Received this at Alamo Drafthouse for “laughing at inappropriate times” during Elvis. I said “Baz is doing maximalism which intentionally evokes emotion and laughter is one of those emotions.”
I stand with ScarJo in her case against OpenAI, but when I worked in commercial VO, companies often requested "soundalikes." Meaning that if they couldn't afford Ty Burrell, they would put out a call to thousands of actors searching for someone who sounded exactly like him.
I can't get into the specifics, but a company I was doing copywriting contract work for hired me for an additional project today because they tried using AI, and it did not work out for them. Human-generated content led to sales. Yes, I took a job away from AI!
They said that anything another guest considers a disruption, including laughing, is grounds for a card. Lol. Hope it’s not cumulative because we keep asking for gift cards from them for Christmas.
I was a costume assistant during this time. Before the strike, Conan and the writers came to all the interns and assistants and explained what scabbing was and how he wasn't going to ask anybody to do it.
This is true. Here's Conan spinning his wedding ring during the 2007 writers' strike just to fill airtime. It was like this for months.
NBC was lucky that Conan is the GOAT, but it's impossible to explain to Gen Z how bad the content will get if there's another one.
I feel very gaslit by all the headlines about how “great” America is doing numbers wise. Unemployment, inflation, retail. When every conversation I have in person is how expensive everything is and how anybody is barely affording anything
I listened to these takes on the daily and - without the use of FX or AI-generated voiceover, there simply are actors who are born with nearly identical voices and the ability to mimic another's.
This also was in the case for brand exclusivity. Say Ty Burrell had a contract with Ford and couldn't do a commercial for GM, GM would just hire a Ty Burrell soundalike.
This is what emotional abuse looks like. I had one of these once after an X laid hands on me. The stalking, the refusing to admit it’s over, the publicly sharing private conversations. The cycle is called idolization-devaluation-rejection. Today he’ll devalue her.
Re: AI Writing...AI doesn't do what executives ask for, which in a meeting earlier this year with me was:
- Something relatable
- But a story that's never been told before
- In a never before seen format
- But also maybe in Save the Cat
- Written explicitly for specific actors
Bernie Sanders to Howard Schultz: "Have you ever threatened, coerced, or intimidated a worker for supporting a union?"
Schultz won't answer no. "I've had conversations that could’ve been interpreted in a different way than I intended..."
The wildest part about being a writer is you have to constantly battle "It's not personal, it's business" with "This script should be personal. It should be about YOU and YOUR TRAUMA."
There's gotta be a word for when a man in the industry meets my husband and I, learns we're both writers, then proceeds to only look at Brenden in the eye and only address Brenden and think he's the only one with anything going on in their career. Is it sexism?
One time I was having a rough day in NYC, and I walked by the Regal Union Square and asked, "I don't like any of these movies, can I just buy some popcorn?" They unlocked the velvet rope for me and said "right this way, miss" like I was buying a Birkin

Doja Cat’s TikTok saga this week of “If you see me posting an ad for Taco Bell, I hate it, it’s contractual,” then actually posting a horrible jingle with so much contempt is some of the greatest anti-capitalism performance art ever
This. One of the most bizarre things was being accepted into a writing mentorship program for female writers but being told in the fine print not to ask the mentors to read our scripts…
Every out-of-work writer I know is doing $$$ script consultations. At some point, it will be like in Schitt's Creek when all the townspeople are mid-tier salespeople of an MLM so there's no one left lower on the pyramid to sell to.
No, I don't have a paid job writing TV or film currently. Yes, it has been difficult this year. But here's what I'm working on:
- my first book
- a video game pitch to a studio
- a monthly high-concept live show beginning in July
- feature film financing
- polishing a multi-cam
The people who give you free advice, who read your script for free, who don't charge to get coffee with you as a "1:1 consult" generally have way better advice, more connections, and a more creative soul. Seek out those people.
Twins 2 timeline gubernatorial ripple effect also means Gavin Newsom still married to Kimberly Guilfoyle and Sandra Lee marries Andrew Cuomo leading to No NYC soda ban
All I'm sayin is last month I pitched a show to the refurbished UCB called "The Nepo Baby Talent Show," in which performers try to do talents that their real-life parents have to a panel of judges (people in character) with audience votes and participation. It was rejected

@WGAWest
You are a beautiful person, Drew. In an industry of so many crummy, fake, greedy people, you are the living example that you can be successful and choose to give back. Thank you for the solidarity and the pancakes.
Feel so lucky that
@HugoForCD13
is the Hollywood councilman during the strike. So awesome that WGA is getting support from the most pro-labor city council in years.
What won’t be in tomorrow’s coverage is that the members were ready to keep going for 145 more days. We were all ready thanks to the captains, lot coordinators and staffers.
The

finale was watching TV history in real time. Such a full-circle meta nesting doll sendup of Larry’s career and a larger commentary our current gerontocracy. Does unexpected wealth and success make you any more grateful or wise? The answer is no.
Inventions that should have come before AI:
- laundry folding machine
- automatic baking flour measurer
- way to exercise while sleeping
- upload dead dog consciousness into robot dog
- back up camera but for my head

She could really dial this thing back by taking a Spirit Airlines flight from LAX to Vegas or something. Sit in seat 27D. It's only 40 minutes.

and I's trailer for our short, DOLLAR GENERALS premiering this year at some great festivals. I'm so proud of it! DM me if you'd like more info.
It's a real which side are you on moment right now and I've been so impressed at the friends who are not directly in WGA but are close enough it to understand. Cheers to the comedians, indie film directors, and advertising friends who have come out to support.
My husband and I are hungover and silently eating pizza just sharing different The Spit videos from different angles to each other over text. We haven’t spoken out loud in 30 min
One of the most insane pieces of "advice" I was given in 2021 was by a consultant who watched

Bradley Cooper says "there's no chairs" on set when he directs: "I’ve always hated chairs on sets; your energy dips the minute you sit down in a chair. There's no video village."
He's also adopted Christian Bale's acting method: "I had heard stories about Daniel Day-Lewis. I

Gabby Petito's case has me reflecting on my own past abusive relationship. So many people told me to leave, I couldn't until I found inner strength. When I did, I was stalked and mercilessly harassed by him for almost a year. Most of us just want to be loved/give love.
Tried surfing today for the first time! Never walked barefoot across the PCH and never been on top of a wave before today. So fun. Always try new things. Ya gotta.
What is the point of automation anyway? If you automate away your whole life, how exactly do you spend your time? Reminds me of nannying for a rich lady who had another nanny, a chef, trainer, maid, and did not work. She struggled to fill her days. It was a source of depression.
I'm so happy. For my friends, my peers, my mentors, people who have helped me build a career as an artist and a writer. We still have to ratify, but this is the light at the end of the tunnel to a very bleak year.
The 7th Guest VR is out today on Meta, PSVR and Steam. It's a triumph of technology, artistic collaboration between incredibly talented departments, and building on an amazing piece of IP to form something totally new. Writing it was one of the best experiences of my career.
In 2021,

and I wrote & directed a 13-min short, DOLLAR GENERALS. Our awesome festival run included playing on three continents and meeting people from all over the world. Please enjoy the release of the full film online!

My UCB sketch, "Dead Man's P*nis." It has since been removed from YouTube but at one point had 117M views. The short version is below.

I love when a TV show in 2021 is like, "[Person] is a major influencer. They have 50,000 followers!" That's like bragging that a "rich person" has a net worth of $10K
