Just stopping by your timeline in case you didn’t know that the Chief Science Advisors for Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States - are all women 🔥
“A college class had two teaching assistants: one male and one female. At the end of the semester, the students scored the male TA higher on course evaluations, while the female TA got five times as many negative reviews.
There’s just one problem: They were the same person”
Students in an online class were told they had one of these 2 TAs. But behind the scenes,
@EmilyKhazan
, left, fulfilled TA duties for all 136 students. When student evaluations came in, though, guess which TA scored higher?

It may only take two seconds but double checking that you have spelled someone’s name correctly before reaching out for the first time can leave a lasting impression.
Signed,
Someone whose name is incorrectly spelled probs 80% of the time.
Only 0.5% of science PhDs become a full professor, according to this
@nature
article. Imagine the difference if graduate programs devoted energy & time training the other 99.5% of its graduates for non-tenure/beyond the bench positions.
Oh science world. When are we going to stop referring to science policy (or any other science job outside of the bench) as an "alternative" career. No - its a legit, necessary and invaluable career choice.
“It’s no longer a theoretical discussion; Americans have lost their lives because they believed the politics, and to be able to articulate that is really threading a needle there.”
@JHUPress
For those reasons we should anticipate and expect the attacks against American science and scientists to accelerate as we head towards the 2024 presidential election, and this will be tragic
Today is
#InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience
and a great day to reflect on all the women who paved the way for us, the women (and men) who have lifted us up and supported us, and those that continue to inspire us so that we can pave the way for ours girls.
One of the best things about getting further along in your career is seeing your friends become the powerhouses you always knew they were destined to become 😍
“A typical neuron makes about ten thousand connections to neighboring neurons. Given the billions of neurons, this means there are as many connections in a single cubic centimeter of brain tissue as there are stars in the Milky Way galaxy.” -
@davideagleman
Thrilled to share my first proper Milky Way shot in years. This was captured off a small island far from city lights, allowing me to see the incredible detail of our galactic core. If more people could see the night sky like this, I believe the world would be a better place.
As immigrants, taking my parents on a tour of the White House exactly a year ago, is my most cherished memory, and I am reminded once again that while our own success is often built on drive and opportunity- it is mostly built on the deep and unwavering sacrifices of others.
I debated posting this around Halloween because everyone’s kids were so amazingly cute and adorable and then my sweet 9yo daughter showed up like this and scared the whole neighborhood away 😂💀
If I were to start a podcast I would focus on women scientists who are at the early stage of their careers but have the intense desire to see change happen in this world - and are doing it. No celebrities, no well known names. Only those that haven’t had a platform yet. Would
@bessbell
Dropping my 6yo off on the first day of Kindergarten- walking towards the school preparing myself for the emotional goodbye of love, hugs, kisses and tears and she stops me and says - you can wait right here and marches into school without even looking back 😭. Never recovered 😂
Tonight my 9yo made a self-care menu and I have to share because we could all use this advise. Some of my favorites: Love yourself; drink some tea; and unleash your creativity ❤️
Today is my immigration-versary, where many years ago my parents and I arrived in the US with nothing but a suitcase. If there is one thing they have instilled in me - it is not to be afraid to say yes to big things-you never know where they can lead you 🇺🇸
I really enjoyed this podcast with
@hubermanlab
and
@davidgoggins
for many reasons, but the discussion on the anterior midcingulate cortex is what really caught my attention.
@BlogOfTheirOwn
Ha! Ok I guess my brain was thinking the resulting structure had to be a full square (without a triangle chunk out of it). On an unrelated note making things harder for myself is a thing 😂😭
“If you are black, brown or a woman - you’ve heard this story before. You have to be 2x as sharp, 4x more prepared, 5x as perfect - just to compete with mediocre.” Truer words have never been spoken.
