@greenland_gmt @PCGamesN @Tamslator It's purely capitalistic intentions; to keep individuals from competing on the market and in addition make them dependent on their usually low-wage paying company, and taking all the credits for themselves. It's an exploitative system and keeps individual contributors small.

After a long day of work, I just read through the open letter Martin Luther wrote in 1530 to set the records straight with everybody who criticized his translation of the bible. I can't believe how relatable the burdens of our craft still are today, roughly 500 years later. lol

@_alexdayo Lili is suffering a lot, it's really the worst. When I needed medical care in Tokyo for various issues I had to explain to doctors what food sensitivities are, got misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia, got half-diagnosed with a crippling autoimmune disease, they looked for cancer 1/2

@christian_coler @RicardoJuchem It's usually agencies that do this to prevent more competitors on the market (client could go directly to the localizer/testers next time *gasp!*), which would be bad for their own business since they couldn't keep middlemen shares. These limitations come rarely from dev side.

@Charalanahzard Machine translations have been exactly this for years in the localization industry now, that's why there's such a drop in general quality in the industry. There's more and more money to be made from games, and yet, costs are cut in ALL the wrong places.

This is an interesting case of non-crediting because the DK Rap in the Mario Movie was credited only generically as 'from the game Donkey Kong 64' without naming any of the original authors and contributors. Adaptations or re-use should feature credits of the original team.

tfw you're translating 200 pages with the male reference to a creature that then later is casually revealed to be female but the English tl keeps mixing up the pronoun-noun-situation too so you ask yourself how you'll ever get out of this mess but it's also the weekend lol 🥲

@jake_j_jung ??? I speak Japanese with my friends who also know Japanese all the time, and English as well. We do it mostly for practice or fun or just because some things are easier conveyed this way. Why does this need to be justified with a location/job/literally anything? lol

@katrinaltrnsl8r @distortxdheart this is important: sometimes we *have* to go with legacy terms because the fandom has already been established for years and new terms would displease the fanbase. There's less flexibility there, and it's often really hard to figure out a good balance between "new" and "old".

@capsulebutt I share this core sentiment but having experienced it, it's just not that simple. Many expats I know have spent years working towards living there, and even if they're miserable they have built a whole life from scratch while having sacrificed support networks outside of Japan.

Wooow. 6 years ago, on this day, I arrived in Tokyo for the first time, shortly after getting my BA degree. I've saved up money for years and worked like crazy next to uni to be able to make it and I had to keep working during the trip as well. But I made it, and that matters. ❤️

Why can't they learn about the actual practices and regulations before they yell? Where does this extreme entitlement come from? I don't get it. I know game dev is struggling with this too. I really feel for everybody receiving death threats over not providing 'perfect fun'.

I am horrified and sickened hearing about the arson attack at Kyoto Animations. The company has brought so much joy into this world and as someone who wants to spread that joy day and night I am speechless. My heart goes out to the victims and their family. #KyoAni

I didn't think I'd ever say this, but today I'm extremely disappointed by the IGDA. Abuse has _no_ place in this organization. I was always in the belief that especially our leaders would act on the 0 tolerance policy that we're all (?!) trying to uphold in the SIGs and chapters.

@shinhoroko This is also very true. I'm sure there was an incredible amount of pressure involved in this case too, and it's really saddening that health doesn't feature as a top priority in these industries, not even to many fans who suddenly feel entitled to the art :(

As some of you might know, I was entrusted the Japanese localization for the game Roots of Pacha. For this, I hired @Leo__Iwasaki aka @SIDEQUEST_Tokyo , who failed to meet multiple contractual agreements and thus forced me to hand off the responsibility. 1/2
