@LouisStaples They do loads for LGBT communities internally within their business and through external support including the funds this raises... easy to criticise brands for ‘rainbow washing’ but by god I’d have fucking killed for my mum to have to see an LGBT sandwich when I was growing up.

@BillGates I appreciate the sentiment... and certainly mosquitos have a greater total risk.... but if you normalise the data based on ‘number of each animal encountered at 1m distance’ then I think you’ll find that choosing to encounter a shark is probably a bad idea ;)

10 years ago I took over Cadbury's Social Media and with Wispa, Creme Egg & others had more Facebook fans than most other brands in the UK combined. And precisely because of that I came quickly to realise that fan numbers were meaningless, and social a paid media channel.

I am amazed by the number of people who get annoyed at me for saying organic social is pointless and then quote Nike & Apple as their main counter examples. These are 2 brands that probably COULD buck the trend but are actually famous for being 100% paid on FB/Twitter. So... 🤷‍♂️

@LuciaAPhilip @jenalyson Oreo post was widely talked about in marketing circles, reasonably impactful & a great coup for the company... but our standard paid advertising on Fb/Insta etc that week delivered far greater reach, far greater business result, was cheaper than a ‘war room’ and was guaranteed.

ROI is a terribly misunderstood thing in media/advertising. Chasing high ROIs can mean running your business into the ground/minimising growth, and in fact a high ROI is often a sign you are underinvesting in a channel. ROIs aren't static, they shift as your budgets do

There’s a world of ‘made for advertising’ websites out there that are soaking up billions of pounds of advertising spend just to show ads in terrible contexts surrounded by the worst click bait… and advertisers are soaking it up because on paper it’s cheap high-viewability 🤬🥶

When consultancies tell you ‘Gen Z accounts for 40% of consumer spending’ they really mean they read an article, which had read another article, which did some totally made up maths on how much they MIGHT ‘influence’ the spend of the older people who actually have the money.

went down a rabbit hole trying to find the source of McKinsey’s “Gen Z accounts for 40% of consumer spending claim.” they cite an Inc article which cites another report from Barkley (3rd pic) which uses data from a survey released in 2013 (when 10% of gen Z wasnt even born..)

It's taken me 11 years to get to 10,000 followers, though a notable acceleration in the last year or two. I treasure and dearly love each and every one of you, though at a £3-4 CPM it's fair to say I could also speak to 10,000 people for about £30 if I was a business in a rush.

Once again I have proven to myself that my ‘jam’ really is defending things that don’t need my defence... Twitter, Unilever, Facebook, Tom, paid social... anything that attracts a pile-on I feel an overwhelming urge to be a voice of reason for. It’s not a rewarding side hustle.

This is a piece of television from 2021, not 1981, the day after #IWD2021 - Piers opens the show by making a female colleague stand up and show off/defend her ‘mini skirt’ dress. He walks off a few minutes later when a colleague says something vaguely critical of him.
