1
dissertation talk blew me out of the water 🤯 so many contributions for one PhD, each approached w thoughtful clever interrogation of the topic of study. Keep an eye out for the publications 👀 and check out the open source tools Dr. Z has already released 👏

my (limited) understanding of DBT is that a benefit was it was developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan who has lived experience, but it (and other behavioral therapites) are critiqued by disabled people for many reasons ()
Great article with innovative suggestions! Sharing this helpful graphic from
@sonnyjaneishere
(livedexperienceeducator on IG) to highlight
#neurodivergent
groups not explicitly named (the article gestured to other groups but only named the top of the iceberg), & the list goes on!
Despite significant strides in making psychology more open and accessible to all, one group seems to be left behind: Where are the neurodivergent scholars and research participants?
I’m sick of people using neurodiversity and neurodivergent interchangeably so I’ve made a Neurodivergent Pride Day which you can learn more about here:

I think we could have more therapists to meet demand if they were much better paid, the therapists in my life go into debt for school and are paid very poorly considering their expertise and the deep emotional labor they gift
@amitaishenhav
@ShenhavLab
Amitai, your mentorship has meant so much to me. Since your postdoc I’ve long admired how you create community. You’ve cultivated a great lab culture and I love being an honorary member. I’m moved to hear this fantastic news! Sincerely, your *first* grad student (according to me)
@IndigoDaya
Thanks for your tweet.. the push back is really interesting to me when everything you said is extremely well documented time and again all throughout history.. please if you can’t sit with this message read more psychiatric survivors.. we need non-carceral mental healthcare now!
😱The percentage of
@NIH
grant applicants with PIs reporting a disability significantly declined from 1.9% in 2008, to 1.2% in 2018 (p<0.001). Overall grant success rates differed by disability status (27.2% for those reporting disability vs 29.7% in those reporting no disability
This is a remarkable opportunity to begin to address the ableism and lack of accessibility in science and creates a roadmap for addressing the underrepresentation of disabled researchers, as <2% of funded NIH researchers report being disabled

my hope to “cultivate joy, self-actualization, self-determination, and acceptance for neurodivergent people. This begins with claiming these things for myself.” Instead of accusing people of ‘branding’ let’s celebrate people breaking their silence and challenging neuronorms! 🫶🏼
@CaraLisette
I appreciate you bringing this up! There needs to be room for people to choose with *full informed consent* whether or not to take meds, whichever choice is right for the individual is valid should not be shamed. To me autonomy is key, it’s not about being pro or against meds

I'm taking a massive leap of faith into 2024!
My account has always been anonymous. I wanted to protect myself from any repercussions from speaking up about my journey with mental illness.
I was ashamed at times.
BUT
I am not ashamed any more!
This is me and I have bipolar 👋

So agreed especially if you get in a routine with buying similar items it becomes very efficient to make the cart. One thing I do to make it more affordable is the pickup option (rather than delivery).
@justin_garson
@christophlane
@PsychToday
Yes! This gets at my current feeling about psychiatry which is that opt in/voluntary engagement is valuable but there needs to be real safe guarded means of opting out, I see disability rights/justice & neurodiversity frameworks as generating those alternative ways
@robwipond
thanks for taking on such an important and under appreciated topic! As someone who’s been on the non-consenting side of things, it might be too difficult for me to read but I wish well-meaning ppl understood the choice they are making when they involuntarily hospitalize another
@wendyluwrites
@nytimes
An interesting element for mental disabilities (speaking for myself at least, I think for many) is that stress is something I have to avoid for my health, but it’s difficult to make that problem concrete. I do think there are an abundance of solutions but certainly a challenge
I gave a 90 minute talk on the Effort Foraging Task applications in large online, depression & tCDS. Was met w many excellent questions & had an amazing time talking w their team including Drs.
@marion_rouault
, Mathias Pessiglione, Jean Daunizeau &Will Hopper about topics such as
Although the subjective experience of effort is ubiquitous, the processes underlying effort-based decision making are not fully understood, including the relationship between individual differences in willingness to exert cognitive and physical effort.
@catgyoung
I wanted to be a neuroscientist since I was 18 and made most of my decisions around that, and now I am! Many of the details would be very surprising tho 😂
We found that individual differences in cognitive and physical effort costs were positively correlated (r=0.55), suggesting that these are perceived and processed in common terms across different domains.
