Disabled people are NOT A BURDEN.
Disabled people are NOT A BURDEN.
Disabled people are NOT A BURDEN.
Disabled people are NOT A BURDEN.
If you are
#disabled

Day 8 of having RSV: I got diagnosed with pneumonia today. Iโm not doing great (physically or emotionally), so any kind words would be appreciated ๐
@whatchidid
What the actual fuck. It would be one thing if they were canceling the whole fair, but instead theyโre specifically discriminating against you because of your race. This is not okay.
In 1999, Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote the majority opinion for the Olmstead case, declaring that people with disabilities have the right to live in their own communities rather in institutions.
Brb leaving to go cry again.
Omg I am full of emotions tonight ๐ญ Biden recognized disability in his speech, and then
@jaketapper
spoke AT LENGTH about this on
@CNN
!!! He talked about the power of disabled voters & directed viewers to
#CripTheVote
.
This is such a rare moment. Is this even real life?!
@jaketapper
Here's the clip
Thanks again to Jake for bringing this up. I look forward to Biden, Jake, and the world paying more attention to the needs of the disabled community. Thank you for recognizing our fight
And thanks to my friend Dali for getting the clip
So a former Fox News contributor tweeted at me and now my mentions are blowing up. Just so we're clear: I'm fully vaccinated. I just don't want face masks to be stigmatized and I don't want disabled people to be left behind in this pandemic. Please stop harassing me.
In light of
#StephenHawking
's death, here are a few reminders for journalists:
-AVOID subjective language in describing his disability (e.g. "suffered from ALS," "bound to a wheelchair")
-TALK about his scientific contributions
-DON'T turn his achievements into inspiration porn
Friendly reminder: Everyoneโs experience with disability is different. Donโt make assumptions about how someone feels!
A few weeks ago, I met this woman whose mother had a tracheostomy tube for decades like me. At first I got excited since I rarely meet others with trach tubes.
I love that news outlets are celebrating the LGBTQ and BIPOC people who have been elected โ and reelected! โ to Congress. I also wish they'd acknowledge the
#disabled
people who are now lawmakers too. It's painful to see disability get erased from election coverage.
#CripTheVote
So excited that I'll be editing
@nytimeswell
for the next few months, starting today! I published my first
@nytimes
article back in December 2016, and it was a story for the Well desk about dating with a disability. It all comes full circle ๐ฅน๐
Please don't celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month unless your company is willing to do the actual work of hiring, supporting, and retaining workers with disabilities. We're more than a cute banner.
hi some friendly reminders:
when disabled people point out ableism, LISTEN TO THEM.
when
#disabled
people share a grievance, BELIEVE THEM.
when disabled people aren't represented at the table, GIVE THEM A SEAT.
we deserve to be respected & treated like the human beings we are.
Spotted this sign over the weekend in Brooklyn ๐๐ผ
โDear entertainment industry,
Thereโs no diversity, equity & inclusion without disability.โ
PSA to parents with
#disabled
kids: If you see a call-out for stories about what itโs like living with a disability, THATโS NOT FOR YOU. Please donโt take up space that should be given to someone whoโs actually disabled. Iโve seen this so many times but no more. Not this month.
โจ Some personal news โจ
I can't believe I'm saying this, but next Tuesday will be my last day at
@HuffPost
. In May I'll be joining
@NYTimes
as a senior staff editor on the Flexible Editing desk. I'm so excited for this next chapter, but first I want to reflect on my time at HP.
After HuffPost laid off more than 40 of my beloved colleagues last year, I gave them a workshop on freelancing so they had the tools & knowledge to get started. If you were laid off this week & you're interested in a similar free workshop, DM me & I'll set one up (please RT)!
Even if you personally are not worried about the
#coronavirus
or think you're healthy enough to withstand any symptoms, please take precautions anyway for the sake of elderly folks & people with disabilities. We don't have the luxury of taking chances when it comes to our health.
My name is Wendy, and I have vocal cord paralysis and wear a tracheostomy tube to help me breathe. My life matters, and the lives of all
#disabled
, immunocompromised and elderly people matter. Please think of us before you go out to a bar.
#HighRiskCovid19
#SocialDistancing
Hereโs what I try to remind myself: Disabled people shouldnโt have to carry the responsibility of explaining how others should behave, though we often do. We deserve to have breaks, to set boundaries, to decide how much or how little we give to others.
Looks like
@nytimes
is hiring an accessibility editor! The editor would make sure all stories (including interactive & visual elements) meet accessibility standards & would advocate for better accessibility across the newsroom.
#DisCo
, check it out:
For a
@nytimes
story, I'm looking to speak with disabled workers about their experiences requesting accommodations. What are the workplace barriers to accessibility? What could be better? My DMs are open (for the first time in years!) or email wendyluwrites

NEW: Over the last few months, I've spoken to several doctors with disabilities about the discrimination they've faced & how it's intertwined with the culture of ableism & perfection that permeates the world of medicine. Read my story for
@huffpost
here:
Yikes omg first of all, this man shouldn't have had to resort to building his *own* elevator in the first place. Second, we need better coverage than this โ inaccessible housing is the problem here, NOT his disabilities.
CDC's new recommendation around not wearing masks is giving me major flashbacks to early last year when masking was discouraged & Asian Americans like me struggled between choosing safety from COVID and safety from stigma. I'd really like to not go back to that, thanks.
Here it is! After dozens of drafts over the course of two years, my story on why it's so difficult for
#disabled
actors, screenwriters & other artists to break into the entertainment industry is out, ft.
@DannyWoodburn
@maysoonzayid
@dominickevans
& more:
She looked so convinced that Iโd be happier without my disability that it did not register how uncomfortable I felt. I said thanks, forced a smile and moved on. For a while, I regretted not sticking up for myself more. Even after 30 years, moments like these still make me freeze.
It's weird seeing all these posts celebrating "yay! no more masks!" What about disabled & immunocompromised ppl who don't feel comfortable being around non-maskers? And Asians who want to wear masks without GAF since it's literally NOT A BIG DEAL in many other countries!!!
This is how ALL protests should be. Any social justice movement that supports
#BLM
*must* include Black disabled lives. Systemic oppression is intersectional, and we can't afford to leave anyone out. (Also, digital protests are just as valid!)
#BlackDisabledLivesMatter
A protest intended to be more accessible for people of all abilities is starting to move from Veterans Park in Milwaukee. There are sign language interpreters and rest stops with medics and supplies.
It is physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting to be a
#disabled
person in an abled world. Sending love and solidarity to all of my disabled friends out there today and every day.
As a disabled journalist, I know what it's like to spend months & months getting a newsroom's leadership on board with avoiding ableist language & telling disability stories that matter. The emotional labor takes a toll. I wish this
@APStylebook
guidance had existed back then.
Don't use words that suggest pity, such as afflicted with, battling or suffers from any disability or illness, or that a person overcame her disability.
Instead: living with dementia, has cancer, being treated for ADHD, etc.
#ACES2021Online
(4/5)
This article is SO messed up. Disabled ppl should NOT be made to feel guilty for needing medical equipment that keeps us ALIVE!! Ppl with asthma shouldn't be told to "make every puff count" (wtf). Stop pitting environmental mvmt against
#disability
rights!
Hi
@Sia
, the fact that you tweeted this to an
#ActuallyAutistic
actor shows you have some deep-seated beliefs about disabled people & making personal attacks doesnโt help your argument about having good intentions (which btw isnโt enough when the intentions lead to harm)
#FilmDis
She insisted that I'd get my trach tube taken out one day, too. I kindly told her that I'd had my tracheostomy tube for 30 years, my entire life, that it's all I've ever known, and that it's a part of me. But all the woman kept saying was, "If my mom can do it, you can too!"
#AbleismTellsMe
that I need to work and "stay strong" through tough days because if I don't, I'll be confirming the stereotype that disabled people are weak and incapable.
But things quickly went downhill. The woman said that her mom was so determined to have her trach tube taken out, and that she finally did after learning to breathe without it. She had stars in her eyes while looking at me, and I immediately could tell where this was headed.
For
@themandalorian
, they hired an actual Deaf actor to play one of the Tusken raiders and help create Tusken Sign Language. ๐
They did this bc a hearing person who knew ASL suggested it.
Itโs our responsibility, when weโre in the room, to look around and see whoโs missing.
Dear PR folks sending me story ideas about
#disability
: If your pitch includes the phrases "overcome," "against all odds," "great success despite," and/or "didn't let anything hold them back," I'm not covering it.
#journalism
#media
#ableism
Too often, people with disabilities donโt get to share their own experiences because the default approach is to ask our parents, caregivers, teachers, friends, mentors, etc. instead of us. Narratives about
#disability
must always center the voices of disabled people.
#CriptheVote
This ๐๐ผ The needs of disabled people are not "special." They are basic human rights and should always be treated like so. Accommodations aren't about giving out favors, they're about leveling the playing field.
When possible, avoid the terms special needs and special education. While they remain in wide use in education and law, many view them as euphemistic and offensive. Instead, aim to be specific about the needs or services in question.
Dear PR folks who send me story pitches about a person who somehow "overcame" their
#disability
to launch a successful career as a health coach/artist/beautician/teacher/etc (because *gasp*
#disabled
ppl are capable of having professions like "everyone else"?!): You bore me.
Dear ppl on the street, in the subway, at the store: No, Iโm not contagious. No, I didnโt get into an accident. No, I donโt need your sympathy โ nor your disgust. This is just how I breathe, this is how I live. Get over your
#ableism
so we can both get on with our lives, please.
As I sat in the subway waiting for my train tonight, this woman turned around to glare at me every time I took a breath. I tried to ignore her until she turned & said, โYouโre *breathing.* Thatโs why I keep looking.โ She actually tried to use her
#ableism
as a defense! WTF.
I am so tired of shouting, "HEY,
#DISABLED
PEOPLE EXIST, TOO!" But I will keep doing it and doing it until the day finally comes when
#disability
inclusion across all industries and conversations is the standard.
#NothingAboutUsWithoutUs
it me! cat's out of the bag, I've got a piece coming out in
@nytimes
later this month ๐ค in the meantime, calling all disabled people to fill out the form below to help inform NYT's

why my job as a journalist covering disability is so important โ and also why it matters that Iโm a *disabled* journalist doing this work. We need more of us in the media industry.

Umm
@Sia

#autistic

I am so grateful to have the funniest, nerdiest, smartest, most caring, most supportive, all-around best life partner I could ever ask for. Also look at how cute he is!!
In light of that awful
@nytimes
"ethics" column, I'm reupping this because when nondisabled people say horrible untrue things about the value of our lives, it's up to us โ actually
#disabled
people โ to remind each other how much we matter. Remember: You're worth it.
Disabled people are NOT A BURDEN.
Disabled people are NOT A BURDEN.
Disabled people are NOT A BURDEN.

Itโs been nine years since my partner and I started dating and exactly 10 years since we first met. Weโve been through a lot together, but itโs definitely been worth it. Hereโs a photo of us from our early days ๐ฅฐ

Elizabeth Warren has arguably done more for

Are you a journalist interested in covering disability? Iโm developing a curriculum to help you do exactly that! For me to build the most effective resources possible, it would be a HUGE help if you could fill out this form (it takes ~8 min). Please RT:

Seven years ago, there were almost no news outlets with positions focused on covering disability. Now, newsrooms have finally recognized that they can't afford to ignore disability any longer. Let's continue to hire disability reporters โ and promote them๐๐ผ
I just declined an invitation to speak at a health care symposium for a well-established university because 1) they arenโt paying speakers anything, and 2) the vast majority of speakers on the program are white or white-passing. (thread)
Like
@slooterman
, I'm proud to be a disabled journalist. I'm also privileged to work
@huffpost

Today is my 30th birthday.
When I was little, a lot of people had low expectations of what I'd accomplish in life. I was the "sick" kid, always in & out of the hospital. I "couldn't" do this, I "couldn't" handle that. Instead of being defeated, I wanted to prove everyone wrong.

The
#MykaStauffer

I started quarantining a week before everyone else last March. My family was in China when it first broke out and I knew how serious it was. I will never forget the jokes people in the U.S. were making about the coronavirus while I was terrified for the lives of people I loved.
I want to know why
@APStylebook
thinks it's better to default to person-first language, b/c it implies to me that we should still tiptoe around disability. What's wrong with identity-first or using them interchangeably? Plus, using only person-first makes the writing clunkier.
One of the biggest issues is this "grind culture" that pushes doctors, esp residents & trainees, to be invincible. As
@PetePoullos
says: "Itโs almost like a contest as to who can be the fastest, most efficient, smartest superhero doctor who can jump into the room & save the day."
"People with disabilities need to feel proud of who we are. We need not to be ashamed."
