This week, a producer actually said to my face, "You need more white representation in your project. You're going to lose the white audience." Should've heard the way I laughed.
I've never seen so much hate for EEAAO as this week. Reminds me of the hate for Turning Red because a certain *group* didn't see themselves reflected in it. It's sad that AAPI representation in film has to be EXCELLENT to be nominated while we celebrate white mediocrity every day
The glorification of the "starving artist" is so weird to me. The one year I was so poor in LA, I couldn't write anything at all, much less have the mental capacity to think about my stories, because I was only focused on making enough money to survive another month.
Three years ago, a high-level writer told me nobody wants my pilot because it featured Korean American leads: "I'm sorry but there aren't any bankable Korean actors." Every meeting I've had this year, execs are specifically looking for stories w/Asian American leads. So suck it.
CREW CALL! I'm producing a horror short with a Korean American wheelchair user lead & an all-disabled crew.
I've rarely felt comfortable disclosing my disability for employment purposes, so I wanted to produce a project where accessibility is a priority for everyone involved.
In 2016, I moved to LA completely alone, not knowing a single soul, to take a stab at this wild dream I had of becoming a screenwriter. Almost 5 years later, I can't believe I'm living my dream. Most importantly, I'm proud of the person I've become.
Something I'm learning more and more as a screenwriter is that while creativity and ideas are important, work ethic and execution are just as important, maybe even more.
I can't wait to become an upper level writer so I can pull up as many lower level writers as possible in my career. Gonna extend the ladder so far down, we're gonna be digging holes to hell.
Screenwriters! I'm giving away a free copy of Final Draft 11! Won it at UCLA Showcase but already use the software. Drop a comment or DM me if you don't have FD and would like to use it. I'll put any names in a raffle and pick someone EOD tomorrow ❤️
Do all white people in power have the same playbook?
1. "This never happened."
2. "The POC who spoke out are lying"
3. "I'm not this kind of person."
3. "Why would anyone lie about me?"
4. "This is all a big outrageous lie."
I've been getting countless replies and DMs like this since last week. A reminder that I was born here, I'm American, and these insecure white people are terrified they're becoming the minority because they're scared we'll treat them the same way they've historically treated us.
I tell every non-Asian guest coming over that we're a shoes-off house and that I'll provide slippers if they want. If you still insist on keeping your shoes on, you'll never be invited back 💁🏻♀️
I graduate from film school tomorrow! It was a great two years and I’m proud of the portfolio of scripts I’m leaving with. Special shout out to my parents who are Korean and support my passion for the arts 🇰🇷🎉
What I'm learning is how important it is for us writers to take care of our own. No one else in the industry understands the struggles we endure better than we do. We should do whatever we can to support, uplift, and celebrate each other.
Are there any writers who are actually good at pitching? Pitching seems like the complete opposite of what we do and who we are as writers. Every writer I've ever talked to says, "I'm terrible at pitching."
Still blows my mind that screenwriters aren't always invited to the sets of the films they wrote. Like, I get why (egos, disruptions, budget, etc), but also there wouldn't even be the movie without them??
As screenwriters, we can't control the business, other people's decisions, or contest placements. The only thing we can control 100% is developing our craft. Butts in seats, keep writing.
Hi new followers! I'm a horror screenwriter striving to find new ways to scare the modern audience. I explore the conflict between the tangible/spiritual worlds & how Asian Americans exist within them w/topics important to me like mental health, all under elements of suspense. 👋🏻
When I got my first ever paycheck for screenwriting, I bought myself something I've wanted for a long time: a digital piano. When I moved to LA, I had to leave my old piano behind, so this is the perfect tangible reminder of how far I've come in my journey so far.
Before everyone jumps off Twitter! I'm still early on in my screenwriting career, and I'm certainly not super established or well-known yet, but I've been extremely lucky that so many people were willing to answer my questions when I was coming up so I'd like to return the favor.
On this one-year anniversary of the Atlanta spa shootings, a moment to remember the eight victims:
1. Delaina Ashley Yaun
2. Paul Andre Michels
3. Xiaojie Tan
4. Daoyou Feng
5. Hyun Jung Grant
6. Suncha Kim
7. Soon Chung Park
8. Yong Ae Yue
When the country went into lockdown in mid-March, I never thought I’d be celebrating my December birthday in quarantine. But here we are. Please send me your love because today I need it the most 🥳
Korean American actresses, send me your reels/resumes! I'm making a list to pass onto directors and producers because they're searching. Now is our time! Bonus if you like horror.
Something I've really enjoyed these past few months is reading other writers' scripts for fun. No notes, no feedback, but simply enjoying the journey and appreciating the screenplay for what it is in its current form. And I get to tell them everything I loved about it.
Once, I overheard my friends talking about how beautiful, amazing, and revolutionary I was. My heart soared...then I realized they were talking about Regina King.
So I know we're all talking about The Big Sale today, but a bit of good news is that we're starting to package the newest horror feature I wrote, so who has recs for Korean woman directors, preferably those who do horror?
now that we're post-strike, a reminder to everyone that just because i'm asian doesn't mean you should only hire me for asian projects. we asians can write a variety of genres, subjects, and stories -- and write them well too -- i promise.
We're now building out the rest of the team for the film, so if you're a fan of horror and/or a disabled crewmember, we want to work with you! Use the form below & we'll be in touch.
Coming out of the woodwork for two minutes to throw my hands up and scream, "I DID IT!" After two years of dedication to writing and honing my voice, I've officially completed the UCLA MFA Screenwriting program with six scripts I'm extremely proud of 🎉
Something I hope we get less of on Screenwriting Twitter this year: being unnecessarily mean to others under the guise of "helping." Most of the time, people calling themselves "experts" or "gurus" are not. A quick Google or IMDb search will confirm that.
You know what I dislike very much? When people “check in” with me only to ask for something, then go radio silent after the favor is done. Being nice and helpful is important. So are boundaries.
For the past month, I’ve been working on a TV project where I open the pitch with my painful experiences growing up Asian in America. Right now, I can’t go back to the document without wanting to cry. This week has been especially hard.

Yeah, don't do this. WGA members had to cease all writing on May 2, many losing their only form of income. This isn't "fun" for us either, and what we're doing is FOR our "friends and colleagues in the film/tv world" believe it or not. Writers are not the ones to blame here.
Screenwriters Raffle! The ScreenCraft Screenwriting Fellowship opens Oct 1, and I have a FREE ENTRY to give away. Comment below to be entered into the raffle. Taking submissions until 9pm PST tonight. Winner announced tomorrow.
(If I “like” your comment, it means you’re in!)
Writers, I need your thoughts!
Someone I know as an acquaintance but never connected with personally asked me to read their script. I hadn’t offered or requested it. If I say yes, I’m taking a lot of time out of my day to give tepid feedback. If I say no, I’m an asshole. 😔
Here's my issue with white women: they love talking about how oppressed they are, but when push comes to shove, they'll always choose their whiteness over their womanhood.
Hey
@goldenglobes
, it's okay to admit you've made a mistake and make things right. It's called growth. As a matter of fact, we won't accept anything less.

After a rough few days on Screenwriting Twitter, I'm inspired and uplifted by our newly unified community. We're all working toward a better future, both personally and professionally. 😊
